What's Flying In My Eclipse Video? - Smarter Every Day 298

Something very strange happened during my recording of the eclipse. I'm interested to see what you think.

https://youtu.be/bQF51mqzrY4

Also, be looking for a special post here on Patreon for all paid members. I'm going to give you a copy of the photo... and a way to get a printout if you'd like. I had the photo rescanned by Michael Strickland on a special drum scanner.... so the file itself for this single photos is well over a gigabyte. Be on the lookout for this post!

You'll notice this video does not have a sponsor. I made it solely with Patreon support, and I'm super grateful to everyone who supports here! Thank you!

If you're able to figure out the satellite I'm super interested to know what you think!

Thank you!

Destin

This is so cool!

Samuel Svendsen

love this so much!

Jude Cranney

Georg, It looks to me like satellite 18120 passes over Jackson, MO on April 8th indeed from South to North, but also from West to East which would contradict what we saw in Destin's video. I have found two other satellites you might want to look into as possible options for what Destin saw: Satellite 35376 "CZ-4 DEB" Roughly at 189deg (az) and 50deg (el) at C3 time Satellite 46496 "ICEYE-X7" Roughly at 182deg (az) and 50deg(el) at C3 time

As an avid film photographer that came from digital and missed out on my late uncles knowledge of decades, worth the film, photography knowledge I really enjoy everything you do and put out there. I develop all my film in my bathroom. I scan multiple ways as well as looking into modifying cameras from , really awesome engineers who have made amazing things so that we could bring back things such as Polaroids to the RZ 67 for example. I enjoyed your series that you did at the Kodak factory. I thought that was amazing and I am very impressed with your ability to get all of this done, especially on a piece of slide film, knowing how finicky they are. Thanks for everything and I’m looking forward to always seeing your content. If you ever find yourself in the central North Carolina area you’re more than welcome to swing through for some fun and science. Macro(6-7mm on one 35mm slide) on film is hard and I’m working on that but would love to show you some things in progress. Keep at it. -ae

Adam Edmundson

Destin, could you make the actual raw footage where you caught the unidentified orbital objects available to your Patreon Army? I would really like to study that film frame by frame...

Ronnal Clark

Not sure the best way to let you know about this… got my beautiful metal print with the attached cleat and it is a wee bit bent from the shipping. I’m quite delighted with it and only wish to let you know that this is an issue so the shipper can prevent further incidents.

Linda BKuzma

Destin, I've been watching you for a while and I love so much about the videos you produce. This video quite literally changed me from being one who thinks about supporting you to a real live supporter! 😀 I created a photo of a lunar eclipse sometime in the 1980's that shows the full moon rising at intervals of 15 minutes and getting darker as it climbs. Like yours, it was on one frame of film (only easy we had then). Not nearly as well done as yours, but I'm proud of it. Your photo is now my phone's wallpaper and I love it every time I see it!

My family and I have been watching Smarter Every Day for a long time(helicopter physics series). My 2 sons(17, 15 now), wife and I always look forward to the next video. Thank you for the great informative, entertaining and wholesome content. This past Sunday a good friend asked if I had seen this video yet and I said no. He said, "it is everything I love in one video." I have to agree with him. This may be my favorite video on this channel. If has everything, family, friends, achievement, science, art and the thing that does for me what running girls does for Matt...lol...people from differing backgrounds, experiences and passions coming together to achieve something awesome. Thank you SO MUCH for showing us this story. I literally cried while watching it with my family. You don't know us but you provide something to our family that we have trouble finding elsewhere... something we all equally enjoy, look forward to and connect with each other through. THANK YOU

Chad Kirkessner

Where did you see that?

Nebbie Loon

Very happy for Destin that he got the shot and that it came out perfectly. I would like to cast my vote for selling a signed copy of the big wide printouts shown in the video. Either way I greatly enjoyed the video.

Aaron Rossen

Me too. I can’t wait to get a print to put on my wall. It’s absolutely gorgeous

David Quiring

What an incredible photo, I'm so glad to be part of this community here to get a chance to be part of this.

Jason Manning

I'm patiently waiting for the image file/printout. Genuinely so excited to get a copy of it

Eric

I have one of your baseballs, and thought I was already a patreon supporter, but here I am again because I must have dropped it at some point, or forgot my other account name lol

Skyfire

I'm excited for us to get a printout

NOMOORE1

Is there photo already available to purchase/download?

