You watched the foley doc the other day. This is what lead to his anti hardcore character in ecw that they had mentioned and yes dewy is his son

If you ever have any spare time, and I know you don’t, his original autobiography from 1999 is a must read. The success of his book spawned a zillion tell-all books since.

When I think back on his greatest moments, it's undeniable how amazing he always was. Dude could make you laugh, cry, scare you, rile you up, make you wince in pain, and will captivate you every time.

2024-09-11 04:40:50 +0000 UTCMick Foley is and always will be my favorite promo ever. He's so much more believable than any other wrestler I have ever seen. He perfectly walks the line so you can't really tell where Mick ends and where the character he was playing begins

2024-09-11 03:29:51 +0000 UTCMick Foley is the best promo in the business. And yes, Dewey Foley is his son and someone did bring that sign to an ECW event. Mick was very legitimately upset with this as well as other incidents with the crowd being more bloodthirsty led to him making these promos and eventually turning heel and becoming an anti-hardcore character. The WCW references would also be further incorporated into the character, with Mick talking fondly of WCW and "Uncle Eric" (Bischoff) in his promos. Mick used to be in WCW prior to ECW and was also a deathmatch star in Japan so the anti-hardcore stance was really effective in getting under the skin of the audience who viewed Cactus as a deathmatch guy who was known for taking a ton of punishment in his matches. He also references Raven in the promo, who he was aligned with at the time and is one of the most famous ECW characters of all time. I believe in storyline he was the one who helped convince Cactus to turn on the crowd as well but I don't remember exactly.

2024-09-11 03:27:22 +0000 UTCThis was basically the villain origin story of the Anti-Hardcore Cactus Jack character, which is one of my favorite wrestling characters. He went to an audience that wanted one specific thing out of him (violent, hardcore matches) and purposefully gave them the exact opposite (boring matches you could probably see in the 50s). And the best part is, he was absolutely right. And not in the same way people say Drew McIntyre is right, but completely correct in everything he said. The style the ECW fans demanded, while it was exciting, it wasn’t sustainable, and it shortened the lives and careers of everyone who did it. Mick could have been making a lot more money in WCW or WWF by wrestling in front of people who didn’t want to watch him take chair shots to the head every week. Also, yes, Dewey is the name of Mick’s son and he was three at the time.

2024-09-11 03:16:42 +0000 UTCBackstory to "Cane Dewey" In 1994, American teen Michael Fay was sentenced to punishment by caning in Singapore, which became an international incident (and the inspiration for a classic Simpsons episode, which replaced Singapore with Australia). Shortly thereafter, ECW had a "Singapore Cane Match" between the Sandman and Tommy Dreamer in which the loser would have to be caned by the winner. This later inspired a fan to make a sign that proposed Foley's young son, Dewey, should be caned. The fan actually reached out to Foley to ask if the sign was okay, and Mick approved it since it was an expression of hate towards Mick, a heel pleading with Dreamer to stop hardcore wrestling and take the money from WCW, and was seeking to punish Mick emotionally (in a kayfabe sense). But after Mick's wife saw the episode with the sign, she expressed revulsion, which ultimately inspired this promo.

2024-09-11 02:38:24 +0000 UTCFrom 1983 - 1996, Mick Foley (my personal favorite wrestler) wrestled for various companies all over the world as Cactus Jack. When he signed with WW[E], they insisted on having him portray a new character, Mankind. Then in the summer of 1997, in the midst of a feud with HHH, a home movie Foley made with friends back in high school came to light. In the film, a young Foley portrayed the kind of wrestler he dreamed of becoming one day, Dude Love. All these details came to light in an incredible sit-down interview with Jim Ross (I highly recommend watching that as well). The interview, movie, and Dude Love became so popular with fans and Vince McMahon himself, that WW[E] asked Foley to start playing Dude Love as a kind of split-personality from Mankind. Shortly thereafter, WW[E] acquiesced to Foley's wishes and allowed him to portray Cactus Jack as well, making Mankind, Jack, and Dude the "Three Faces of Foley."
