Zack Sabre Jr vs Kurt Angle - RevPro Wrestling

Ok, story time. Back in the mid-2010s, WWE was having a Rough Time booking the main roster; they'd just trained up and debuted a ton of new talent like The Shield but they were struggling to get a young and inexperienced Roman Reigns over as The New Big Guy. Meanwhile, they'd let a ton of other young guys like Cody Rhodes, John Morrison/Johnny Mundo/Johnny Impact go. At the same time, TNA/Impact was fading in popularity, and AEW was still a few years away from being formed. Meanwhile, the UK indie scene was on fire at the time, with promotions like RevPro and Progress joined by WCPW/Defiant and a few others. Tons of people you know from WWE and TNA today ran in those circles back then, from Drew McIntyre and Will Ospreay and Ricochet to Tegan Nox/Nixon Newell, Piper Niven/Viper, Tyler Bate, Pete Dunne, Zack Sabre Jr., etc. These British indies were able to bring on lots of ex-WWE and ex-TNA wrestlers as well, both as long-term hires and short-term guest bookings (Kurt Angle did a brief tour through a bunch of the UK indies around this time, which is how this match came about). The crowds were fire, the rosters were fire, and the wrestling was fire as a result. Not to let their competitors grow too long, WWE started signing a bunch of these wrestlers around 2017, at first to NXT and then to their new NXT UK branch, which really swallowed up a big chunk of the talent pool. While it's great that these folks got a lot of well-deserved exposure and money that comes with the bigger audience WWE could provide, it really hurt the UK indie scene to have so much talent disappear so quickly. As for how I found out about this match, I didn't watch this one as it happened (I was looking up a fun ZSJ match to show you) but I knew that both he and Angle were in the same scene at the same time from watching WCPW during this era, where they both made multiple appearances.

I haven't watched the match yet, just the entrances. I did not know this match happened and it's a literal dream match for technical wrestling fans. One of the best technical wrestlers of all time against one of the best technical wrestlers doing it right now. To answer the question about time frame, I believe this is post-WWF/TNA run and pre-his return to WWE in 2017. He did a lot of independent bookings around this time as a sort of retirement tour. I am excited to watch this match for the first time. I expect it to blow my mind given the wrestlers involved. edit: incredible match. Pretty much everything I expected it to be. I could have watched them wrestle for twice as long. To answer the question about how people find out about matches like this, Progress and RevPro were (and still are) two of the largest and most popular British indie promotions. The UK scene was huge at the time and it got hit hard when WWE came through and signed a majority of the top talent and made NXT UK. They signed people like Tyler Bate and Pete Dunne, who were massively popular, along with a lot of other talents that had really helped those promotions and others during that boom period. There was also #metoo and speaking out stuff that did a lot of damage to that scene in particular as well. Thankfully, over the last couple years, there's been a bit of a resurgence. Hopefully the UK scene can get back to what it was because if anything else, there's nothing like a UK wrestling crowd.

So there is a streaming website I love called Independent Wrestling TV. They are a streaming company that has a deal with hundreds of independent wrestling companies to stream their shows live on the website and/or watch them on demand afterwards So that is how I often find out about great independent matches featuring former WWE talent. (If you guys ever do sign up for that I highly recommend checking out Dreamwave Wrestling, that's my favorite local independent)

In regards to the question how to be aware of indy super matches like this: I guess this is the reason to book them, to get eyes on the product, getting buzz on social media etc. If you go on the regular to Rev Pro, you are aware anyway but matches like these are there to get the more casual fan to come, espacially if it is some super famous WWE wrestler ike Angle. And then maybe hope that they liked the rest of the show well enough to return when Angle is not around.