Sebastian Luna Cortes

Is there any Patreon discount for the print? I'm seeing $70 for US Metallic, $100 for International Metallic, and $14 for International Paper

Milan

Hey Destin, hope you see this. This was an awesome video, very inspiring as always. Your excitement about this satellite made me care about it too. So I dove into it and I think I know which one flew by your lenses there. Initial Data: Location: 37.43° N, -89.644° E (GMT -5) C3 time according to Nasa Eclipse Explorer: 2:02:30 PM Sun coordinates at C3: 209° azim, 57° elev Rough Satellite Flight Path estimated from footage: S → N Digging through a bunch of satellites on in-the-sky.org left me with a few satellites which met the requirements of: max. elevation >= 57° max elevation at 2:02:30 PM +- 1 min flight path S → N My best fit so far was “Cosmos 1859”, with: Sky coordinates: 206° azim, 57° elev at 2:02:40 PM flight path: SSW → NNE Calculating its GPS coordinates using Cosmos1859’s height (1440 km), your location and camera angles: 37.43° N - 818 km = 30° N -89.644° E - 453 km = -93.64° E → 30° N, -93,64° E Celestrak Data for Cosmos1859 interpreted by in-the-sky.org: → 31° N, -93° E This is close enough for me :D I think your satellite was “Cosmos 1859” (Norad Id: 18120), a russian satellite launched in 1987 It took a few hours but I had a lot of fun doing the research and I learned a lot about coordinates, time zones, satellite flight paths and eclipse mechanics. Thank you for spreading your enthusiasm all the way to Germany and inspiring people with your videos.

Georg Simmelbauer

You've outdone yourself yet again Destin, what a fantastic image! Also really motivating to get a long-overdue upgrade of my digital camera running on its last legs.

Rick Rijpers

Would love a copy of this photo. We were only a few miles east of you and saw the eclipse at Sam A Baker state park. Love your videos!

Peter Buckley

I AM SO EXCITED!!

Kevin McCarthy

I love love love this video, In South Africa it was raining all day in Johannesburg and we missed our shot of catching the penumbral lunar eclipse. Where can we buy or download this photo? I'd love to print it on canvas for my apartment.

Uncle Moe

Family came to SC for the 2017 Eclipse, one cousin from Paris. His brother and my son took pictures. The cousin got one picture with a faint Regulus in it. He was SO Excited!

Sub Todd

Would really love to get that photo!

Arjun Bindu Jyothikumar

Dude you could get rich just selling cool photos of sciency stuff. I WANT that eclipse photo hanging in my living room! I can already sense your next photo project... "The natural beauty of Laminar Flow!" :)

Ralph Ralpherson

Same here. I am a huge fan of Destin. Has been my oldest follow on you tube. I have wanted to support on Patreon and this video gave me the feels that finally convinced me to support!

Danny Haws

Would love to have a photo also!

Doyle Glaze II

I would love to buy a print too ! I’m so excited about the opportunity to have the wonderful picture you took, my family and I watched your videos and his app guided us through the eclipse and we love eclipses now too because of how interesting you helped us realize they are, thank you Destin ! You’re getting more loved by so many people you may never even meet more and more everyday!

RENDEZVOUS WITH DESTINY Q

Love to buy a print of the eclipse photo.

jeffrey Weimer

Absolutely!

James Barnhill

I had tears when you showed us the photo of all the contacts of the eclipse.

Brent Boardman

Would love to buy a print if you end up selling them!

Mare

A fun video as always. Can't wait for the full photo!

Tyson Lidback

Another great video, thanks and what a fantastic photo (old style) impressive - with regard to the interloping objects, the one on the left crossed in front of the moon, so from where would it be lit?

Alan Cook

The eclipse was a great day with the entire family enjoying it together. I'd love to buy a quality print of this photo. It would be a perfect reminder of the experience, a way to support Destin, and a lovely piece of artwork.

Jason Kuehn

The eclipse photo for sale would be nice.

PK9 SP

Please offer the photo for sale. I would love a copy.

JODY MCCULLOUGH

I love the comment, "Interested people are interesting!"

John Sullivan

I am, admittedly, a bit jealous and envious of everyone that has gotten to see either or both of the eclipses from 2017 and this year; both times I have been overseas and unable to travel in order to see them. Despite that, I am ecstatic for you getting to experience them as well as share this years with Dr. Telepun. I am also incredibly grateful for you and your willingness and ability to share those experiences with everyone else and is one of the things I love about photography. Thank you doesn't adequately cover it...but thank you all the same, Destin.

Eric Eff

Destin, you've got to make stickers of that and make them available!

Mike McRoberts

I love the verse you posted at the end of the video. Thanks for allowing me a moment to pause and reflect on Scripture - there's no better time than after 20-30 minutes of watching your video and marveling.

Matthew Anderson

i Just joined your patreon... I would love to make a print out of that photo... how would I go about getting a copy? Thank you!

Pink Poodle Crafts - Stacy Evans

Destin, thank you so much for being willing to share this photo! It is truly an incredible image and amazing achievement. The attention to detail, the effort of finding an analog film camera, working with a network of multi-disciplinary experts… It is just excellent work. I commend you! Your love of science and your love of sharing your love of science are inspirational.

Tucker

Wow, I would love to know how to make a high quality print of that photo you captured! I live in Central Ohio and I watched the eclipse with my family. I would LOVE to mark that special day I shared with them by giving them each a framed print of your photo. What a gift that would be...

Toby Hord

New member here and what a wonderful experience and picture

Charles Barbano III

thank you

satsut 25

(I paused my Patreon for a bit, but would still love the chance to buy a print if I can.)

Sean Kelly

Man I hope there is a way to do a one time download or get a print of this photo.

Sean Kelly

Looking forward for the photo download! I was inspired by your older eclipse video and managed to view it this year. It was truly amazing.

