Cm Punks Pipebomb AND CM Punks contract negotiation w/ Vince 2011
Added 2024-07-19 17:00:10 +0000 UTCComments
The kayfabe reason, imo, why Vince is so desperate to re-sign Punk even if he thinks Cena would win is because he can't risk the embarrassment and devaluing of his company's greatest prize. In kayfabe, that World Title means everything to the wrestlers, the company, and the business. So, to have someone win it and walk out of the company with it, that act devalues the title for the rest of time. Any subsequent champion that is crowned post-Punk is a paper champion, they didn't defeat the ACTUAL title holder to win the honor, the belt they carry is a knock-off replica of the real thing. So, for Vince, it was more important than any other consideration to keep that prestige and value to his company via the proper title and proper champ.

2024-09-20 05:01:05 +0000 UTCOther people have already said this, but it can't be stated enough just how crazy this was in 2011 compared to how it would be now in 2024. Now it almost seems normal to just casually namedrop everything like that. Back then it was completely unheard of. I still remember watching this live when it happened and thinking "I can't believe my ears".

2024-09-19 12:58:36 +0000 UTCJesus Christ... listening to both Punk and Cena in these promos in 2024 is insufferable. At the time, Punk was 100% right about everything he said about Vince and the company...but now it has aged like milk and after his stint on AEW with him acting like a complete self-serving jackass, it's clear that Punk only really cares about one person and his name is Phil Brooks. John Cena's promo ability has always been praised as being 'top quality', but after re-watching this I couldn't disagree more. Cena said some of the dumbest, corniest shit in this promo that might as well have been written by Vince himself (Sufferin Succotash anyone?)

2024-08-27 22:08:50 +0000 UTCTo answer your final question, Punk left in 2014 and retired until 2021 when he came to AEW. The Pipebomv is generally considered a top 3 promo all time, it's his magnum opus, so yeah it gets brought up alot.

2024-08-01 17:37:17 +0000 UTCIf you enjoyed this Punk/Cena saga, you should really watch the rematch at Summerslam 2011, their next match at Night of Champions 2012, and their Raw match from 2/5/2013. All good/great stuff!

2024-07-20 08:06:07 +0000 UTCIn the 90s Alundra Blayze/Madusa was WWF Women's Champion when her contract expired and she took the belt to WCW Monday Nitro, where she infamously threw it in the trash on live TV

2024-07-20 07:01:11 +0000 UTCmy bad bruh 😭😭 i just think the wording caught me off guard cuz you said “he got fired on his wedding day, and then his wife left a year later” so i automatically jumped to conclusions because the last piece of context was marriage so that’s my bad lol 😂

2024-07-20 01:21:32 +0000 UTCThe power dynamic is Punk has a championship match on the last day of his current contract and is threatning to walk out as champ. You have to keep in mind this is a storyline built around reality as wrestlers did leave WWE in the 90's without telling them and went to WCW.

2024-07-19 20:51:03 +0000 UTCDefinitely! If it’s from 2012 it is very likely that I’ll have that on my Network. Unfortunately most of the new stuff that is uploaded to Peacock doesn’t make it to Network anymore and it’s a huge loss for a WWE fan from Europe :(

2024-07-19 20:31:48 +0000 UTCI agree with most of what you said here but I have to point out the suspension 100% a work, it was all kayfabe. Punk has spoken about this and it was talked about in his doc, it was all planned. They gave him a mic to “air his grievances” but they knew most of what he was going to say.
David
2024-07-19 20:30:01 +0000 UTCDoesn't quite carry the shock that it did back then because so much has changed. Punk broke many rules here that absolutely were never broken ever such as saying pro wrestler, forget mentioning another wrestling company by name you couldn't even allude that there were other companies, giving a shout out to Colt Cabana a wrestler not under contract with WWE, mentioning Brock Lesnar at all after he left in the mid 2000s using Paul Heymans name who I believe wasn't working for WWE at the time and had been fired for arguing with Vince over many things I'm sure but one of them being CM Punk mentioning members of upper management who weren't even on TV it really blurred the lines and people wondered if Punk went rogue. The truth is they would have cut him off at the start if had been but they basically gave him a live mic to air his grievances and it shocked the wrestling world at the time.

2024-07-19 20:25:46 +0000 UTCPunk did earn the opportunity, he won a number 1 contenders match. Vince suspended punk after the pipebomb and had canceled the match but Cena, being the babyface that he is, still begged to have punk and the match reinstated. Vince said if Cena lost than it’s on him and he would fire him. He wanted to re-sign Punk because I guess he wasn’t 100% confident Cena could do it, which is why he tries to screw him in the match. Which Cena also stops if you remember. After MITB, he was going to fire Cena but HHH came out to inform Vince that the board voted him out and he was relieved of his day to day duties. They appointed HHH the new kayfabe COO, and he’s been the main authority figure since. Though Vince would still return to make appearances as the owner down the line.

