Undertaker vs Kurt angle - No Way Out 2006

Watch: https://streamable.com/c4l1sz

Comments

At this point, Undertaker had been wrestling in WWE for 16 years already! He kept reinventing himself. The deadman combined with UFC fighting (strikes and submissions) was the best combo. He finally started having great matches with everyone, and would continue to do so for another decade plus.

Big Ell

Yeah Nate! Earl always did this wave and counted fast. His three counts were usually slower.

Big Ell

It's two hours long but I really need you and Tally to watch the Angle documentary on peacock, it's really good and it goes into some of the legitimately incredible things that Kurt Angle has done and overcome in his life to reach the top of the mountain.

prototype27

I meant to say 2000. I edited it

Christopher Barnes

I remember when I watched this the morning after. I still like it as much now. Kurt Angle was amazing! When it comes to Undertaker and his outfits, they have changed depending on what era of Taker.

Jennifer Lindgren

Great match. Kurt Angle is a beast. One of the best wrestlers to ever lace a pair of boots.

Zakk219

This look of Takers is badass.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

this might be my favorite match ever!

Dre Mercy

Kurt Angle is another wrestler who much like Undertaker got elevated into a top-top guy following Austin and Rock leaving.

.

Kids who grew up with wrestling between 2004- early 2010s largely consider Undertaker to be one of the greatest of all time. I'm one of them. His in-ring work got even better during this time, and he got presented as an even bigger star within kayfabe. With the streak etc.

.

At Wrestlemania 31, Taker vs Bray was in the total daylight…completely took away from the match.

From 2000 to 2004 Undertaker had a biker gimmick that kind of left out the supernatural elements where he started wearing the MMA gloves. He brings back the classic undertaker at Wrestlemania 2004 and when he does he keeps some aspects of the biker taker like the MMA gloves.

Nicholas Kramer

He actually was wearing them when he first became the biker in 2000 as well. But you’re right the mma influence for moves started around 02

David

He definitely started wearing those gloves as biker taker. I don’t believe he wore them before that

David

a gold medal he won with a broken freaking neck legitimately

Nicholas Kramer

The ending protects Undertaker and Angle gets to retain. Undertaker rarely lost definitively / clean

Shaun Carpenter

Kurt Angle was a decorated champion. By this point in early 2006, he was in WWE for six years. Kurt Angle made his WWE in-ring debut at Survivor Series 1999 and prior to his in-ring debut, Angle's first WWE appearance was on the March 7, 1999, episode of "Sunday Night Heat," where he confronted Tiger Ali Singh. he also made an appearance in ECW in 1996. During his rookie year, he won King of The Ring, European Title, Intercontinental title, and the WWE Title. WWE/World Wrestling Entertainment/Federation Accomplishments * WWE Championship (4 times) * WCW Championship (1 time) This was in WWE in 2001 during the invasion with ECW/WCW. The World Heavyweight Championship (the one they’re wrestling for in this watch along) was known as the WCW title before because it came from WCW. It does have minor differences and the title lineage in WWE doesn’t include WCW. When it was introduced in WWE officially in 2002, it became its own thing like the next title below. * World Heavyweight Championship (1 time) 2006 * WWF Intercontinental Championship (1 time) 2000 * WWF European Championship (1 time) 2000 * WWF Hardcore Championship (1 time) 2001 * WCW United States Championship (1 time) During invasion storyline in WWE In 2001 * WWE Tag Team Championship (1 time, inaugural) 2002 (this is when WWE introduced a second set of tag team titles for Smackdown since Raw had the other titles. This was also during the first draft.) * King of the Ring (2000) * 10th Triple Crown Champion * Fifth Grand Slam Champion * WWE Tag Team Championship Tournament (2002) And all of this is only in the WWE. He had success after he left too. And you can’t forget. Kurt Angle won the Olympic gold medal with a broken freakin neck In 1996. His Olympic win is as old as me! Funny that you bring up how Undertaker is supposed to be a supernatural character and wears UFC gloves. Yes, that’s what his character was until he switched to the biker gimmick in 2000-2003. During that time, you would see more MMA influence in his matches and gear with the gloves. In 2004 when Undertaker went back to the deadman gimmick. On Bruce Prichard’s podcast “Something to Wrestle With” he talked about Undertaker not wanting to go back to the deadman gimmick or at least not wanting to go back to it yet. So basically when he went back to the gimmick, he kept some of the MMA influence that you didn’t see before. I don’t remember the episode, but they went into detail on there. Undertaker always through good looking punches. Undertaker said if UFC was more popular when he was younger, he probably would have went that route.

Christopher Barnes

Can't wait for Monday night wars tonight gonna be fun to see what u guys think to it

Ryan Evans

Classic one of takers best maybe his best outside the hbk matches is this tally 1st taker match

Ryan Evans

Damn he's injured it 5 times? And win his gold with a broken neck? Dude's a monster

Tallywags

I clearly need to catch up on my undertaker matches lol but good to know he was actually a good ref.

Tallywags

Yeah I think you're right. Although, I'm vaguely picturinng him having those gloves on under the trench coat on his motorcycle??? Maybe mandela effect lol. I don't think he wore anything during his ministry days. His return to the Deadman made him less of a devil worshipping character and had elements of biker in it.

Nate Cruz

I feel like Taker didn't start using the UFC gloves until some time after he returned to the Deadman gimmick (though they would have made sense for the American Badass character too).

Adam Nelson

Taker wore these gloves that looked like dishwashing gloves in the beginning lol. I think at this time, UFC wasn't nearly as big, so those gloves weren't synonymous w it as much as it is now. I remember Goldberg used to wear them in the late 90s, and I never correlated them w anything other than him. Both of them ended up being big MMA fans so they were probably inspired by it. Side note, I always liked Nick Patrick as ref. Always disliked Earl cuz he would like drop to the ground every time he would count 2 and it always gave away the kick out and looked goofy af to me lol.

Nate Cruz

Yeah Angle has had neck issues for his entire career, injuring it a total of 5 times, all pretty bad. During the Trials before the 1996 Olympics, one of his opponents dropped him on his head. That fractured two cervical vertebrae, herniated two discs, and pulled four muscles. Then he went on to win a gold medal in amateur wrestling. Yup, he “won a gold medal with a broken freakin neck”. Kurt is as legit as they come.

Gai Valentine

For a guy who started wrestling in the 80s, it’s incredible that Undetaker’s in-ring prime wasn’t until the mid/late 2000s

RF

Yes! When someone asks me to show them my favorite match, this is the first one I think of.

Brian Leonard

I loooooove this match sooooo much