Conrado

I actually cried on the moment where you showed the photo you took. It's a piece of history

Ihor Horiachkivskyi

I filmed a Falcon9 launch from Vandenberg a few years ago, and I'm 99% sure a satellite moved through the frame during the boost-back burn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq0f_tgLFSE The colors are exaggerated there. Daylight satellite spotting became a fun hobby for a while. I captured the Tianhe space station going right next to the moon in broad daylight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5Vewez-X5o

Dorian Raymer

Amazing photo! Nice work!

Dorian Raymer

I learned about the app from your show in the first place and it was working really well. I missed the shadow bands which was disappointing but I still got to see the Eclipse which was awesome :)

Deanna C

The one that crosses the disc of the sun stays lit the whole time. Does that rule out a glint of sunlight from the side?

John Rauser

That's going on my wall! Freaking Awesome!

Mike Kowalski

Oh, that’s going to be awesome.

Smarter Every Day

Be on the lookout in the next couple of days. If you support on Patreon, you’re going to get it for just whatever it costs me. Thank you so much for being here! It means a lot.

Smarter Every Day

I think that’s a great idea

Smarter Every Day

There’s something interesting about doing it on film though isn’t there? It’s a piece of physical matter that was there with you at the time.

Smarter Every Day

Physically taping it is an interesting idea

Smarter Every Day

I have to go back and remember what my aperture was

Smarter Every Day

Be on the lookout for a post in the next couple of days!

Smarter Every Day

Oh no! This is the first I’ve heard of it and I’m working for someone

Smarter Every Day

I’m asking the same thing. It could also be the glint from the sun maybe?

Smarter Every Day

Thank you for being here! So glad you are here!

Smarter Every Day

Haha!

Smarter Every Day

Yes.

Smarter Every Day

Look for a post in the next couple of days! It’s taking us a long time to get all the systems set up, but rest assured it is yours.

Smarter Every Day

There’s a way you can set it up for a maximum per month. Thank you for being here!

Smarter Every Day

It’s yours! Be on the lookout for a post in the next few days!

Smarter Every Day

I’m so glad everything worked out for you! Aren’t Shadowband wild!?

Smarter Every Day

I’ll post it here soon!

Smarter Every Day

You can do it!

Smarter Every Day

Thank you so much! I’m really glad you’re here. Be on the lookout for a post in the next few days.

Smarter Every Day

I hope I find out myself!

Smarter Every Day

Be looking for a post here soon!

Smarter Every Day

Aaaahhh yesss! I've recently started on the eclipse photography journey. I'm taking it slower than Destin... but my OR shot wasn't bad, and I caught the solar flare with my TX shot - I want to put this up as inspiration, and go for a composite for Iceland.

Anon for now

I know what you mean, I REALLY want that photo.

Joseph terrazas

I need one of those prints framed on the wall!

Robert Givens

I hope you share exact details on what is flying by on your video.

dhunton

Wow - just wow! The smile on my face throughout this video... I've not uncontrollably grinned like this in too long! I've watched loads of videos of this eclipse but this is the one that communicated the event to the point of emotion! Thank you Destin and family and friends for allowing us to share even an inkling of the sheer awe, wonder and joy of that day (and the joy of the film coming out fantastically)!

Arkman

Wow! Would love to get a print of that <3

Karen Zhen

Every video of yours blows my mind. Keep up the amazing work man!

Made In Britain

What an amazing video. I’ve been subscribed to you for over 5 years, but this video convinced me to become a patreon member. You are doing such great things destin.

Hans Stam

Thanks a lot Destin for sharing all these amazing stories with us. Watching this video was a delight ! Cheers from France

Abbot K

For sure! I'm a self taught 3D experimenter, in part inspired by you; Do you know how gravitational lensing creates duplicate galaxy images? I make stereoscopic images out of that - I think you'd get giddy looking at them. It's unexpected and I'd love to share them with you. A big thank you, Destin - for all the autodidacts such as myself who need educational help!

Emerge Holographic

This video gave me goosebumps like none other. I've had a love for film photography since my dad first shared his love for it with me as a child. He taught me about film composites a very long time ago, but despite having one of the best 35mm cameras for the job (Pentax LX), I still haven't tried it. You just gave me a life goal, and I'm going to do everything in my power to one day attempt the same thing. Stay awesome, Destin.

Charles Skinner

Going the wrong way to chase the shadow, right? It should have been going parallel to the motion of the moon against the sun, right?

Steve Jones

I think I say this for every video, but this is the most awesome one! :-) Seriously though, it is largely because of Smarter Every Day that I became so interested in solar eclipses in the first place, and I was lucky enough to see both the 2017 and 2024 ones in totality with my family, and being educated in advance for them! For all of us, it is one of our most amazing memories. I talked about trying to make a composite photo (not one shot!) to look like what you made, but unfortunately, my camera wasn't in focus enough to make it useful. I would love to get a copy of this photo printed out for a 'proxy memory'.. If I didn't take the picture, at least it is of the same eclipse, and I know the origin of the picture!!! Thanks for what you are doing, letting us live through you vicariously. Well worth the patreon subscriptions to support you!

