The explanation given by Cam is not entirely correct. The final round in the tournament was Rey Mysterio vs The Miz which was pushed from the Raw after MITB to the week after, where it opened Raw. Rey won and then Cena challenged Rey for the title in the main event which he won. Then Punk returned. Also it was well known by this point that H didn’t like Punk and apparently neither did HBK.

There isn’t that butting of heads anymore they found ways to mend those fences. I’d assume a lot of that fence mending came after Vince was taken out of the company because if Mcmahon was still there to this day maybe Punk would be back maybe he wouldn’t. I’d like to put my money on he wouldn’t be back if Vince was there but you never know. They could’ve mended their relationship as well if all the awful stuff about Vince never came out. Now I don’t think anyone wants to touch that guy with a 40 foot pole.

And he said that Punk walking out in 2014 was responsible for for WWE enacting changes that made it a better company to work at.

CM Punk goes into this in so much detail on The Art of Wrestling podcast with his former friend Colt Cobana. There are two sides to every story but Punks side is basically all in that shoot interview

2024-09-17 18:44:24 +0000 UTCThe "reality era" was formally named after Bryan won at wrestlemania 30. But one can argue it began with Punks pipebomb. That's when they started doing reality based storylines and catering to the IWC (for good and for worse). You can literally hear the pitch of the crowd deepening as more adult fans came back to check out the show after the pipe bomb. They kinda gave up on that in 2016 when they announced the "New Era" and the rise of Big Dog Roman.

2024-09-17 18:21:46 +0000 UTCAlso, my opinion is that Triple H was willing to bury the hatchet with Punk a long time ago. It was pretty obvious that with Vince around Punk wasn’t coming back but I think Triple H could always see the business in it.
