Kenny Omega vs Tetsuya Naito - G1 Climax 2017 Finals

Context from RF:

Long write up, but the context is needed in my opinion since there’s no video package. This is the finals of a 19 day tournament to face Okada at Wrestle Kingdom 12 in the Tokyo Dome for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. Kenny Omega - Dethroned AJ Styles as leader of the Bullet Club and is leading the largest faction in the company through its arguable peak, with members including Cody Rhodes, Hangman Page, The Young Bucks, Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, and more. He won the 2016 G1 Climax tournament but lost to Kazuchika Okada in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 11. Tetsuya Naito (pronounced “Night-Oh”)- Naito was a typical, generic babyface to start his career, which the fans slowly began to reject. This culminated in 2013 when Naito won the G1 Climax tournament and the right to face Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight title at Wrestle Kingdom 8, but was so unpopular as a babyface that the fans voted for the Intercontinental Title match between Tanahashi and Nakamura to main event that event instead. Naito lost that co-main event match after missing his signature move, the Stardust Press (a corkscrew moonsault). Naito would drop the Stardust Press from his moveset as it was unreliable and cause him to fail time and time again. Devastated by the crowd turning on him, Naito went to Mexico and joined Los Ingobernables (The Ungovernables). He adopted this groups rebellious and anti-authority persona as his own and created a branch of the group in Japan called Los Ingobernables de Japón. He began to disrespect New Japan fans, management, and would even toss titles around and destroy belts after winning them. Little did he know, this new persona would catapult his stardom and make him the most popular wrestler in the company and leader of the second biggest faction in the company. He is New Japan’s Stone Cold Steve Austin in a way. Omega’s goal is to win the 2017 G1 and avenge his loss from Wrestle Kingdom 11 by defeating Okada in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 12. Naito’s goal in this match is to win the 2017 G1, get revenge on the fans for their fan vote snub, and avenge his loss from Wrestle Kingdom 8 by defeating Okada in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 12.

You will always see crazy reversals in an Omega match since no one wants to receive the One Winged Angel

Paolo

Can't wait till you guys witness Kenny Vs Ospreay

BazMan01

Yawn

BazMan01

It may look that way, but it happens in combat sport all the time.

yeahokgood

Hey josh is there a poll this week mate themed or normal vote any match u want?

Ryan Evans

Yh both there matches were great

Ryan Evans

Yes, the V-Trigger is supposed to be a signiture move before he hit his actual finisher which only two people kicked out of and one of those peopl3 is Kenny himself

Matthew Harvey

Ok first off, does that mean the v trigger is his signature? And second, I yawned once when reading that and twice since typing this reply. Thank you very much 😯 *make that 3 times* thanks Josh

Tallywags

fair but the ospreay matches are needed !

Bionic_Elbow

I don't think the Kenny/Okada matches will happen, given how long the second and third are.

Charlie

To be fair to this match in pertacular with the false finishes, this is the biggest NJPW match of the year. The G1 happens once a year, and winning it is considered one of the biggest achievements in the world of professional wrestling, probably second only to winning the main event of WrestleMania. This was the 27th G1, meaning there'd only been 26 winners of this achievement in history, and this match would name the 6th ever multiple time winner. That's a pretty big deal, so it's fair to have the two of them get that close as many times as they did.

Charlie

I'm fine with this kind of sequence spam when it's the #2 most important match of the year like this (their equivalent of the rumble final 2) and people legit don't know who is going to win. It bothers me when a B-PLE/PPV main event or even worse, a nothing tv match is formated like this. When it's "unearned" so to speak.

.

The reason why Naito was overwhelmingly cheered is because altough Omega was very popular, Naito was arguably the most popular. The best analogy I can draw is Punk vs Cody in the rumble 2024 final. It's not that people didliked Punk/Omega, but it just made sense for Naito to win given the storylines they had built up. Naito and Omega had multiple great matches. I personally prefer some others more, which had less finisher and signature move spam reversals and was more condensed.

.

The word yawn

.

hell yeah some kenny! we need that kenny vs okada (both) , kenny vs ospreay (both) , kenny vs bryan danielson reactions 👍

Bionic_Elbow

Like i said, That standing dazed sell just looks goofy to me 😆

Dport

Aew is HIGHLY influenced by this era of nj

Ethan Sofinowski

The main reason there’s always a big reversal when Kenny goes for the One Winged Angel is because if he hits it, it’s over, so it’s obviously a move he’s gonna go to a lot to try and get the win and it’s a move that his opponent has to avoid like the plague to have a chance of winning

Darth Weirdo

Natio didn't no sell. Acting extremely dazed actually is the definition of selling lol

This was the year I started watching NJPW, and this was my first G1. And this tournament played a large part of cementing Omega and Naito as two of my favourites. The G1 final is one of the most important matches of the year in NJPW. It happens at the end of a very long and gruelling tournament and determines the challenger for the world title at Wrestle Kingdom. You could compare it in importance to the Royal Rumble. Kenny and Naito were basically the two guys most built up to unseat Okada, who was in the middle of a legendary world title run. Which made this match even more compelling, because either one of them felt like a real possibility.