Steve Jones

Destin, your 2017 prep videos got me excited to see that eclipse, and it is one of a select few most cherished memories for me. I happen to live in the path of totality for this year's as well, and my wife and I organized the whole day with our homeschool co-op and some other loved ones. We used Dr. Telepun's excellent resources, and set up most of his stations for the 50 or so people who attended. It was another incredible experience, and this time we were able to share it with even more people, including young minds for whom we were able to direct their focus and explain what was happening, as well as to use the whole day to glorify God—Psalm 19 was stuck in my head the whole day! For our simpler aspirations, everything worked out flawlessly (I was particularly thrilled we got to see shadow bands this time!), and I'm sure this eclipse, too, will reside in my memory for the rest of my life. Thanks so much for doing all of this, and equipping the rest of us to see, understand, and wonder!

Jeremy Nettles

This was great. Looking forward to getting the print.

Joan Ware

Truely awe-inspiring, Destin! What a picture. But I think you have the wrong branch of government in view; could they be NASA’s WB-57 jet planes chasing the shadow?

Keno

I would so pay for a copy of this photo. Also, I will be looking forward to the digital download of it.

Ben Trammell

As an amateur photographer and having taken pictures of the annular eclipse last year, this video got me all giddy. I love the passion that you put in your videos and the simple explanations. You follow a similar, if not the same philosophy that I do: if I can't explain it, I will find someone who is smarter than me who can. Why? Because it bears explaining so myself and others can understand it (better.) The moment I finished watching the video, I looked at my wife and said 'THAT is a picture I want to have. Whether Destin is selling it, for how much, or if he gives it away, I would love a copy of it. Signed if possible!" So Destin, I hope you read all your comments because today you gained another Patreon supporter. I've been a long time YouTube watching your channels, I love the videos, I love that you include your family in them, and I love that you keep things simple, no matter how complicated they are. Thank you!

Ash

Amazing image and story! Now we just need to organise a group tour to be able to join you in Iceland or Luxor, Egypt for the next one(s).

Cam Sròn Caimbeulach (CSC) Enterprises

I’m hoping metal prints.

Joshua Rouw

In anticipation of a large file, we can create a torrent file and distribute the load. I'm happy to help arrange it.

Daryl Styrk

Like everybody else. It would be great to have an opportunity to buy that print.

Irish Guy

Great video! It was like being there all over again!

Dennis McLaughlin

I would love a copy of that photo. Such an incredible thing to have on the wall and remind us of doing what you love and taking risks.

W. Andy Roche

Man that was beautiful & inspirational!

Nebbstar

Ditto! Would there be a way to order reprints from Indie Film lab with them licensing Destin's prints. I would like to purchase (and frame) 2 copies of the printouts for Dr. Telepun. I'd love to be able to purchase these prints from Destin and also support Indie Film labs if possible. Amazing work. My photos didn't come out nearly as nicely as these and my family really likes the work that's been done here!

JP Cruz

My first thought after seeing that photo was "I would love to buy a printout.". Thanks for the astounding video.

Demi

There are other hints that point to a satellite: * You have two of them, seemingly flying absolutely parallel, which would be very unlikely for bugs * The speed along its track looks very constant, which is also unlikely for a bug * Also, I would expect the light scatter to be less constant for a bug Are both of the satellites not in the database?

Stefan Schloesser

Exactly why I'm here too. Considering the price is per video too, well worth the money - I'll be sticking around.

Sam Walker

Pentax Digital Spotmeter. If you can find one modified by Zone VI, they have filters installed to compensate for the difference in sensitivity in different color bands. Unfortunately, Zone VI is no longer in operation.

John Wrobleski

I didn't realize that Destin's patreon was a per-video thing rather than per month and am annoyed that even while being a poor college student these last few years, I wasn't subscribed. Here fixing that now!

Johiah

I want a print of that shot! I signed up for this looking to get a chance to buy it, haha.

Joel Dixon

I love every single tiny benefit that I get as a Patreon member for Smarter Every Day. I don’t subscribe for all the stickers, baseballs and a hi-res image of an eclipse, but they are such a nice surprise when they arrive and are so special. Can’t wait to get your eclipse multiple exposure professionally printed and hung up in my office! 🇬🇧

Olie Bosley

I retired 22 years ago, so don’t know Jeff. It’s amazing that film is still hanging on.

Fred S

Hey Destin! Awesome photo. I love your passion and the way you let us be part of it. I got your stickers a few days ago. It was an unassuming envelope buried under a few other pieces of mail. I let out a squeak of joy when I realized what it was. Made my wife jump. :)

BabylonDreams

Not this trip, but I definitely have in the past

Tim S Root

First time Patreon, long time partaker of all things Smarter Every Day. Photo is absolutely amazing! Top notch work of art! I do have to say that my favorite part was watching your family participate. Such a great example of a family man! It really is such a great feeling to see your own kids participate in activities and learning experiences like this!

Kevin Milne

I teared up a bit when I saw it. Amazing

Eric Nguyen

Destin, I am in awe. Well done, very well done!

