Monday Night War - Ep 11 - Monday Night Jericho

Seeing this reminds me that Chris Jericho was maybe the most diehard WWE guy behind undertaker and Cena, having pretty much absolute loyalty to Vince McMahon and seeing him as almost like a father figure through their careers. Listening to the way that Chris Jericho wasn't really interested in AEW until they started offering him money, and then Chris asked Vince's permission before appearing over there, only to eventually turn against WWE and become a staple of the competition all over again. Chris is a truly fascinating figure in the history of wrestling, both then and now

I was 12 when Jericho miraculously won the WWF title. I was jumping up and down and called all of my friends that night. You should find the entire match and aftermath to react to. It was absolutely electric seeing it on TV. Also, it never counted towards his title wins. It was stricken from the record.

City and Local

I have some on my list to suggest eventually, but I have mostly been suggesting ROH/Shimmer so I haven't gotten to them yet. Doesn't help that a lot of his better in-ring stuff also involved Benoit.

Adam Nelson

Jericho will always have my respect. Whenever someone within the industry is in need of help he always donates money to help them out. Most recently with the injury to Chris Bey and Dutch Mantell with his health issues

I struggle to think of a wrestler who has degraded his legacy quite as much as Chris Jericho has in just a couple years. It is difficult to overstate just how much of an IWC darling he was in the 2000s. He was broadly seen as the hardcore WWE fans #1 wrestler in the late 2000s. And in the 2010s, he was praised as a legend who enhanced the show, rather than dragging it down and making it all about himself. People would argue that he was potentially the greatest of all time if you look past drawing power. It's honestly impressive how he managed to make so many people have an overall negative view on him now.

.

So how jericho found out he was going to become undisputed champion, if im not mistaken, back in the day, vince used to mingle with the boys backstage like in catering, and how he planned to tell jericho was in catering, vince would be in the vicnity, within earshot so jericho can hear him and he would nudge the undertaker, who he was next to and say sarcastically, "hey taker! you know how i know this business is going in the toilet? we're putting the title on jericho!" So that was vinces way of telling jericho that he was going over and become champion.

Jericho is just one of those guys that stayed around too long. He should've retired around 2020 or 2021 because his downfall started around 2022. He was at the top of aew in it's early years and should've just stepped aside.

I would compare the early Jericho WCW run to what LA Knight did a year ago. LA Knight first feud was Bray Wyatt and then he had no icreative plans for months. He barely got any TV time but the fans kept cheering for him louder every week that they couldn't deny his popularity and now is a champ

Drink it in, maaaaaaaan

Jericho has been able to stay popular for so long because he is the master of reinventing his character. Nobody has been able to successfully reinvent there character as many times as Jericho has. His feud with Shawn Michaels in 2008 is one of my favorite storylines WWE has ever done. Obviously there was the list and his storyline with Kevin Owens. Even his run as AEW's first world champion and leader of the inner circle was great. He's one of the great's because he always knows how to get people to buy into his new character

Drew Or Die

wow i didnt know they did a whole episode on my favourite wrestler HAHAHAA. One of the reasons why I like him is because he constantly looks for ways to reinvent his characters in order to stay relevant and unique, every few years or every return, he is never the same. He has gone through so many personas over the years; Lionheart: The one he started out as back in WCW Y2J: The legendary debut on Raw and everything else was history. The only person who can say beat Austin and Rock on the same night. Back to back. 2 of the biggest names in WWF. :) Best In The World: One of my FAVOURITE personas, he dresses up in a suit and tie, very quiet unlike his usual loud self, uses long and confusing words, and had a LEGENDARY rivalry with Shawn Michaels. He was a complete asshole, punching Michaels's wife, and the infamous segment where he threw HBK through glass Painmaker: A persona he had in NJPW, a complete contrast to what he has done in the past. A much darker version of himself, with facepaint and the spiky jacket. Looks super badass The List: Another one of my favourites. He was just so funny, had a lot of catchphrases like "drink it in maaaannn" and the list was just absolute gold. His feud with Kevin Owens and the Festival of Friendship segment is amazing too. Le Champion: One of his first gimmicks in AEW, also had a faction he formed at the time called The Inner Circle. Probably the only character I liked during his stint in AEW so far The Ocho: This was in AEW, Ocho means 8, and it was his 8th world title reign. Iirc he also formed another faction here called JAS(Jericho Appreciation Society) The Learning Tree: This is his current gimmick, and also another faction with Big Bill and someone else. (I cant rmb his name) Not a huge fan of this though. so yeah. I prolly missed some off the top of my head but I love how his constantly changing himself. Unfortunately its sad how he always gets overshadowed by the other (amazing) talent especially back in the day. Everyone talks about Austin and Rock and Taker nowadays (and definitely deservingly so) so Jericho often doesnt get mentioned as a favourite. Rollins is one of my fav current wrestlers, mainly because he reminds me of Y2J a little bit. From the similar intro to his promos, "Welcome to Monday Night Rollins/Raw Is Jericho", to the changes in his character: Shield, Architect, Messiah, Visionary.

Back in the Invasion-Ruthless Aggression era, Jericho was one of my favorites. It is really disappointing that he has pretty much turned into a modern version of one of the guys that were putting barriers in his way in WCW. WCW did a Spring Break show in Panama City, FL each year, so that's what was going on with the ring on a platform over a swimming pool. They had to do some careful editing around the section when Eddie, Malenko, and Saturn followed Jericho over because there was a fourth person in that group (also named Chris) that they don't exactly want to highlight any more.

Adam Nelson

how they did Jericho in wcw was kinda like how Daniel bryan was in the early 2010s. At first he was kind of a comedy character that had main event moments here and there but never got the opportunity to really be that top guy. Until the yes movement got so big they couldnt ignore it. They tried to force anyone but daniel but that ended up backfiring and hurting they guys that were getting that push like batista in his 2014 return and roman in 2015. In 2014 at his absolute hottest they didnt even have DB in the royal rumble which was insane

Jayshawn Robinson

You mentioned the hockey reference. Chris's father was a professional hockey player for over 10 years. I mentioned it on the comments with his father's name. As for fans changing the plans for matches, I am not sure how far out planned Daniel Bryant or Kofi 's title runs were planned out.

Karen

I submitted his wwf debut segment for one of the polls a while ago! Barely got beat out

Kam

I'm pretty sure the more people who chant "please retire" the less likely chance he's going to retire haha. He's just gone a little stale in AEW at the moment. He likes to change his character up alot but the issue seems to be he gets into fueds where he works towards a pay off match where the fued should end then afterwards he continues to fued for 3 more months to long so nobody cares about whose involved in the story anymore. Plus hes playing into all the real life criticisms at the moment and it's apart of his character so that's not helping either lol. I'm sure he will eventually turn it back around. He's good at reinventing himself

BazMan01

You know, I know Jericho ain't a popular figure nowadays, but i'm actually suprise there is hardly any jericho match suggestions. There are a few obviously but still

Matthew Harvey

You know what's going to happen Dporticus, now that you've uploaded this video.... yeah thats right... YOU JUST MADE THE LIST

Ethan Sofinowski

Yall speaking to stuff lining up perfectly with my match I submitted in Memphis at the time the piledriver was an illegal move. And on Smackdown this past week Kevin Owens used the piledriver an illegal move in WWE and they told us “This is banned” and made a super big deal out of it. It’s just cool that a rule in the territory I submitted was just used on modern TV.
