Mark Henry's Fake Retirement

Comments

Funny to hear a Jacob Henry reference from 2013 knowing WWE just signed him!

Big Ell

Did anybody else experience mad lag when watching this?

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

That makes quite a bit of sense. When, us jaded fans, we tend to look at a promo, a move, a persona.. we act like, "oh its recycled material!" But that very same segment, the New fans, they call it an "easter egg". So, while Punk was in AEW, him and Dax Harwood in a Dynamite match did a move by move homage for their wrestling idol, Bret Hart. There's been many times a callback happens, and we try to compare.. say its not better than the OG. Of course, just having the wrestlers put it out there. And to honor legendary moments, most of us fans do eat it up.. Leo Dicaprio meme.. just gets it!

So the Mae Young reference is a little weird. So Mae Young was like 80 years old back in 1999 when Mark Henry was in his prime and they did a storyline where Mark Henry impregnated her and she (and I'm not kidding) actually gave birth to a hand. A freaking hand on live television. Vince just sometimes has the worst storylines lol. That's why everyone was laughing when Mark Henry said that.

Chad

No. They hadn't had a previous match. Mark Henry just randomely interrupted Cena during a promo and faked a retirement speech so, it's not a one for one comparison to the AJ Styles storyline. This one just came out of nowhere because Mark Henry was a babyface when this promo happened. It was really shocking because no-one believed at the time that wwe would actually ever book a fake retirement.

Chad

I love the video package week idea because like promos, you could do alot of videos in one week.

Chad

Can’t wait for you to do a “video package” week as well as a “women’s wrestling” week!!

This is kinda the reason why super Cena was a thing. Mark Henry delivered career changing promo and didn't win the match against Cena and never held a big one

No it wasn’t the same situation as AJ. Mark was a mid carder even lower than that during this time. And i believe he wasn’t on tv for a month or more. Someone fact check it but yea it was very possible retirement would have been to the fans eyes. Also the fact that Cena wasn’t inside of the ring during the promo made it more legit. Imo

Phillyman!!

That's beautiful

I remember the first time I saw this promo, I cried a bit. Mark Henry had me hook, line, and sinker.

I had stopped watching wrestling by this point so I don't know if I would have bought into this being real, but I have an idea to why this one seems more believable than the AJ promo to me. This one came off the back of Ric Flair's retirement in 2008, Shawn Michaels' in 2010 and Edge's forced retirement in 2011. So the fans were kind of conditioned into seeing this every couple of years. While in recent years, wrestlers either retire and transition into a producer role without acknowledging that in kayfabe, like Bobby Roode, Jason Jordan and to a lesser extent Triple H, or announce that their retirement match is coming up, like Kurt Angle, Batista and now John Cena. So AJ coming out to announce his retirement out of nowhere didn't seem right, but that could be my bias because he is one of my fav wrestlers of all time and the idea of his retirement match not being at Mania would be a waste lol.

This came out of nowhere which is part of why it was so good and unexpected and everyone bought it. Mark Sold it perfectly as well. Oh god Mae Young is a whole thing lol.

Mae Young was an older women's wrestler that Mark had a storyline romance with in 1999-2000 (when she was in her late 70s) that ended with her "giving birth" to a hand.

Adam Nelson

The Mae Young reference is a callback to when Mark Henry fell in love with an elderly former wrestling legend named Mae Young while under his former persona “Sexual Chocolate”. They had sex on camera and Mae Young gave birth to a hand. The hand made a return at Raw episode 1000 after 12 years of inactivity. It had grown significantly by then and had learned to speak. Mae Young was also powerbombed off the Raw stage through a stack of tables at 77 years old. She’s an absolute legend and made wrestling appearances from the 1940s into the 2010s
