2024-11-15 21:52:05 +0000 UTCYeah this one is absolutely among the episodes that really fit the “Dark” theme of Dark Side of the Ring. This is definitely meant to be informative over enjoyable.

2024-11-14 01:18:31 +0000 UTCIt wasn't because they were wrestlers in most cases. People just wear protection. It's 2024 and seems like most people carry something in sweden. It's a societal issue. The only time people involved with wrestling had to carry weapons, was waay back when the NWA controlled everything and someone new, outside of NWA, tried to form a new promotion. They were usually threatened by the mob or people hired by the promoter. People carrying protection doesn't mean it's connected to their workplace. Look back at some film clips of the big cities in the USA backbin those days. Go look at NYC or Philadelphia during the 70s and 80s. Not uncommon at all for ordinary people to carry whatever protection they could get.

2024-11-13 14:42:38 +0000 UTCWhat do you mean “wrestlers never had to carry knives and guns on them” it’s well documented that tons of wrestlers had guns or knives on their persons in the 70s, 80s and even the 90s.

2024-11-13 14:20:50 +0000 UTCMacho and Hogan too. Tell me the eyes of Macho Man weren’t those of a coke fiend.

2024-11-13 14:19:48 +0000 UTCIt's a promo. It's not him shouting out OJ for real. It was to get heat with all the racists.
Jennifer Lindgren
2024-11-13 13:58:48 +0000 UTCWrestlers never had to carry knives and guns on them, and nobody is defending what New Jack has done.
Jennifer Lindgren
2024-11-13 13:56:20 +0000 UTCHe was blacklisted by most.
Jennifer Lindgren
2024-11-13 13:54:39 +0000 UTCYep. I mean, look at any Warrior promo and tell me that man is not on something.
Zakk219
2024-11-13 13:04:33 +0000 UTCI think the only thing that would rival this is the Dark Side episode on Chris Benoit which Josh has already said he has no interest in watching.
Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett
2024-11-13 13:02:07 +0000 UTCGiving a shoutout to OJ is wild and still something I can’t believe actually happened.
Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett
2024-11-13 13:01:10 +0000 UTCWrestlers don’t need to carry knives or guns on them anymore which no one should defend that.
Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett
2024-11-13 13:00:08 +0000 UTCThe majority of the promos in 80s WWF were being done by guys who had just or fairly recently snorted lines of cocaine or injected themselves with steroids. Would have been easier to count who wasn’t on something in the 80s than who was.
Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett
2024-11-13 12:58:59 +0000 UTCI know this community is genuinely pretty positive, but I just do not understand how New Jack has this irreverent legacy when he was an absolute piece of shit. He’s pretty high up on the list of awful human beings that have been wrestlers and yet people talk and act like him trying to kill Vic Grimes or Gypsy Joe is just a light hearted rib between friends. He literally tried to murder not one, but two people during matches. How was this man not blackballed for life?
Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett
2024-11-13 12:57:47 +0000 UTCTo answer the question about whether people knew about drugs in the locker room, almost everyone was on drugs in the locker rooms in the 80s and 90s. ECW was especially notorious for the drug culture in that locker room. They were the alternative outsider promotion so that's the type of audience and talent they attracted.

2024-11-13 11:33:09 +0000 UTCThis comment bears a lot of weight. I wish people learned the bad parts of history so they wouldn't be repeated. And I mean really learn, since we've seen how things are starting to repeat itself all over the world now.

2024-11-13 10:32:52 +0000 UTCI'm happy you released this reaction. Wrestling is, unfortunately, filled with many horrible and many sad stories. I remember the mass transit incident. I read about it and saw the black and white photos. I was only a teenager. But since I've heard and read that story so many times, it wasn't clocking. However, when this documentary was released was the first time I saw the incident where he attacked and stabbed the guy. That left me shocked af. I'm happy that you guys are sensible about subjects, but this was the right decision in my opinion. The trigger warning in the bebeginning is very good. When it comes to my personal wrestling memories of New Jack, it's complicated. Because most matches I watched were the less violent ones. Nowadays, I usually create him as a heel in the videogames but I don't watch those hardcore matches. Pretty much only became a video game character and I think that's okay. When it comes to drugs, it was very known. The NHL was also full of coke in the 80s and early 90s.. but it's not like it ever stopped completely. The problem is that back then, the problem wrestling industry was so horrible backstage and the culture around the drugs were a perfect mix for total chaos. I think now wrestlers probable rather have some herb and play videogames though. Much better than coke and violence. 😅 Hope everything is good with you two and everyone else in this community. Hope you're having a great week whoever you are reading this. Be kind to others and be kind to yourself ❤️🌈

