Comments

Watched until the chair shots started. Not into this match cuz of that. Mick deserved so much better in a lot of parts of his career.

Nate Cruz

Did it with Edge as well.

Johnny Williams

Yeah, this is a match I can't watch. A match that is historically significant but one that I have only ever watched a couple times and don't plan to revisit any time soon. I'm gonna skip to the end to see what you guys have to say about it but this one's just hard for me.

Zakk219

Wwe stopped doing head shots sometime in 2010 every match you see that dates back from 2009 and back they did head shots

WWE Jay Gaming

According to Mick Foley on Stone Cold's podcast, Mick & The Rock agreed on 5 headshots and it ended up being 11

SwantonAtomBomb

The Rock’s theme changed A LOT during the Attitude Era. I shit you not, there are at least 7 different versions of this theme. Same bassline but various changes (faster tempo, different catchphrase soundbytes and drums)

Snazzyway

If Im not mistaken, It was revealed the next night on Raw that Foley never even said I quit. If you look back you can tell he never said anything. It was a recording Vince and the cooperation (The Rock's faction) played him saying it in an earlier promo over the speakers in the arena

Shaun Carpenter

When you said "at least he hit him on the back with the chair".... I was like oooooohhh boy. Also.... "I much prefer back shots"..... 😂😂😂😂

BazMan01

A lot of what happened in this match is covered in beyond the mat, one of the best wrestling docs. I would recommend watching it. Hopefully someone picks it as a tally tier someday

David

Yea Mick Foley was used to launch the other guy to the next level. You seen some of the matches here on Patreon. Did it with Rock, HHH and Randy Orton

Tk Banks

Some of these things are probably answered already: I wish they had gifs on patreon so I could put what my reaction was when I saw you posted this match. You had no idea what was in store with the chair later 12:22 The thing about The Rock is he always laid his chairs shots in, so taking multiple chair shots from him was brutal. Lol, that was a smooth transition at the end. "You know what's also brutal? This version of The Rock's song" There's a movie/documentary called Beyond the Mat that came out later in the year in 1999. It shows some behind the scenes stuff from this match.

Christopher Barnes

Mick and the Rock did eventually talk this out between them and the Rock did apologize according to Mick anyway.

Nicholas Kramer

The Rock was wearing that shirt around this time because he was recovering from what i can best describe as breast reduction surgery to hide the scars

Daniel Carpio

It was getting pretty tough to watch. I've seen Mick do some crazy stuff, but I was getting concerned that he agreed to so many. Now it makes sense that the Rock went too far. That's messed up if he really never apologized or acknowledged what he did

Tallywags

I thought it didn't sound live! Lol

Tallywags

I'm watching this right now and just got to the part where you are discussing the Mandible Claw/Mr. Socko and how it blocks their breathing. So that's not actually the point of the move. While I'm sure breathing is a bit harder due to having a sweaty sock in your mouth making you gag and so it's harder to breath, there is actually a pressure point inside the mouth under the tongue so that is what the moves 'actual' intention is to be is basically a nerve/pressure point hold.

Zach Faulkner

Ok now I wish I said something while watching it. I thought the I quit sounded like a recording. Something was off there for sure

Tallywags

There’s pretty much nobody left who likes this match in hindsight. With everything we now know about CTE, this match, or at least all those chairshots should’ve NEVER happened. Mick has pointed towards this match as one of the leading causes of his memory issues. Also the Rock hit more chairshots than was planned and never apologized or seriously checked on Mick afterwards according to his book. And I’ll always believe a saint like Foley over the Rock and all his bs that’s only gotten more and more public over the years. Also Foley’s wife and kids were in the crowd watching this happen and they had to leave because it was too hard for his kids to watch.

Gai Valentine

So Foley's wife and kids where front row and his wife had to leave and go backstage because Foley's Daughter think she was 5 at the time was scared and started to cry you can see it all on the Documentary Beyond the Mat and The Rock got carried away with the chair shots and apparently never said sorry to Foley for going to far

RW____96

Nope that was the planned finish. just with 4 or 5 chair shots instead of 11. They talked about using Mick seeing his wife and kids crying in the crowd to get him to say I quit but they axed it because there were USA network execs in the crowd that night and they thought it would be too much. So they went with this which ended up being arguably more brutal. The funny thing was Mick had concern that his kids wouldn't register fear because they thought their dad was playing because he always told them that he was and had them backstage earlier talking with the Rock about how he was just playing with their dad.

Nicholas Kramer

I think I’ve got a headache coming on.

Abs Ali

So he actually didn't quit. The Rock cheated It was a recording of a promo he made earlier in the night saying I quit. Mankind comes out the next night on Raw saying he never said I Quit. revealing it was a recording. It didn't quite come across very well here. Also the Rocks theme is not my favorite but its the precursor to all the others it keeps more or less the same beat just sped up. If you listen to Bret and Stone Colds earlier themes its the same thing. a simple version then a more iconic version comes later.

Nicholas Kramer

Agreed

Ryan Evans

Man this match is hard to watch cte that why I hate head shots wrestling without it and after all this happen foley brain that messed up he was driving home 1 day and forgot where he lived in my opinion not worth the risk and I dontbthink it makes the match better either but man rock went over line here

Ryan Evans

Man, fuck this match. The Rock went way over the agreed number of chair shots. You can even see Mick offering different parts of his body, like his back and sides, to be hit, but Dwayne goes out of his way to hit his head. To top it off, Mick’s wife and kids were in the front row. This is truly one of the grossest things to happen in WWE history and, I’d say, one of the biggest black marks on The Rock’s career. I have no clue how the two of them actually went on to become great friends irl.

Ryan Redd

I dont know how true this is, but this wasn't the planned finish, however, Mick Foley got legit knocked out from those chair shots, they had to use a recording. I think the original finish was supposed to involve Mick's family. Also Mick didn't know the Rock was gonna do THAT many chairshots

Matthew Harvey

Come to think about it neither have I. Though I've seen the clip of the chair shots many times

Drew Or Die

Hmm, I thought they made it more clear the night of the show that Mick's "I quit" was a recording from an earlier promo. And Rock said "I quit" repeatedly before that in telling Mick to quit.

Adam Nelson

Knowing what we know now about concussions and head injures in general this match is a tough watch

Drew Or Die

You know in my 17 years as a wrestling fan, I have never seen this match in full before and its undoubtedly iconic.
