Sneak Peek: Adventurer's Base & Downtime Activities
Added 2020-09-17 17:54:41 +0000 UTCHello Secret Door Club!
I'm here to show you a quick preview of some new systems and features we're going to introduce in the next quest pack, specifically: the Adventurer's Base and Downtime Activities!
The Adventurer's Base
After the player characters' adventuring team has been hired by the council, they need a place to call home! In this month's Quest Pack, we're going to introduce a base-building system that will allow the Game Master and the players to collaborate together on creating the ideal adventurer's base.
The council will give the player characters a choice of six unique base locations that the player characters can start from. These bases each come with their own set of Base Features, and during the campaign, the adventurers can spend their gold to expand their base with additional Base Features over time. Some examples of base features are a sparring yard for training, an alchemy lab where potions can be brewed, or a library where wizards can study.
To give you an idea of what a Base Feature might look like, here is an example:

This brings us to...
Downtime Activities
In between completing quests in the Stars of the Sea campaign, the player characters will experience some downtime. To give the characters something to do during those times, and to help the players and game master feel like some time has passed, we're introducing Downtime Activities.
Players can use these activities to do some basic things like craft items, brew potions, research topics or trade goods for profit, as well as some more social activities like performing for a crowd, getting to know their allies or even running a bar!
To give you an idea of what a Downtime Activity might look like, here is an example:

As you can see from these examples, base features and downtime activities are connected to one-another. Player characters will be more successful at downtime activities when they have the appropriate features added to their home base.
By combining these features, your team of adventurers can spend their time between adventures honing their skills into becoming the ultimate fighting machine, getting rich by manufacturing and trading goods, or opening a theatre and putting on plays for the people! It's all up to you.
The Base Builder
The centrepiece of this Quest Pack will be the base builder form. This allows the group to put together a starter base with a set of interesting features in place, and to grow their base over time. With the Quest Pack will come 6 pre-generated bases set all around the city of Silver Spires, that each have their own unique flavour and starting features. Below are some sketches for schematics that will accompany these pre-generated bases:

This system is meant to form the glue that binds all the different quests the adventurers go on during their campaign together, and give the players a sense of continuity and achievement as they build out their base.
Are you excited to use a system like this? What do you think your group would spend their downtime doing?

I can already tell where my party is going to not even consider a couple of them...and have a TERRIBLE time picking between the options left. Just the sort of hard choice you love to see people have to deal with in-game, and then look forward to seeing how they deal with that choice going forward. Great stuff!
