Will Ospreay vs Ricochet NJPW Best of Super Jr 2016

Comments

It is actually very rare for Japan crowds to chant this is awesome & holy shit, not because they don't think it is, it's just not something they normally do

Matthew Harvey

I love this match so goddamn much.

Robert Wallis

Same. Alot of flippy matches I don't like because they tend to look unrealistic like someone would never do that in a real fight, but this is an example of how to do it the right way.

Chad

One of the better flippity atches I've seen. 🥰

Jennifer Lindgren

Yes, this!! Lol I love it

Tallywags

Agreed! I want more of them!

Tallywags

It was crazy to me that people argued about this match back then, it's crazier to me that they're STILL arguing. I've been fighting competitively for 10 years. Been KOd, broken bones, concussed, dazed mid match, I've been hurt for real and NONE of ANY kind of wrestling looks real. I'm sure other people whove played sports have been legitimately hurt too. Undertaker was some sorta zombie person and that was fine but here's the line? Super weird man. These guys entertained tf outta me, and Ospreay might be the best doing it today. Give me this match over and over again.

Nate Cruz

Give me flippy shit all day long, man.

prototype27

In the same boat as you. I can deal with some silly over the top unrealistic sequences if the rest of the match is grounded but if the whole match is flippy stuff then it’s a no from me. Multiple doing it is fine because then there can be some selling.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

Didn’t even realize there was no commentary until you said something. That’s how locked in to the action I was. Never seen this one before, super entertaining.

Kam

I like the in ring talent with all the flips and stuff, just for me it’s the amount of times they did it because to me it felt like one giant spot fest, which for me was a bit much

Jakob Micheal

I agree, it's the same as movies. If you have a blockbuster action movie and a campy horror movie, it doesn't make one of them less of a movie, they were just made for a different experience.

Dylan Thomas Banks

after reading the comments I have concluded that everyone is wrong and I am right

Flair

I think this match is great and I really think a lot of the criticism thrown at this match is misguided, and this is coming from someone who is mixed on Ospreay. The idea that this match “broke” the illusion of wrestling not being real has never held up for me as an argument. I think most wrestling doesn’t look “real” and can fall apart in terms of realism with even the tiniest bit of scrutiny, which isn’t a bad thing, the most important thing in my opinion is for wrestling to feel real rather than it actually looking real. In the context of this match, one of many dozen matches in a tournament meant to highlight smaller wrestlers, many of whom are very athletic, it doesn’t feel out of place. Understanding the background behind and when and where a match is happening is key because something that may seem completely out of the realm of what wrestling can be can be seen as completely normal in a different time and/or place. For example someone like Randy Orton, a wrestler usually applauded for his realism in matches would look completely phony compared to wrestlers in a company like RINGS (if you ever do a reaction to a RINGS match or something from a similar promotion you’ll see what I mean lol.) To me there is a level of back-and-forth and flow to the match to where even most of the high spots don’t take me out of the match. Obviously that will vary from person to person, but as someone who isn’t big on a lot of “movez” wrestlers nowadays, I think this match just kinda rocks. This match sure does stir up conversation lol.

This is a cool match if you want to smoke some weed and watch some athletic guys flip around. You can have fun with it but you can’t really get lost in it/suspend your disbelief. Ricochet at points did a good job selling and staying down but other points they’re both popping up after big moves. The repetitive kick outs are more used now but man that one big move at the end that should’ve been it but no kickout at 2. They had to get more of their stuff in and couldn’t end it. Different strokes for different folks I guess

John Coffey

Personally? I think it's just different appeals of wrestling I love to be caught up in a moment where I think..."shit this is real" In ring storytelling has always been important to me Selling Working a limb Watching no selling and flips will never truly do it for me Doesn't mean you're wrong for liking it btw it just means you'll probably see alot more criticism for matches such as these where frankly alot of people(including myself) don't enjoy this style as much

Paul Watson

Will was just 22 and faced intense criticism after this match went viral. Some good criticism, but much of it in bad faith or from those who only saw a brief clip. Despite this, he took it in stride and has become a very well rounded wrestler. In my opinion one of the best right now. Even the match you saw of him previously in 2019 showed that he could be more serious when the stage requires it and put on a fantastic main event style match. Detractors argued that especially the early part of Ospreay vs Ricochet felt more like a collaborative circus performance than a contest, which I can definitely understand, especially if you didn't see the full match. Personally, this isn't the type of wrestling that I seek out. But it can be fun to have a match like this on a card to add some variety, it's not like this was a serious high-stake match. It's not like it was Roman and Cody wrestling like this in the wrestlemania 40 main event 😂. I'm a big proponent of re-introducing a cruiserweight division in WWE. There is an entire episode dedicated to the concept of a cruiserweight division in the Monday Night War documentary.

.