Wade Kruse

So there were no actual finisher kickouts here. The V-Trigger is more like a big strike like the superkicks from the Bucks or Usos. Destino is Naito’s finisher, but specifically the version of it he hits at the very end, with the full standing arm trap, is the REAL version of it. A lot of Japanese wrestlers have sort of weaker versions of their finishers that they might hit as part of a quick reversal or a counter or out of desperation. Then they’ll have the true finisher that if they hit it, it’s almost always going to end the match. Naito has this with the Destino, Okada has it with his Rainmaker, and even Jon Moxley has a weaker version of his finisher, the Paradigm Shift.

Wade Kruse

I agree with the 'finishers should be finishers' debate and I'm so glad that WWE has basically returning to that structure, with some exceptions when it comes to a big match. In the late 2010s Brock Lesnar matches would include so many F5s, and add 5 Spears if Roman was his opponent. But some of the wrestlers in NJPW would kind of give a kayfabe reason to why they kicked out of their finisher (the main 2 that come to mind are Okada and Naito.) You can see it in this match where Naito hits the Destino throughout the match but it would be as a counter or "out of position" until the end when he wraps Kenny's arm into position and then hits it.

Dylan Thomas Banks

The end was the LIJ ( Los Ingobernables de Japón) Roll Call naming all the members at the time which he still does today with new members and Darryl has a whole arch I think Tally would love he’s pretty much Hiromu Takahashi’s (the guy holding him) mascot but he’s super over both him and Darrly lol he was unfortunately taken out in a match but returned not too long ago better than ever before

D’Angelo Dinero7150

Last thing I promise the “no sell” spots you see in a lot of wrestling is huge in NJPW is called “fighting Spirit” you don’t show pain until you can stand it some do it more than others I have to get to the $25 tier so you can see Ishi vs Shibata from Wrestle Kingdom 10 it’s a must see! Shooting my shot here lol https://vimeo.com/391956800?share=copy

D’Angelo Dinero7150

Also Naito always takes his time to take off his clothes real slow before each match to get into the head of his opponents and make them wait pretty much saying tonight is at my pace sunshine lol

D’Angelo Dinero7150

Btw Japanese tables are notorious for being smaller and way more difficult to break than American tables you have to really use some force to break them. Also NJPW is all about sports based content they even call themselves “The King of Sports” everything is meant to feel like a real fight in “wrestling terms” that’s also why the Refs but especially red shoes are held in high regard that and Japan respect culture. Red Shoes is in every big match but no other ref wears his signature red attire also his son in now in NJPW too btw Shooter who was also “trained/mentored” by Jon Moxley now after all that please don’t yawn.

D’Angelo Dinero7150

A couple of points 1. Fun fact, I believe the clap that the crowd was doing before Kenny's dive was from the terminator movies 2. I get your point about false finishes but TBF, Kenny didn't hit finisher once in that match 3. I don't know if you guys know that Naitos finisher was called Destino but saying Totino's pizzas was hilarious 4. YAAAAAAAWWWWWNNNNN

Matthew Harvey

This is regarding porticus talking about the kicking out of finishers at the end.

Dagur Hall

Tbf Kenny didn't hit his finisher once in this match, also no one has kicked out of it except Kota Ibushi once and Kenny himself once. Although Kenny did kick out of like three destinos in this match.

Dagur Hall

Omega said in an interview that he missed the table . He just sold like he hit his head for dramatic effect

Bryan LaBarron

I love this match . Omega in NJPW is some of my favorite wrestling ever

Bryan LaBarron

Dporticus I hope you watch the Netflix Vince Mcmahon documentary !

Bryan LaBarron

This match was hotly debated at the time due to the “botches” throughout the match such as the table piledriver or Kenny slamming Naito’s head into the ring post off the top. The way each botch flowed into the next movie and helped the story of the match led manyto believe that these were actually the planned spots. The biggest examples of this are: - Naito purposefully moving the table to create space for the piledriver and Kenny overselling his head when it doesn’t actually hit the ground (this can be seen when slowed down). - Kenny/Naito flowing into the top rope hurricane spot and playing off of Naito being rocked by the ring post, rather than going straight back into their superplex. Neither have been questioned about this spot, to my knowledge, so it’s all fan speculation! Still an incredible match!

RF

Naito was an incredibly generic babyface when the fans voted against him being in the Wrestle Kingdom main event. After leaving to Mexico and coming back with his new heel character and faction the fans began to respect and love him, and he’s the current top guy in the company to this day. His rebellious attitude was a breath of fresh air