2024-11-13 10:28:18 +0000 UTCI used to DM New Jack and he would respond lmao. Wrestling is filled with some of the worst and most complicated people in the history of the earth, New Jack is just one of them. Most of the guys back then were having sex with underage girls and etc. I’ve been backstage at wrestling shows even today where wrestlers use coke and other drugs before wrestling. It is definitely an interesting industry

2024-11-13 05:49:35 +0000 UTCI saw this when it first came out. Definitely once was enough. So everyone else enjoy.

2024-11-13 04:27:47 +0000 UTCI don't get easily squeamish, but I had to cover the left corner of the screen a couple times.

2024-11-13 04:08:47 +0000 UTCThat OJ promo still getting new jack heat in 2024, everytime someone new sees it they are stunned
SwantonAtomBomb
2024-11-13 03:07:07 +0000 UTCI also appreciate them watching/posting this it's good for them and other new fans to see that not all wrestlers are good people. plus it shows that not everything is palatable for every fan some people will be offended or outright hate some wrestlers/storylines if they look into wrestling enough.
SwantonAtomBomb
2024-11-13 02:49:03 +0000 UTC100% everything has its dark side, it's just wrestling has a very dark side and I think the new jack stuff isn't even that far into the darker stuff.
SwantonAtomBomb
2024-11-13 02:45:24 +0000 UTCRegarding the drug use, everyone in ECW was hooked on some sort of hard drug, it was completely normal in that locker room. Those guys were banged up and basically getting scammed by Paul Heyman with the amount of checks that were bouncing. Pretty sure he owed RVD half a million by the end (never paid it back of course). Regarding New Jack as a wrestler, he's seriously one of the best promo guys ever.
FINALLY CHOI LIA HAS COME BACK TO ITZY
2024-11-13 02:33:13 +0000 UTCIn my eyes it quite simply just boils down to this. The legend of New Jack is one thing but the man found the perfect outlet to take out all his frustrations in life, whether it be his trauma from childhood or how he was treated by his community - wrestling seemed to suit him best for that. Whatever you think about his talent at getting heat on the mic or his extreme moments in the ring is simply irrelevant. He was an unhinged, psychopath who was also playing a psychopath. There are a lot of bad people in the world, and another one just so happened to taint the business we all love so much

2024-11-13 02:04:10 +0000 UTCThat Heyman tribute was actually on my list of promos to potentially nominate some day, but I knew Josh and Tally didn't have the context to get the most out of it.
Adam Nelson
2024-11-12 23:00:44 +0000 UTCI liked his character in Smoky Mountain, but after that it just got of hand. They needed to limit him and ECW didn’t

2024-11-12 22:00:33 +0000 UTCNew Jack had a way of getting heat with his promos that was just amazing man. Ive watched a lot of his promos and they are just awesome. Nothing he ever said was given to him or written down and told to him to say. If you gave that power to most wrestlers now and tell them “get some heat” they wouldn’t know where to start without some writer handing them a paper. He was able to pull from real life and use it. Yes it wasn’t “right” from 2024 eyes or make him/anyone in the group feel good but he was doing his job. Like Dlo Brown said it’s a weird place to be in where yes you want someone hurling racial slurs at you. The thing with the people showing up at the back door and cops leading em out that used to happen in the territory days a lot. The heat would get to the point where some guys going into a certain town they would stop at the police station and have cops drive them to and back from shows to they could be safe.