Chuck Vickers

Destin, thank you for everything you do for us!

Steves Web

Thank you!

Smarter Every Day

Beautiful work. Very well done on the multi.

MatteBush

Thank you so much!!

Smarter Every Day

I saw the eclipse from Tow, Texas. The clouds cleared up seconds before totality and stayed clear the entire eclipse. This video was amazing and brought back great memories. I some how wasn’t a patron of yours but I am now!

Joshua Rouw

You are an absolutely legend and inspiration. The last few years have been very challenging and this eclipse came in such a serendipitous way. I cannot thank you enough for your content surrounding this topic. Long time fan of your channel, you are a man after my own heart. Seeing your content with Gordon leading up to the eclipse was amazing and got me so excited for it, and really made it so impactful for me. To see this amazing video afterwards and showing Gordon the photo with his reaction has me crying with happiness. Thank you to you and your family and all who made this a reality and sharing it with us 🙏🙂

Anthony S

I think you're right that it's a satellite, but I don't understand what is lighting it. Is earthshine strong enough that your camera could pick up reflected earthshine?

John Rauser

Absolutely awesome Destin. Thank you. I’m still on high from seeing the Western Australia Eclipse in 2023. I rode my motorcycle across Australia covering 10,000km (6000mi) to see a 1 min totality and it was totally worth it!

Michael Bardorf

Great video. We went to see the eclipse too from California, you were right it is infectious, we want to fly to Europe to see the next one! Can't wait to see the upload.

Brian L

Gonna print it and frame it! Thank you Destin and EVERYONE involved in this! What a wild cool unbelievable image! TYTYTY!

Mark Lam

I subscribed just for this photo. Thanks Destin. Been watching for a decade at least.

Emerge Holographic

Can’t wait to get that photo printout!

Alex Bajer

Also, just sent you an email with an idea about the objects you captured! Let me know what you think.

Fred Matney

Thank you for doing what you do to keep the sciences interesting for the younger generations. You’ve figured out how to connect to them in their world of online everything!

Fred Matney

Just watched the video and that is the coolest photo I think I’ve ever seen! Super cool accomplishment!

Nicholas Sadler

I drove to Poplar Bluff, MO, from northern Wisconsin for the eclipse. Because of your previous video, I was prepared for a great eclipse experience. I cherish the photo of totality I got because of your efforts to share the knowledge. Thank you for the amazing videos.

Mike & Kate Miller

THAT IS AWESOME! thank you! FYI - I think your comment about how the light got eerie feeling was truly accurate. It was sunny and warm in southern IL but yet it didn"t feel "nice" anymore. I also used the solar eclipse app as well ( until it crashed right before shadow bands).

Deanna C

Hey Destin, just wanted to say thank you for all that you do, especially around the eclipse. I was fortunate enough to take an astronomy class in high school, where my teacher impressed on me the unparalled magic of eclipses. But it was your videos that helped me convince my friends and family in 2017 and this year to travel 450mi to catch them. I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything, there's truly nothing that compares. I would love to purchase a couple of these prints, eagerly looking out for them. <3

Evan Bunke

Was that f/11 at 1/125” all the way across? With the filter on for the partials, and the filter removed for totality?

Met Hasteen

Hi Destin, For those looking to try this "on the cheap", without spending mega bucks on a special camera... I was able to accomplish something similar (double, triple, or even more exposure) by pressing the rewind button on the bottom of the camera (the button used to disengage the manual winder so the film could be rolled back into the canister) while advancing the film lever on a manual-film-advancing (non built-in-auto-advancing-motor) camera. This had the effect of making my camera think the film was advanced, making it ready for the next shot... without the film actually advancing. This method I admit isn't perfect. If the film does move, even the slightest, during the advance, it will throw off the double (or more) exposure... But if you can practice many times beforehand, with the right camera (Mine was a Ricoh KR-10), it is doable. Giving this more thought, I suppose to make it more reliable, you could load the film into a 35mm camera, then use something like a "dark room bag" to open the camera and physically tape the film inside the camera to keep even the minute advances from happening... Just a thought... LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! - Jason

You can do pretty advanced historical searches if you dive into their Query Builder. This is the search for every TLE from April 8th. You can probably refine it to a smaller window and/or only show LEO sats but I am not an expert on how. https://www.space-track.org/basicspacedata/query/class/gp_history/CREATION_DATE/2024-04-08--2024-04-09/orderby/NORAD_CAT_ID,EPOCH/format/tle/emptyresult/show

Jason P Sheldon

Best of luck! I would love to offer help, but no idea where to start. Would be cool to have a BTS if you or someone can solve it!

Liam Brinton

What a great shot, and on film no less! As an avid film shooter, I used Kodak Gold and an old SLR for this year’s eclipse, but none of my shots are as cool as the one you got. Super cool!

Met Hasteen

Congrats on the incredible shot!! Can't wait to see it in print! This eclipse holds a bit of sentimental value since it was the first time I experienced totality.

