Not a veteran, but I saw Cena’s gimmick as less military and more Hogan of the 21st century. The top All-American guy, with some elements from the Marine film kept for flair. Sgt. Slaughter on the other hand…jk.

2024-09-29 18:20:50 +0000 UTCI was part of the navy and it really didn't affect me that Cena was playing a marine gimmick. I just look at it as him playing a character and it's also one of the reasons I liked Cena back in the day because I could identify with his character a lot more. Same thing with Sgt Slaughter way back in the day.

Punk counters the shoulder tackle first by just dodging it, then he counters the spinout powerbomb with a hip toss, then kicking Cena in the face when he goes for the five knuckle shuffle. This kinda results in Cena having to pull out some new moves like the hurricanrana which is so great, he doesn't do it well but that just adds to the move imo instead of detracting from it. Punk also has to pull out new stuff like the piledriver after Cena kicks out of the GTS. You could write alot more about this match, it's two of the greats doing what they do best. ****1/2

He didn’t tell anyone he was going to do the piledriver. Cena agreed to it because he’s a g. I’m sure Vince had smoke coming out of his ears. U know they were pissed because they didn’t even show it on the replay.

I still think the Mania 29 main event should have been a triple threat between Punk, Cena, and The Rock, but it least it led to Punk putting on the best match of that card with the Undertaker purely out of spite.

Back then since streaming wasnt as popular it didnt do as good of numbers as they wanted. So they ended up just partnering with an app that already had popularity years later in 2021.