2024-11-12 21:15:12 +0000 UTCAnd you know the crazy thing about New Jack and Benoit, is that anytime New Jack was talking about Benoit in an interview, he always went off on Benoit for the tragedy.
Christopher Barnes
2024-11-12 21:13:05 +0000 UTCPaul Heyman gave a very good tribute to New Jack after he passed away https://youtu.be/GVZqv7JOFvc?si=zdTeiZD_dHMzl0vJ It was said in the start of the doc that he was a bounty hunter that was true. Here’s a interview from him talking about it https://youtu.be/Aj9q83Hnhs8?si=L6GrSIYDcoLlE-IU New Jack had just started to settle down with his wife and kids before he passed away. He had just started to develop that sense of normalcy. Cornette also talked about him in a really heartfelt way when he passed https://youtu.be/i4LMZ_twlcs?si=GX_Yb83gC_x4GKBP

2024-11-12 21:10:39 +0000 UTCI knew nothing about New Jack going into this one. Wow. Never heard of anything like it in the wrestling industry. The fact that promoters continued to book this guy is insane to me.
Kam
2024-11-12 21:08:53 +0000 UTCAlot of these instances were just New Jack getting a slap on the wrist. The guy stabbed a 17 year old kid who disrespected him, okay give him a slap on the wrist. The guy threw another person off a scaffold and broke his ankle. Well, it was revenge for what happened earlier and the guy didn't really get hurt too bad. Then there's the knife stabbing part that freaked everyone out and made everyone realize just how much of an asshole New Jack really was. It was then that the earlier stuff begin to seem more like a warning that everyone ignored until it was too late and they realized the person New Jack really was in the end.

2024-11-12 21:02:11 +0000 UTCThe limit was indeed tested in this video
Christopher Barnes
2024-11-12 20:22:19 +0000 UTCAbout 30 minutes into the video and I just wanna say, even though you said it made y'all comfortable, I'm glad y'all did react to it because it shows how dark this buisness can get, which I think is important to know. If that makes any sense
Matthew Harvey
2024-11-12 20:19:34 +0000 UTCTotally. I love watching real WW2 footage so your 100% on the money there. Makes you appreciate when 2 wrestlers are putting on a spectacular show and are both working together to make it happen, which is basically the opposite of what New Jack did on those incidents. (I say that because I think the documentary only highlights the worse moments. There's no doubt plenty of matches that didn't go down that route and we're probably decent to an extent)
BazMan01
2024-11-12 20:18:59 +0000 UTCWhen you learn world history, it's important not to skip the bad parts, right?
Dport
2024-11-12 20:15:36 +0000 UTCAppreciate you getting through this one especially with the mass transit blood part. I guess experiencing the worse part of wrestling only makes the good stuff even better
BazMan01
2024-11-12 20:14:56 +0000 UTCSo my thought process for New Jack I do not have a problem with hardcore wrestling it is just as much part of the art form of wrestling as anything else and I will stand on that Hell Foley was a fantastic hardcore wrestler and Terry Funk(who i will eventually submit more of if nobody else does) is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time and spent his middle aged year becoming a psychotic hardcore old man That is not what New Jack did tho He used his pain from his childhood and instead of using that in a format to bring about success for himself he chose to project that pain onto others and ruin their lives That's not wrestling and frankly with the context I personally have...fuck him
Paul Watson
2024-11-12 20:08:23 +0000 UTCAgreed man. I feel bad submitting a low ki match because I don't agree with him on some shit like his Qanon adjacent stuff etc but cornette after his between the ropes interview where he's laughing about SA is just like... fuck that guy
Diruroru
2024-11-12 20:07:00 +0000 UTCTo be fair they showed him the clip without context, he even asks while he's watching it whether it's a work. Still though, fuck Cornette
Charlie
2024-11-12 20:03:26 +0000 UTCSome of them stabs with "red" looked worked, but the footage was minimal I suppose so how you gonna know. And cornette laughing is disgusting at the fact there's a 10 year old in the crowd, maybe nervous laughter but his empathy is like..what the f. However, you don't work traumatizing a 17 year old and not feeling any responsibility for it when he dies for it.
Diruroru
2024-11-12 20:01:55 +0000 UTCI knew enough. I had heard little bits and pieces in the past similarly how I've heard bit and pieces of Benoit. I have no issue with the submission. I just want anyone else who is new to the story to get a fair notice before going in.
Dport
2024-11-12 19:51:46 +0000 UTCI'm surprised no one in the comments gave you guys some sort of warning about this one. But as you saw he is probably the most insane and possibly psychotic person in wrestling and that's saying something
Drew Or Die
2024-11-12 19:46:30 +0000 UTCWrestling is theatre and performance. Obviously, it demands a lot physically, and the toll it can take on someone is very real but at its core a professional wrestling match is a performance. New Jack was someone that was not performing - he was acting on violent impulses. He used the theatrical intention of wrestling to get away with actually just committing assault. He was anti-wrestling.