Whit

We flew in to Dallas, and the weather looked terrible, so we planned to get up early in the morning to chase a hole in the clouds. We drove most of the way to where they shot this, driving through Oklahoma and then up into Arkansas finally catching clear skies just as the eclipse started close to Mena, AR. Fully worth it.

Masterwork Tools

I’m am so gonna be in the lookout for that file/print. It got me to a little bit of tears that you are willing to share this with us. I was able to capture the eclipse on my camera up here in Ohio and it was one of the best experiences to ever witness!

Joseph Russell

I couldn't possibly love this post any more than anyone else. I'm looking forward to the photo.

Duke Lakewood

Please make this the next Patreon sticker. Looking forward to downloading the full res image

jahr

I would pay real money for a proper analog photographic print of that photo the way you did the scan+print. A nice meter-wide by 20cm strip print or something to hang above the door to my home office near some of my other astro artwork.

Anonymous Freak

Went to Georgetown TX for the eclipse and stayed at a friends house. Who’s dad is a BIG fan of SED, so this poster is gonna be an amazing gift for him.

Jonathan Boring

What a great shot! I'm impressed by your patience and dedication.

Mary Wolfe

Thanks Mathieu!

Smarter Every Day

Absolutely man I’m gonna give it to everybody that supports on here! I’ll give the digital to everyone and you can print it however you want, but I will also set up a way to order a print.

Smarter Every Day

I have not quite figured this out, but I will work on it

Smarter Every Day

Incoming in a couple of days!

Smarter Every Day

Thank you for jumping on board, Rebecca!

Smarter Every Day

Thanks Jason!

Smarter Every Day

Yes, I started trying to figure it out. It takes a long time to wrestle the data!

Smarter Every Day

As best as I can tell looking at in-the-sky.org the only satellite in the area was GPS 6

RYAN INGOGLIA

I’m super pumped to hear that thank you for supporting!

Smarter Every Day

Does it take into account where the satellite was on that particular date? Basically does it keep the TLEs for every date?

Smarter Every Day

Awesome! You should have it in a couple of days!

Smarter Every Day

Awesome!! did you eat at that Dairy Queen?

Smarter Every Day

It will be here for you in a couple of days

Smarter Every Day

It’s a pretty awesome machine. What kind of Light Meter do you use? I just recently started using one on my phone.

Smarter Every Day

Thank you for the kind words Mike. I really like hearing about families who watch the videos together. It’s so fun.

Smarter Every Day

I certainly feel like Gordon is my teacher on this topic!

Smarter Every Day

Your 2017 eclipse shot inspired me to catch this one in Hot Springs Arkansas. My dad was a solar physicist for NOAA so I did my own photo experiment with his old broken Canon F1 and AE1. They're terribly distorted but satisfying... I can use them to diagnose and fix them someday. Thanks for the best experience of my life!

Lora Donnelly

Check here in a couple of days it’ll be here for you!

Smarter Every Day

I really appreciate the kind words. It was an absolute joy.

Smarter Every Day

I feel like it is as well.

Smarter Every Day

Thank you very much for jumping on Patreon! I’m grateful! Look for info on the photo coming in the next few days.

Smarter Every Day

Sometimes living in the moment is the the best way to do it!

Smarter Every Day

My first eclipse in 2017 blew my mind.

Smarter Every Day

Thank you for saying nice things!

Smarter Every Day

It’s so cool!

Smarter Every Day

I think you can send a direct message on here somehow. MK helps me with messages so she will make sure I get to see it!

Smarter Every Day

Glad to support. By the way, do I need to ask for a copy of the picture or will it be available generically soon?

Ralph Woodard

What an awesome memory Mike.

Smarter Every Day

Absolutely! I will package it up in the next couple of days!

Smarter Every Day

It was a super awesome experience. Thank you for making it possible through your support Warren!

Smarter Every Day

Be on the lookout for the post in the next couple of days! It’s a really big file!

Smarter Every Day

Thank you for so much for supporting as a patron Henry. Your support allowed me to purchase RZ67 camera to take the shot!

Smarter Every Day

So glad you did it!

Smarter Every Day

Great idea!

Smarter Every Day

Do you work with Jeff?

Smarter Every Day

Yes, I considered using the film release button on the bottom, but my understanding is sometimes that could lightly shipped the film. There is a particular Nikon model that has a little lever for multi shot exposure but I don’t remember which model it is. Was it the F2?

Smarter Every Day

Thank you Ralph! I appreciate your support!

Smarter Every Day

That photo is absolutely beautiful and, frankly, having that on your wall would be a status symbol that would put an original Picasso to shame

Seamus Campbell

Thanks Pat O!

Smarter Every Day

I’m glad you saw it!

Smarter Every Day

Ooohh neat!

Smarter Every Day

Jase is awesome!!

Smarter Every Day

That was awesome! Thanks Destin!

Reflections Vapor

Probably the coolest one I’ve ever taken!

Smarter Every Day

This is one of the coolest photos I’ve ever seen…

LilyFox

Ive been patiently waiting for a SED eclipse video as I suffered the same fate over in Skaneatleles. A few brief glimpses of partial eclipse, and fully clouded out for totality. At least we get to see it through Destin's eyes.