2024-07-19 18:59:11 +0000 UTCHim mentioning Colt Cobana is what ages the worst, a whole can of worms, I don't know the full story but in short in 2014 when Punk, after his walk out, earlier on, he was released, and they waited for his wedding day to AJ Lee (you got to check out some of her work, with Zach Rider, Cena, Bryan, and CM Punk, along with some of her matches). He aired it all out on a podcast episode, one that may be worth reacting to because it is probably one of the most significant events in modern wrestling history with all that happened after it. They go in a court battle, neither of them talk since really. It even bleed into AEW stuff, where there were rumors that Punk asked Tony for Colt to leave AEW, which to my knolewdge isn't true. This lead to Hangman Adam Page going off script. And after there match at a press conference CM Punk went to town on all the back stage rumors. (He also brought some muffins with him, and that's why at WWE he always bringing pastries out for there press conferences) After that this Brawl Out happend, leading to the suspencions of Kenny Omega, Matt and Nick Jackson, CM Punk, and a few other people, as well as others. When Punk eventually returned he got his own show AEW Collision, and it lead to Brawl In, which lead to CM Punk being fired and Jack Perry being suspended for the "Real Glass incident" and everything back stage. Also he mentions Luke Gallows, he was in a tag team under the name Festus, he later joins CM Punk's faction The Straight Edge Society, picking up the name Luke Gallows and is eventually released, he then goes to Japan and is one of the founding members of one of the biggest factions in wrestling history, The Bullet Club, alongside a few others such as Karl Anderson and the original leader Finn Ballor. He is currently back in WWE also you prob will recognize him as one of AJ Styles friends in the OC alongside Karl Anderson

2024-07-19 18:06:12 +0000 UTCWhen CM Punk left WWE in 2014, he also left professional wrestling. So when he joined AEW in 2021 it had been 7 years since he last wrestled.

2024-07-19 17:59:50 +0000 UTCFor better context: You may not be shocked by stuff Punk said, because of changes that happened in the company after HHH took over. We are talking about the times when even saying „Professional Wrestler” instead of „Superstar” was strictly prohibited in WWE. Punk broke so many rules in these segments. Calling out former WWE employees at the time, using names of other promotions, breaking the fourth wall, calling Stephanie and HHH idiotic and doofy. A lot of things Punk said to Vince during negotiations were referring to the actual problems of the company at the time, and that’s what made Punk instantly over with crowd despite being a heel :) And after the Pipe Bomb promo, Punk got suspended causing a lot of buzz around that case. What I personally thought was that Punk got legitimately suspended, but WWE by seeing an opportunity to turn all of this to a great storyline decided to reinstate him and do the match anyway. In kayfabe a week after the pipe bomb and a week prior to negotiations, Cena asked Vince to lift the suspension for Punk. McMahon agreed but added the stipulation that if Cena loses to Punk, he’ll be fired. That’s also why Punk winning at MITB was so shocking. Of course Cena didn’t get fired and after MITB Punk disappeared for 2 weeks. At the time WWE organized a Tournament for a new WWE Champion. If you want to make another Promo Week, hopefully someone will submit the continuation of this amazing story :) Take care! Edit: My theory appeared to be wrong, but I’m gonna leave it right there as my thoughts from 2011 ☺️ Thanks for correcting it David!

2024-07-19 17:58:28 +0000 UTCCM Punk old theme was from an actual band called Killswitch Engage. That theme was also the theme for a WWE PPV called Judgement Day in 2006, and was Randy Orton's theme for one night on Smackdown in 2006. He switched to Cult of Personality a few weeks after Money in The Bank. He was off TV for a minute after Money in the Bank and returned on the July 25th edition of RAW in 2011 with that theme.

2024-07-19 17:58:18 +0000 UTCCM Punk really left WWE In January of 2014, The 2011 stuff had nothing to do with him leaving for 10 years. He had a falling out with Vince and backstage and stuff behind the scenes in 2014 that made him want to quit and quit wrestling all together

2024-07-19 17:44:17 +0000 UTCHe won a triple threat match but Vince could have cancelled it but Cena begged him to un suspend cm punk to have the match at the ppv

2024-07-19 17:40:11 +0000 UTCThis makes sense. But then couldn't he just cancel the match? Or was this opportunity against cena "earned" in some way.

2024-07-19 17:36:35 +0000 UTCThe reason Vince McMahon had to listen to cm punk because Vince didn’t want to lose the wwe championship and have punk show up on roh or njpw with it. Storyline wise it would be embarrassing for it to happen

2024-07-19 17:34:31 +0000 UTCDefinitely should check out CM Punk and MJF Promo in AEW. Then cross over into watching some MJF promos because Punk is top 5 best promos of all time and MJF is pretty damn close. The only reason MJF isnt, is because he’s only been doing promos on TV for 5 years where everyone else like Rick Flair, Mick Foley and Chris Jericho, etc. have been doing them for a couple of decades at least. A great promo can sometimes overshadow the match its promoting, simply because the guys talking are just that damn charismatic.

2024-07-19 17:29:59 +0000 UTCCM Punk’s response when asked about the pipebomb: “I had to make an outline for Vince and I didn’t say anything I wrote in the outline, I just know that I needed him to agree and then I went out there and said whatever I wanted. I knew what I wanted to say, I knew I wasn’t stepping over the line and I knew nobody was going to be pissed at me. The thing with live television is, it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. If I would have asked him to say all that stuff, he would have been like, ‘Don’t mention Brock, don’t mention Paul Heyman.’ Those guys, at the time, were persona non Grata. He would have been like, ‘What the hell is Ring of Honor? Don’t mention New Japan.’

2024-07-19 17:19:52 +0000 UTCFor the pipe bomb, it’s important to know how many rules he broke in the promo. At the time, mentioning wrestlers/wrestling, other promotions, Hulk Hogan, Brock Lesnar, and Paul Heyman were all things Vince prohibited.

2024-07-19 17:15:57 +0000 UTCHeel R-Truth was actually awesome. He once beat up John Morrison and smoked a cigarette casually at ringside over his body while chucking. He main evented a few PPVs including The Rock’s return match in 2011, which was Miz/Truth vs Cena/Rock. The Miz and R-Truth getting arrested at Hell in a Cell during the build to that match made it a really hot angle. He also had a great main event championship run in TNA for a few years.
