Yeah, like how Punk was on a gravestone on a Drew shirt recently? I’m sure they split the profits.

He wasn’t as dominant but he occasionally would dominate :)

Let's go Cena! 👶 🗣

The origin of Suplex City. THE squash match. The death of Super Cena. The start of Brock taking the world title hostage on and off for a long time. This match meant SO much at the time and for years afterwards. Cena was never dominated like this before and it was unthinkable that this could happen to him. After this Cena got more liked, but not as liked as he is today. People already liked Cena as a person because he’s always been respectful, humble, down to earth, and SUPER dedicated to the business. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s granted the most Make-A-Wishes on the planet. Like others already said, him being pushed as the top guy for almost a decade while always going over promising up and coming talent really soured the fans on him.

I remember only hearing about this match when it happened, because I stopped watching wrestling altogether in 2012, and I rushed to watch it when I heard that Cena got destroyed by Brock. I grew up hating Cena that this was therapeutic for me at the time and this match is what got me to pay attention to wrestling again. It was Kevin Owens' debut at the end of the year that brought me back fully.

I'd say it started in 2006/2007

Super Cena era was from 2005-2014. This match right here marked the end of the Super Cena era because he was never the same after this beating but I would say 2015 was arguably his best year in-ring wise but he had taken a step back into the mid-card that year and made the US title feel special again by giving a weekly open challenge every week to young and upcoming superstars but despite 2015 being his best in-ring year, he was never as dominate again.

Chad

Best squash Match of all time though not a traditional squash match.

At the time this match was fascinating and interesting because seeing Cena got dominated like this was just unheard of. But in retrospect I kind of hate this match. It led to years of Brock having the same boring finisher/suplex spam matches over and over again, and was the official start of the “part time champion” era.

This was the start of when Brock Lesnar really started using suplexes often. Fun fact: this was the last night of the old WWE scratch logo. The next night on Monday Night Raw is when they switched to the logo they use now. They actually did use the new logo on the show, but the next night is when they started using it on everything. The lack of pop for Cena might be noticeable because, he was still Super Cena during this time. It was the same with Roman Reigns for a while. I feel like you would have a lot of rants if you were watching when Vince McMahon was booking. Imagine seeing a guy on top beating your favorite wrestlers and winning titles despite the fact that people in the crowd were rejecting them. On top of that, not pushing people who are more talented. Reigns and Cena probably wouldn’t have been as hated as much if they went heel around the time they were really being booed. Triple H is another guy who had his reign of terror on RAW. He basically had the World Heavyweight title hostage from 2002-2005. Theres videos on YouTube about it if you want to watch it. They really don’t make anti wrestler shirts unless it’s apart of the story line. Not sure if the other wrestler gets a percentage of the merch sales.

Yep, I agree. This match signaled the end of Super Cena

Ahhh the origins of Suplex City, what a time. I remember watching this live and waiting for Super Cena to turn things around and it just never happened. It was shocking. Also, I think this is still the most realistic looking match I’ve ever seen. Like if two dudes were just trying to hurt each other, this is what it would look like.

This match is THE squash match. It was also the death of Super Cena. Just a few months before, Cena beat Bray Wyatt in a feud that he absolutely should have lost. After this match he stopped winning matches a feuds that he definitely shouldn’t have and also got really good in the ring and on the mic. And for Lesnar, this match solidified him as (in my opinion) the best “final boss” wrestler of all time.

super cena was from 2007-2014, this is the match imo that ended it. He buried an entire faction by himself. It would be like Cody Soloing the bloodline by himself.

Cena has been a babyface since 2003-2004. If you watch any match after that and he gets a mixed or negative reaction it’s because a large portion of the fan base heavily disliked his character but WWE was making too much money off him during the PG era to change his character.

It’s hard to explain how big the streak was as it was happening. For some of us it was literally around for our ENTIRE lives. The fear that the streak was broken to build up Brock just to lose to Super Cena was real. This match, in my opinion, was to build up the next few years while also showing the upmost respect to the legacy of the Undertaker’s streak. If you look at the audience as Brock pins Cena there’s almost a wave of relief across everyone’s faces as they realize the WWE did this correctly. Brock pre-streak was a beast but after the streak he was basically treated as an unbeatable god.

People never really liked Cena all that much until later on in his career, it wasn't necessarily that he was always burying everyone it's just that he was always at the top of the card whilst not being well liked as a character. Alongside that, it didn't help that people took a lot of joy in booing him in that it feels rebellious to boo the person who is being pushed as the top white meat babyface. In 2015 he gained a new appreciation with his United States title open challenge which showed he could have great matches week-to-week, having a mid card title. However, I would say that he only *really* became incredibly over after the pandemic era. Likely because it's sort of easier to be well liked as a special attraction, and also because the younger fans who appreciated Cena even though he wasn't "cool" have grown up and still like him. I see why as a newer fan that must seem super weird but that's how it was back then. The super Cena era is probably from 2006 onwards until 2015, the whole time Cena was pushed as a top babyface he was never especially liked. So in general, you shouldn't expect to see Cena being very over in any match that isn't quite recent, and expect his opponents to be cheered even though they are heels (which Brock Lesnar was here).

Thats the real suplex city right there🤣
