In the Fullness of Time - Part Four

This is part of a short story I wrote using my solo RPG, Spooky Action at a Distance. This was generated using an earlier version of the game, so the results of the rolls might not line up to the version available now. However I still think this is a neat example of the kinds of stories that can be told with this game.

Session 3

Roll Result: 8 - The envoy discovers something new about something other than the alien

Official Envoy Record

Session Three - Third Proxy

Proxy Details

Name: David Hecht

Age: 58

General Session Notes:

Today’s proxy was an older man with a thick accent. Some attendants in the observation room reported having difficulty understanding their native language during the session. The envoy was able to parse what the proxy was saying, and so the session continued.

Partial audio transcript:

Envoy Burgess: “Where did you come from?”

Proxy: “I was born north of here.”

Envoy Burgess: “North of the Atlantic Ocean, here on Earth?”

Proxy: “No, much further North. Above your galaxy.”

Envoy Burgess: “You were born in space? You didn’t come from a planet?”

Proxy: “Correct.”

Envoy Burgess: “How did you come to be, were you created from something else like you?”

Proxy: “No, I just came to be.”

Envoy Burgess: “You were created out of nothing?”

Proxy: “No, I was just created. It is not an uncommon occurrence.”

Note: Dr. Rachel Chankul, head of physics, asked Envoy Burgess permission to ask a clarifying question. Permission was granted.

Dr. Rachel Chankul: “Are you saying that you are a Boltzmann brain?”

Proxy: “This body doesn’t know what you’re talking about.”

Dr. Rachel Chankul: “A conscious mind that comes about due to random fluctuations at the quantum level.”

Note: The proxy paused for approximately 30 seconds before answering.

Proxy: “This sounds like a correct approximation.”

Note: The microphone was turned off so that Envoy Burgess and Dr. Rachel Chankul could discuss this answer.

Envoy Burgess (to Dr. Rachel Chankul): “Is there a problem?”

Dr. Rachel Cankul: “Boltzmann brains are based on outdated calculations. As far as we can tell, the universe is not old enough to produce something like a Boltzmann brain. If the theory were sound, which it no longer is, it would take trillions of years. That can’t be what this thing is.”

Proxy: “Incorrect.”

Note: Envoy Burgess, Dr. Rachel Chankul, and the other participants spent approximately three minutes debating whether the microphone had been on during discussion of the Botlzmann brain hypothesis. This was the first instance where the alien appeared to perceive our communications without being able to hear us. After some more discussion the session continued without the use of the microphone.

Envoy Burgess: “Can you hear us right now?”

Proxy: “Yes.”

Envoy Burgess: “Why did you act like you couldn’t before?”

Proxy: “I did not. You were acting like I could not.”

The session was cut short to evaluate security concerns.

Questions: Where did the alien come from? The alien is something like a Boltzmann brain, a consciousness that came to be through random chance, somewhere to the galactic north of the Milky Way galaxy.
