Io Shirai vs Kairi Hojo for the World of Stardom Championship at Stardom's 5th Anniversary Show
Added 2024-10-13 22:00:11 +0000 UTCContext from RJ Nesher:
Io Shirai/Iyo Sky came into this match against Kairi Hojo/Kairi Sane having just won the World of Stardom Championship (top title in the company) from Meiko Satomura the previous month (December 2015) to win the title for a second time, the first to accomplish this. Her first reign went to 10 successful defenses, a record at the time (Japanese companies typically value the defense count over number of days as champion). This is her first defense of this reign. She also enters this match as one-half of the Goddesses of Stardom Champions with Mayu Iwatani. Io, Mayu and Kairi also competed as a trio known as 'Threedom'. Kairi Hojo enters this match looking to become the second two-time champion, having a 3-defense reign from March-July 2015 that started by beating Io for the vacant title following the 'Ghastly Match' (quick explanation: then-World Champion Yoshiko went off-script and legitimately attacked her opponent, Act Yasukawa, at the start of a match, causing severe facial injuries that, despite a 3-month return at the end of 2015, forced Act to retire for nearly 6 years. Yoshiko and her friend/Stardom co-founder Nanae Takahashi were fired and the title was put up in a tournament. The controversy nearly killed the company if not for 'Threedom' picking up the ball and running with it) Fun fact for the post-match angle (not a spoiler in regards to the match or the result): standing in the ring will be 4 familiar faces: Dakota Kai, Chelsea Green, Alba Fyre & Piper Niven

God damn I love Kairi's entrance mask. Having the pirate hat as part of the mask rules.

2024-10-14 13:57:58 +0000 UTCDuring the ring announcements, it isn’t confetti, it’s the crowd throwing streamers. It is common in some companies. Any time I see it I think of all Japan in the 90s where the crowd would throw the streamers that match the color associated with the wrestler being announced. I’m unsure if the colors used here are used in the same way.

2024-10-14 05:32:18 +0000 UTCIt's pretty difficult to understate how big of a star Iyo was in Stardom. She held the world title about twice as long and had about twice as many defenses as the #2 person in company history.

2024-10-13 22:30:10 +0000 UTCWWE Iyo is great, but there’s not many that can keep up with her so she doesn’t give 100% a lot of the time. If you want to see her unleashed, her stardom work is where it’s at. It’s the reason I’m super excited for the possible Iyo vs Giulia match down the line. If they’re allowed to cook, should be a hard hitting classic. Fuck yeah, wrestling is the coolest.
