Shingo Takagi vs Will Ospreay - NJPW Best of the Super Jrs 2019 Finals

Two of the best super juniors finally go at it! To answer some questions: New Japan got big around 2014 and had their own streaming service. American audiences were wanting to watch too so they added an English language commentary option. The 619 is just so synonymous with Rey, but that's just what it will always be called, no matter who uses it. Same with the Tombstone, sharpshooter, etc. Time limits are commonplace in Japan. You can hear the timekeeper announce every 5 minutes how much time has elapsed. Most matches in Japan have a time limit, but since this was the finals, it was one fall to a finish. To answer Tally's question, everyone knows some English. The refs always count in English, even if no non Japanese wrestlers (known as gaijin or foreigners) are in the match.

2024-11-25 15:36:04 +0000 UTCThe 619 originally was created by the legendary Tiger Mask (a gimmick that multiple wrestlers used over time) and was called the Tiger Feint Kick. This name still gets used predominantly in other companies than the WWE. I think I heard it in AEW from commentator Excalibur but also in general in for example joshi wrestling companies like Stardom, Sendai Girls or TJPW.

2024-08-26 20:32:13 +0000 UTCNice! Since they expressed interest in seeing Ospreay face Dragon Lee and him calling out Hiromu in the post-match promo, I’m thinking I’ll turn this into a little trilogy. Next two will probably be vs Dragon Lee at Dominion and vs Hiromu at Wrestle Kingdom.

2024-08-26 18:28:01 +0000 UTCThe Discovery of wrestling is one of the best parts. The sheer variety of Wrestlers and styles of promotions and the art of wrestling itself. It’s so much fun.

2024-08-26 14:01:49 +0000 UTCI’m submitting Naito vs Omega at the 2017 G1 finals to get them more familiar with some of the current top talent, and potentially get them to look into watching Wrestle Kingdom. Then after that I was planning to recommend Nakamura vs Ibushi - WK9 and Ishii vs Shibata G1 2013.

2024-08-26 13:58:25 +0000 UTCI think I watched one speed match and it was because we were at the show they were taping it. Haven't watched any since. I wish they would bring them back to WWE

2024-08-26 13:56:02 +0000 UTCI’ll mainly submit NJPW matches too. To avoid submitting the same ones, next month I’ll go with Tana vs. Okada at WK10. After that, I think all 4 Okada vs. Omega matches. I’m not sure what to do next, maybe Naito’s storyline. If you need help submitting NJPW matches, I can help you to speed things up.

2024-08-26 12:20:35 +0000 UTCHopefully, next year you can do a watch-along of NJPW tournaments like Best of the Super Jr. or G1 Climax. Throughout the tournament, you’ll probably get almost 100 singles matches in a month. You might not be able to watch it live due to the time difference, but you can hop on NJPW World to watch anytime. It’s a really fun experience, watching the tournament progress and picking your favorite wrestler to win.

2024-08-26 04:10:22 +0000 UTCTally asked about spot calling in Japan, it used to be mostly done in English because of pro wrestling originating in America. It also prevents the crowd from knowing what's coming since it's not Japanese, however more recently Spanish has become prominent since Japanese wrestlers are often sent to Mexico to learn Lucha style wrestling.

2024-08-26 03:38:25 +0000 UTCGlad you guys liked this match as much as I did. To answer a few of your questions: Yes I did not mean to timestamp that YouTube video, you figured out what I meant to show you, haha. You actually could have adjusted the subtitle language in the settings and seen a proper translation, it automatically did it for me so I didn’t think to mention it. Luckily, it was easy enough for you to figure out what he meant, lol. My understanding is that English has a decent amount of pop culture penetration in Japan. If you listen to a lot of songs, or anime voice acting, or other forms of entertainment, you’ll see a lot of random English words and phrases sprinkled in. So it seems like enough people know enough to figure some stuff out through context clues. Anyway, I’ll probably focus mostly on NJPW submissions going forward, now I just need to figure out what’s next, lol. Very happy I managed to pick one that went over well, let’s see if I can do it again!

2024-08-26 03:03:30 +0000 UTCThe refs ring name is actually “Red Shoes Unno”
RF
2024-08-26 02:40:04 +0000 UTCThere are two types of people in this world... those who's favorite ref is Red Shoes, and those who haven't watched NJPW yet lol

2024-08-26 02:39:57 +0000 UTCWWE's version of the cruiserweight championship is that awful Speed Championship on Twitter. The title and division never got the time and respect it deserved under Vince since he never really liked smaller guys. Hoping Triple H goes back to the cruiserweight title at some point.