I'd never watched this match and I remember the debate at the time but I was just getting back into wrestling and this would be a few months before I started watching njpw. I think the backlash wouldn't have been as bad if WWE wasn't basically a monopoly on wrestling, this style of wrestling wasn't well exposed to the masses even if a match like this had been happening on the Indies for 20 years before hand. If this same match happened in AEW today it would get this same backlash from a much smaller group. The match was fun, entertaining, funny at times, and people are still talking about it all these years later that's the mark of a great match, I hope these too can have a match of this caliber or better in AEW seems to be what they're building after will has his match with PAC at All out

I mean, me too. I also think we’d watch plays for different reasons, which I just think is interesting. I hope I’m not coming off as a prick, I really think this is fascinating discussion.

Ryan Redd

Not seen this in full before. Had a great time watching. People view this as an insult to the business but if the business is about entertainment, there's nothing that says this can't be a style that's included. I'm not saying it should be the main style of wrestling, as I believe wrestling is a home for every flavour. As long as it's entertaining.

BazMan01

I think i watch for the same reason I'd watch a live play or musical.

Dport

Shocks me tbh lol

Dport

To me, the illusion of it being a real fight is what makes wrestling fascinating. I guess I just never considered people liking wrestling for a reason outside of that.

Ryan Redd

I love how eight years later this match is still stoking debate lol

Will Humphries

I guess I don't see why not. I'm not saying they are equally impressive or difficult. But If they both provide entertainment, regardless of how different, I don't see how one becomes more valid than the other. This is all entertainment after all.

Dport

there's definitely different styles but I don't think the invisible man or the blowup doll wrestlers are just as valid as ric flair vs harley race lol

Ethan Sofinowski

Yea I was just answering your question. I think I just don't watch wrestling for realism or to be convinced of anything. I just want to be entertained and mixing in a match like this definitely provides that variety of entertainment.

Dport

Again, I really don’t have a a problem with people who like these matches, different strokes for different folks. I just don’t like it when wrestlers break the illusion that they actually want to hurt each other, outside of comedy matches.

Ryan Redd

The “Cheerio, Motherfucker.” Reminds me of this old CM Punk match where he would do a crossbody and yell “Fuck off!” As he did so. I do get quite amused by stuff like that. Sometimes I like minimal talking in my matches, sometimes I find it very funny. I love all the verity

Basment of Owls

A lot of these comments surprise me. For me, what makes wrestling so fascinating is that there seems to be no true "real" version of it. It can be two giants slugging it out. It can be two cruiserweights flying off the ropes and doing flips. It can be a referee managing a match between two invisible people. "Realism" can be irrelevant. I see it as an expressive art form where no style is off limits. And that limitless variety is what makes it special. I love this match, and I love that the participants looked like they loved creating it.

Dport

"because it looks cool" is the first answer that comes to mind for me.

Dport

This, and pointlessly violent death matches are the two kinds of matches I just can’t get behind. There’s nothing wrong with people liking them, but it’s just not for me. The entire time I’m just asking, “why did they just flip in sync with each other” and “why are they doing cool superhero poses”.

Ryan Redd

Havn't watched this in a few years. This made alot of buzz online at the time, either people calling it awesome or older folks hating that one sequence early on that ended with the double superhero landing. Put alot of eyes on both men. Both got WWE offers but Will chose to stay in Japan. The AEW match has already been teased on Dynamite and I expect we'll get it within the next 8 months or so, if they can hold off on it for that long.

Jordan Amos

This match is... complicated for me I don't hate flips as Lucha Libre is a massive part of wrestling history and we wouldn't be the same as without it But I feel this specific match goes too far into spot fest territory It's why I don't particularly like Will unless he's wrestling a toned down style This falls less into wrestling and more talented gymnastics Still a great watch tho! Just thought y'all deserved some simple insight into why certain matches are liked or disliked.

Paul Watson

Wow, this match set the IWC on fire when it happened. Tons of passionate debate over what was ‘real wrestling’ and what was just ‘flippy shit’. Imo there’s a place for all different kinds of matches (the variety of styles is one of the best parts of wrestling) but yeah, you had to be there when this match happened lol, was crazy

Will Humphries

I like parts of this match and I don’t like parts of it. Going into it you know this is gonna be a lot of flippy moves/athletic stuff that’s gonna look cool as hell but you kinda also know they’re gonna take it over the line of being real. That spot in the beginning where they landed next to each other in that pose that was a “we’ve watched a lot of superhero movies and we can flip so we’re gonna do this cool looking spot” I like both of these guys a lot but when there’s nobody there to tone it down a bit they kind of take the ball and run down the field, past the end zone, hop the gate and run out into the parking lot with it. I’m all for them going balls to the wall let’s put on a show here but just make it believable because their athletic and smart enough to make it that.