Gregory Williams

Such an awesome photo of the eclipse on film. It reminds me of this photo of a lunar eclipse that was captured on film. https://www.jasondefreitas.com/astro/p/eclipse

Andrew Fordyce

Could I get a copy too??

Pete

As an "OLD SCHOOL" film photographer it was a pleasure to see the application of contemporary knowledge and old school tools to contemporary problem solving. I have in my portfolio numerous examples of time-lapse single frame photography. As a PS for future reference there are a couple of what used to be high end NIKON cameras that we could do this with in addition to the Mamyia you used. It was a good choice because it was medium format whereas the NIKON would have been 35mm. I am surprised though that either no one gave you the option or you ruled out the option of a digital back for the Mamiya, or a Hasselblad that would have created the same image with the same shooting sequence.

Steven Kershaw

I have to admit that I have been unimpressed with an eclipse. I've "seen" several partials, but never a total. This year's eclipse was sorta cool in a way. I fell to peer pressure and built a little view box for my coworkers and we took it outside and looked as the "projection" in the box. Then I went back to work. Watching this video, I can't quite describe the emotion that I felt reflected as you described your excitement... geeking out if you will. Truth is that hearing your story on the trip, the suspense of getting the shot and the whole family getting involved was somehow more engaging for me. Oh, by the way. You're description of the light feeling "icky".... you put the word to the exact feeling I had that day, but just couldn't say it. Thank you.

b1pig

Sounds like the perfect next sticker idea! Great job Destin!

Matt Larson

That was fun!! Thank you for sharing it with us Destin.

David Glover

I saw it in person at your urging. It was so worth it. I did not have the equipment or skills to take a proper photo so I just lived in the moment. I’m excited to buy prints from you as memories and to convey it to others better than words can.

EpicWolverine

Awesome video and thanks for sharing your passion for getting Smarter Every Day.

Daniel Turner

Can't wait to see the high res photos!!

Roman Calderon

Appreciate you

pat o.

The enthusiasm here is making me teary-eyed. So happy to be along for the ride, Destin. Thank you!

Jeanine McCarthy

Wow what a crazy and bold shot you pulled off! I got into eclipses because your 2019 video, and I also got into film photography because of your Kodak videos. I can’t wait for the photo! I would love to buy large prints if you’re planning to do that!

Gordon

Words cant say how exited I am to get4 this photo, Im going to frame it and hang it up in my room. Good work to everyone involved In making this happen!

Bradley Schiesser

My 14 year old squealed when he heard we might have the picture. This was one of our favorite memories of this spring.

Lisa Marie Fuqua

Well, Destin, I have no idea if that was a satellite or not, but if you watch the Secrets of Skinwalker Ranch, then that has to be a UAP as Travis says. Other than that who knows. I will continue to support your causes.

Ralph Woodard

Can't wait to get this photo! Well done!

Dan

The eclipse was a unfortunately rare "family day" for us. My girls are all in their 20's now, and they have their own things going on. I'm so grateful that you are going to sharee that amazing photo with us. Thank you!

David Macauley

That's a Nikon F...not a FS...

John White

Dustin, when I was in college years ago I really got into photography. Had my own darkroom, rolled my own film, etc. did stuff like your time lapse several times. My cameras were Nikon FS. I could pull the film rewind release and the film stayed put so I could recock the shutter without moving the film along. Used a shutter release to trip the shutter there fore very little shaking of the camera. Wish I could have been there when you were getting started to have given you some ideas.. John

John White

32 years as a Kodak sensitizing dye chemist. Proud and happy that you did this. Wonderful job on the photo but even more sharing the enthusiasm of all involved. By the way it was cloudy here in Rochester. :-(

Fred S

We need a sticker of the eclipse phases!!

Jonathan Boring

Soo unbelievable. Have this on my bucket list, but couldn't come around watching one myself so far. Germany won't have one for a long long time. So I'd need to travel a bit. :D Btw. Thanks for the great stickers again!

Dominik Elfein

We all want 😁

Mathieu Goulet

So excited for this image! Thank you again for providing the inspiration to get me to drive 9 hours away to see this incredible event!

Not A Clever Man

What a lovely video, it just epitomises why I'm a patron. Your warmth and enthusiasm are completely infectious, my wife and I watched it together and we were both smiling the whole time. And what an incredible shot - looking forward to the print!

Henry Kenyon

Inspirational.

Simon York

I am so excited to buy a print. As a huge film and space nerd I'm so impressed with the shot. Well done!

Lesa Giesbrecht

dude. this got me teary eyed. Your enthusiasm for learning, your drive to try new things, you're sharing your journey with the world is what we need now more than ever. Bringing everyone together with science. I salute you!

Warren Spiker

Amazing

Vincent

Awesome video and I am definitely going to get a big print of that image.

Matt Lindley

Can't wait to get a print

Simon Priisholm

I'm looking forward to printing it out. We were in an unfortunate part of Texas but were able to catch a couple of brief views under heavy cloud cover.

Daryl Styrk

Wow! Looks amazing man! I am so happy that I got to take my two kids to see their first solar eclipse.

