How a Nuclear Submarine Punches Through Arctic Ice (Final Deep Dive Video)

Here it is.  The finale of the Nuclear submarine deep dive.  I know this is a 42 minute video... but man is was stuff fascinating.

The Nuclear Submarine Deep Dive has been incredibly amazing, and I'm grateful to have been given such an incredible opportunity. Thank you for giving me your time and allocating some of your precious time to learn this stuff with me.

I feel very blessed to have had these videos to work on during the pandemic.  Thank you so much for supporting this little video project of mine on Patreon.

 I'm extremely grateful.

How a Nuclear Submarine Punches Through Arctic Ice (Final Deep Dive Video)

This has been a great series. Have enjoyed it a lot. I've been on naval ships before. But, never a sub. Which brings up a question. I know everything is designed to maximize space, minimize overall volume of the craft, etc. But, how did you feel inside with all the crew members? Did you always have a cramped feeling? I'm 6'4" in my bare feet and have a football players build (OK retired football player :-) ) who also gets bouts of claustrophobia in certain situations. I was wondering if some of the common areas were as tight as they looked in the video or were actually a bit bigger.

Just got a chance to watch this finally. This series was pretty awesome. Thanks for making it.

This nuclear submarine deep dive series was seriously awesome. The Navy was so generous with the access they granted you, and you took full advantage and hit out of the park. Well done!

Just curious about the navigation part: The rudder operator looks at headings, but does that really work when it's that close to the pole? I can understand it when traveling above the ice, but the guy steering the boat has no other reference then the dials

Destin, this video and your excitement to learn made me smile so much! And I didn't even know I was smiling that big! Wow what a trip with thrills, chills and spills.

Myra Badger

Hi Destin when will the video be captioned? Thanks

I wish captions were available. The video was very interesting but I needed help to understand that captain when he was commanding the ascent.

Very nice series…a great bunch of professionals (behind and in front of the camera)!

Was your ionizing radiation count really 00.000 REM? Weird leading zero. Of course, all the water protected you from the bulk of radiation when submerged. :D

Maarten Daalder

I just saw this video and I wanted to say it is a pleasure to be here.

Brendan Upton

What is the environmental impact (cost) of breaking the ice in a sensitive ecosystem like this one?

Lior Singer

Simply amazing. Thank you. And the last one was probably the best one. Certainly the most exciting one. You could see the tension, and yes I think there was some tension, in everyone's face. Take the captain. What an awesome responsibility, but he trusted his subordinates to do their jobs. Let's face it, they would never become competent to advance if it were not for a captain willing to provide oversight, but not start barking commands. Good job by you, Destin, but we can recognize that the true stars were the Navy personnel. One thing. I thought submarines were referred to as "boats" and yet they often used the term "ship". I'm sure there is an explanation. Thanks again, and ciao.

Loved this series...had an uncle that was "WEPS" on nuclear submarines for nearly 20 years.

Edward Burton

Thank you so much for this series! It's been amazing!

Yes THAT Tonya

I became a patron at the start of this series and every video blew me away. Thank you Destin for making something so special!

What an amazing video series. Thanks so much for taking us along!

Awesome Video, Destin! Thank you for your hard work and your transparency as to how this series came to be! You keep making me curious about topics I never even would have thought about otherwise and I really appreciate that.

Jonas Wahlen

Thank you so much for your work Destin. You really do inspire many to be even 1% smarter with every video, post, tweet.

Super-interesting content, Destin. Thanks for all your hard work in putting this series together.

Fabulous series Destin. I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. What a great opportunity you have had.

This was probably the best series by any creator or company on any platform. What an amazing job done by Destin and thanks to the Navy for letting this happen!

Jason Williamson

Your comment about the hoop stress had me chuckling. I've had a similar thought walking around a reactor at-power. "There's a lot going on not that far away from me" lol. Thanks for all the great content.

Destin: Please explain to us what a roll of toilet paper was doing in the overhead of the torpedo room!

Leverett H

This was so cool, literaly I'm almost in tears at the end of this last video. Thank you for this.

This was an incredible series Destin. Definitely on par with the how a helicopter works, which was my intro to the channel, but with maximum effort and the production quality was fabulous. Huge thanks to the U.S. Navy for all they do!!!

This was so fascinating, I'm sorry to see it end. Thanks again, Destin!

Steven Payne

This is perhaps the most exciting video I've seen anywhere. Truly incredible how much access you were provided, and just amazing learning about the operation of a modern submarine. Thanks so much for sharing!

Sean Tyson

Wow! Just Wow! Well done, Destin! So many things to learn. So many things to think about. And it all has to go like clockwork, even on YOUR side! Thank You, Destin! This series is quite spectacular!

Terry Moore

I loved this series and Thunder Below. Thanks for what you do!

Kevin Thomas

@Logan. Agreed πŸ‘ While was in the back pushing, this series shows somethings that are typically not covered like how we would be ready to fight a fire. @Destin Thank you for a very good channel that I enjoy watching.

Bill Ward

Thank you Destin for this awesome series, I never missed a video and I'm kinda sad for this series coming to an end. But you always come with new fresh ideas that genuinly make me think outside the box and being intrested in anything that I can get my hands on. Again, thank you so much for this videos. Cheers!

Awesome series! I’ve said it before but it’s very neat to show my family what it’s like to be underway on a 688 submarine. They now have some insight on what my time on the USS Bremerton was like. Thank you for the content!

Thanks so much for your hard work Destin! It seems like everyone you encountered really appreciated what you were doing, good attitude all around. BTW I'm still hunting for those high resolution vortex ring pictures, can someone help?
