I do usually enjoy 30 min iron man matches more. Bayley v Sasha at NXT Takeover Respect being one of my favs. I do think the Cena V Orton 60 min from Bragging Rights 2009 is great though. It’s an anything goes, falls count anywhere match so just pin/submission which adds a new dynamic I feel.

2024-07-25 10:15:37 +0000 UTCI still have a long way to go in the video, but I appreciate how quickly you grasped the psychology of the match with talking about the pros/cons of submitting quickly to avoid damage early in the match.

2024-07-24 23:24:50 +0000 UTCAppreciate you watching! Tbh, I think me and a lot of other long time fans on your page have an affinity for these types of matches that break up the more "sports entertainment" stuff you get from WWE, and Im genuinely curious how it plays for a newer fan. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the sports entertainment stuff. I guess I would compare it to a high powered offense in sports being a TON of fun to watch, but watching a defensive struggle/back and forth type of game is like watching a chess match. Wondering how creative can they be or how or if they can pull off their biggest plays. It's not something I want all the time, that'd be a slog. But some of these thrown in the mix satisfies a different itch for me. If it's not your jam, totally cool, I am just curious to see how it goes. Thanks for watching!

2024-07-24 22:38:36 +0000 UTCI see the point of the match having some moments throughout that wasn't necessary, but I think most matches have at least some fluff to pad out the time given or to catch their breath, and in a 60 minute match they'll be more of it. I think the 60 minutes is justified for the story they were telling throughout though. Danielson has a history of going the distance and demonstrated his confidence in his cardio with the jumping jacks in the beginning and never needing any respite period, like when they were offered the oxygen he didn't take any. While MJF all throughout the match was taking breathers on the outside, drinking water anytime he could and being administered oxygen, and I don't think you can tell that narrative if the match isn't an hour long at least.

2024-07-24 20:53:28 +0000 UTCThe “authority figure doesn’t want a draw and restarts the match” is a very old trope in wrestling that used to be a little more common, it’s not really anything specific to this match. It’s just a storytelling tool, to manipulate the crowd. You’ll see similar narrative events like this come up as you slowly go through wrestling history I’m sure. TK is the only established authority figure at this point, if this happened in WWE for example they would have announced that Adam Pearce made the decision or whatever. Also, part of the context for this match going in was MJF wanting to prove he could hang with what many consider to be the best wrestler ever, in a match type that embodies the idea of a long, gruelling wrestling match. It being an iron man match wasn’t just an arbitrary stipulation, the idea was that MJF was attempting to beat Bryan at his own game.

2024-07-24 19:47:24 +0000 UTC60 minute matches date back to the territory days back then all the companies worked together under the banner of the National Wrestling Alliance or NWA they had a board that decided who would be NWA champions. the promotions themselves would have their champions but the NWA would be "World Champions." The idea was that the champions would travel around the territories and wrestle matches with the champions of all the various promotions and would basically make them look good by barely beating them making them look like they just survived them often by wrestling to the time limit which was often 60 minutes. Being able to go for 60 minutes in a match is like a badge of honor and means you're legit. The Ironman match concept is basically an evolution of that.

2024-07-24 19:41:56 +0000 UTCJust finished watching with you. Appreciate you taking the time with this one. I understand your point of view with the length of this. There's a few things worth noting that a new fan wouldn't know. Iron man matches are not a new match type, or at least matches that go long. Alot of wrestlers in the past used to go an hour long back in the territory days and the challenge was always keeping the fans engaged for the entire hour. Not everyone has achieved this as people have said there has been really boring iron man matches in the past. With these matches the anticipation usually hangs on how the score looks towards the end of the time. On the most part there's always a last second pinfall or something. So you have to get creative to try to come up with a finish that keeps people guessing. I think they achieved this here. With the tie break finish into sudden death. (Also worth noting that it was a common thing with a match restart to end straight away in a roll up which was something else they avoided doing here) Another point is that Danielson in his indy career and ROH career was known for his wrestling endurance so to see him have this match was something of a love letter to his old indy days. It's why it was a big deal that he challenged MJF to this match stipulation. Also, as you saw, during this title rein, MJF was known for avoiding wrestling as much as possible because he thought he was to good to just give his wrestling appearances away. So the match was also built to legitimise him as well. Hope this helps with a few things. Once again thanks for taking the time!

2024-07-24 18:51:37 +0000 UTCThere also had been some 30 minute iron man matches in wrestling, but this always felt wrong to me. I mean it is called an iron man match, it should go >= 60 minutes.

2024-07-24 18:43:26 +0000 UTCThe stipulation was chosen due to the story. Bryan callenged Max to an Iron Man match because he beleived he couldnt last 60 mins and wasnt a deserving champion. Max made the stip that Bryan had to win every match between then and this match, paying off wrestlers and locking bryan's locker room door to try and get out of it. Max also brings up how if Bryan keeps going at the level that he does, that he won't be able to pick up and play with his kids due to injury and that Bryan takes his family and his life for granted due to his love of pro wrestling. After this match bryan is sat backstage and crying saying the reason he tapped at the end was because of what Max said, just as much as it was due to the pain he was in, he said that he was in the hold and couldn't feel his arm and that's why he tapped. At the time I didn't love the tap finish but Bryan sold me on it after that promo.

2024-07-24 18:24:18 +0000 UTCI was at this show and had a pretty good view of MJF throwing the drink at the kid. His mother was furious too the point they sent Amanda Huber out to sit with them and give them a bunch of free merch as well as took them backstage after the show.

2024-07-24 18:24:12 +0000 UTCHaha I feel ya bro. I'm certain the swerve hangman match will win a vote at some point but I feel we should ease you in to an AEW Deathmatch before you see what is regarded as the most horrifically brilliant match between those 2

2024-07-24 18:22:14 +0000 UTCOh shit, I forgot. When MJF threw that drink at that kid, that was tequila and got right in the kid's eye. He got in a bit of trouble for it.

2024-07-24 18:17:27 +0000 UTCMJF had another 60 minute match last wednesday vs Will Ospreay on TV lol. The audience were into it the entire time tbf, not worn out by the end. and the TV ratings persisted through the whole thing. I think it depends on how the match is wrestled. The Shawn/Bret one was rest hold central, but there's been a few since that keep the pace up. My personal fav is probs the Brock/Angle one from Smackdown, maybe the best match in Smackdown history?

2024-07-24 18:13:09 +0000 UTCLmao when you struggled to watch MJF squeeze Danielson's cut forehead I thought "damn I don't think he will make it through Hangman Vs Swerve"

2024-07-24 17:50:46 +0000 UTCYou saying the 60 minute time limit Potentially effecting the crowd’s and your enjoyment of the match because there’s no match can end at anytime. That is absolutely my opinion of the WM 12 match between Bret hart and Shawn Michaels. That was an iron man match. The crowd was dead for 90-95% of it. Completely the opposite in this match. My 2nd favorite iron man match ever. Behind the 2000 one with triple h and the rock. Imo 👍👍
