In the Fullness of Time - Part Eleven

This is part of a short story I wrote using my solo RPG, Spooky Action at a Distance. This was generated using an earlier version of the game, so the results of the rolls might not line up to the version available now. However I still think this is a neat example of the kinds of stories that can be told with this game.

Session 10 - Epilogue

Notes from Envoy Burgess’ Personal Journal

Recovery of the suspended people took some time. It was a coordinated effort between several governments, the UN, and a few rich and savvy oligarchs to create a series of aircraft that were suspended by weather balloons to get them down. Each of them continued to be weightless even after we returned them to the ground, and each were in a coma but were otherwise unharmed. However it soon became clear that they would never fully recover. Their conditions deteriorated, their brains slowly shut down until they died. That’;s when their bodies finally stopped floating.

There is still speculation but I don’t doubt what it was. One of those awful American news channels made a comparison to cured meats, the way we hang strips of flesh from animals we eat to age and develop flavour. I can’t get that thought out of my head.

I still see Rachel Chankul from time to time. She still can’t talk about her work, but she’s clever. I’ve managed to decode a few of the little hints she drops when we meet for lunch. We’re building devices across the planet. Officially this is to try to track the alien’s movements as it travels, and maybe they do. But from what Rachel tells me, or doesn’t tell me, is that they are for self defense. A world-wide network, like scales on a snake. A desperate countermeasure to defend ourselves from a predator.

I hope I never see it again.
