Bryan Danielson vs Lance Storm, ROH Better Than Our Best

Comments

I want to say there was a “You’re not boring” chant to Storm during this match.

Big Ell

To be fair, he has mostly retired the Cattle Mutilation. He used it a handful of times in WWE, but it doesn't work as well for TV-focused matches. Body positioning makes it tougher to get close-up shots of either wrestler's face to see reaction to the move that way.

Adam Nelson

He was really impressive! And the names of some of his moves?? I'm sold 😂

Tallywags

Oh I'm looking forward to that!

Tallywags

I think it's only because he has been watching from the official ROH youtube channel, there are uploads from other sources where the entrances and post matches are included.

Dagur Hall

The rights for it are pretty expensive, so they save it for bigger matches. They'll probably use Final Countdown at All In too since it's being built as title vs career.

Adam Nelson

Okay Tally liking Bryan Danielsion this much? She's officially my favorite here

Paul Watson

That explains why they played final countdown at double or nothing

Dport

BTW the reason why the ROH matches you’ve seen so far have no entrances or post-match stuff is because back then ROH used real songs for wrestler entrances but didn’t pay for the rights. Most indies did this at the time. Bryan came out to Final Countdown, for example. If you bought the old DVDs you’d get the entrances and stuff because back then they were small time and no music companies really noticed or went after them. But later when they started uploading classic matches online they had to cut it all out. If I ever submit some old ROH stuff I’m gonna try and rip my old DVD footage and upload it.

Better Than Our Best was the first ROH and first indie show I ever watched, and it was what saved my wrestling fandom and got me into alternative wrestling. The entire card is full of great stuff.

Wade Kruse

She'll be there!

Dport

This was cool to watch, first time for me as well. Bryan Danielson will be in the main event of All In, is tally joining your Livestream for All In too?

Some additional context: This show was the night before WrestleMania 22 (also in Chicago). ROH had a tradition of running a double-header in the same city the days before WrestleMania to take advantage of the concentration of wrestling fans in town that weekend (and as mentioned, Danielson had a 56 minute match against Roderick Strong the night before). Lance Storm and Chris Jericho were in the same training class at the wrestling school they went to. They had their first match against each other. Storm's last match before this was against Jericho at ECW One Night Stand 2005. He opened his own wrestling school after retiring in 2005 and it was open until 2019.

Adam Nelson

Most of my Tally picks are going to be classic ROH or SHIMMER. Joe/Punk is a bit down on my list because of the match lengths, but I may get to them eventually.

Adam Nelson

Happy Birthday! 🎈🎉

Tallywags

Happy birthday!! 🎂 🥳 🎉

Dport

Nice that this just happened to land on my birthday. I had been a fan of Lance Storm, so him coming out of retirement for this match led to me buying my first ROH DVD. This show is what made me a fan of both Bryan Danielson and ROH in general.

Adam Nelson

Great match, we need more classic ROH. Someone has to submit the entire Joe/Punk trilogy.

Dagur Hall

That was good, never saw it at the time

There’s some interesting parallels in these guys’ WWE runs, though Bryan saw much more success. Both guys were brought in due to their wrestling skills and immediately put in situations to fail. Storm was brought into the WWE as a great wrestler with years of experience, was called boring, and was made to come out to funk music while dancing. Rather than playing into his strengths in the ring, they put him in situations to make fun of him for being a “boring” personality. Bryan was brought into WWE as arguably the best wrestler in the world, was placed on the gameshow version of NXT as a “rookie” under the tutelage of The Miz, and was called a nerd and a geek every week, even by commentary during his matches, because of his size. Bryan should have had the typical small-guy/“Vanilla midget” career where he gets chewed up and spit out by the WWE system but he just so happened to be one of the greatest to ever do it, so they had no choice but to feature him in multiple mania Main events. He’s risen to the top everywhere he’s gone, because he’s just that good. Also, pls keep Tally in these!