Mike H.

Destin, thank you for encouraging people to go see this event. I was a few miles away at the Historic Bollinger Mill for my first solar eclipse. It was amazing. I want to share a photo with you, I'm a supporter on Patreon, but I didn't see a way to send a photo. Let me know how I can do that (or let me know if you're not interested) Thanks again for all the work you do producing these videos.

Mike and Sonja Connell

Mate that photo is EPIC!!!!!

Aaron Cheeseman

Amazing! Hope it will be possible to send to Europe aswell without completely breaking the bank. 🤞

Martin Gyllencreutz

That was a treat. I got to visit my friends a few hours away in Culver, OR, for totality during the 2017 eclipse. Was not prepared for the impact of that experience, but was able to share it with my wife and kids, and that was awesome. Thank you for all that you do, Destin!

Jed Ralls

Nice I was in Dayton too! watched it from the airforce museum. Didn't get any great photos but didn't really try either.

ShadeByTheSea

That was all kinds of awesome. Destin you are one of my favorite humans.

Kn1nJa

Thank you 🙏🏼 very much!! That was a big bucket list of mine and I flew all the way from Orlando to Dayton, Ohio and got to see a beautiful picture of it and your doctor Friend’s app on my iPhone worked out great walked me through the whole process. It was such a joy to see it, and it was so emotionally overwhelming.

Jim Fox

Long time viewer of your content and have been meaning to become a patron for awhile and now I have the means of doing it!! looking forwards to the info on the print of your Eclipse photo. This one was my first eclipse and I know my wife and I would love to have your picture hanging in our office!

Corey Lux

Hi Destin, I bet it's a satelite, no bug will ever fly in such a straight line and constant speed, let alone twice :-) Love your spirit and enthousiasm and the great guys you give such a big spotlight in your videos, Cheers!

Bas

I just kept smiling throughout the complete video. I truly enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing this.

cep

You convinced me that it was worth traveling to see the eclipse. I have to say that it was completely worth it. Your heart and curiosity are infectious. Thank you for sharing with us. Interested people are truly interesting.

John M Sweeney

"You already printed it. You wild man" that was an amazing reaction and made me smile. It's people like him who gets students interested in their subject. I loved this video ♥️

blendertom

This is why i'm still a Patreon after all these years (2019?), nothing beats the way you and your colleagues and friends can inspire people with your purest form of passion. Im watching this with my wife who is not technical, doesnt know much about space or spaceflight, and she is smiling ear to ear, thats what you accomplish with your videos. Cant wait to show your content to my daughter in a few years..

Mike Franke

Me too man.

Smarter Every Day

I'll have info probably tomorrow on that.

Smarter Every Day

I'd love to buy a copy and/or print.

Brett Davison

The Mamiya RZ67 has been my "go to" camera since 1986. I look forwward to the special post

John Wrobleski

Me too. I'd love to give it to my father in law. That was basically the same thing we watched from his back yard

Tim S Root

Excited!!

Mika

As the crow flies, we were within 2 miles of each other during the eclipse!

Tim S Root

I’ve had your old composite eclipse photo as my computer wallpaper for years. It’s cool to see a new one!

Austin Burnham

See if you can get an account at https://www.space-track.org , they maintain the official unclassified, public DOD satellite catalog. Shouldn't be too hard to get an account and figure out which sat it was as long as it's not classified. Most of the catalog is publicly available.

Jason P Sheldon

I took my family to rural Vermont to see the eclipse this year and it was truly an amazing event. This is exactly the kind of print I’d love to get to commemorate our trip. Thank you Destin!

Joseph Fillion

congrats on the epic shot! My guess for the 2 objects are satellites from the recent SpaceX rideshare mission that launched on the 7th (11 satellites launched). Would explain why they are going in the same direction, but slightly different spacing as opposed to in a line like a starlink train. No idea which of the satellites they could be though unfortunately. No idea how to verify this unfortunately.

Liam Brinton

Thanks for sharing Destin - this is fabulous. You are rocking it!

Jason Hagenow

Haha I believe you! Can't wait

Matti Loimaranta

I'll send you a digital copy ASAP. Gotta figure out a distribution method, the file is HUGE!

Smarter Every Day

New to Patreon! So happy to be here—love the work you’re doing.

Rebecca

This was so great! Can't lie, I got quite emotional watching everyone have such a great time and all the reactions to the many great things! Thank you so much!

Dale McDonald

That was an amazing photo, I truly look forward to that post. Keep up the great work!

matthew s arnold

I’d love to purchase a large print!!

Justin Carvacho

I loved the video. I had an awesome adventure with friends to see the eclipse. We started out headed to Texas and ended up in Arkansas. I love your picture too. Great job!!!

Shawn Johnson

Great video! Thanks for sharing the picture! I got to see the eclipse with my family and this picture will be a great memory for us.

Kenzie

Great video!

marcel mušič

That's definitely a satellite. There are so many of them flying around it has to be one. P.S. Awesome that we can get a copy of the film photo, it was stunning!

Matti Loimaranta

Thanks Destin 🙏🏻
