How to Poop on a US NAVY NUCLEAR SUBMARINE - Smarter Every Day 256

New Video!  There were several obvious questions that I wanted to know the answers to... but they didn't really justify an entire video.  I decided to roll them up all up into this which is the next-to-last video in the submarine series.  Thank you so much for supporting this series!

Also, please tell your Mother I said Happy Mother's Day!  Mothers are the absolute best!

Regards,

Destin

How to Poop on a US NAVY NUCLEAR SUBMARINE - Smarter Every Day 256

Comments

Hey... do you think the Navy would be down for a demonstration of the railgun?

Jordan Tomkinson

I really didn’t know how there could be rules unified across the Navy. When I did my time on Navy subs, the game of choice was Pinochle. And from what I understand, that game was Navy-unique since it was double deck and four players. So it was possible for one player to be dealt 16 aces as happened to me on April 7, 1977 at the Prestwick International Airport. It was 500 points to win the game and my hand was worth 1000 just for the aces.

Nice to see Cribbage being played - the king of card games. Does each boat have different rule variations, such as some play the Muggins rule, or are the rules unified across the Navy?

Paul Dickerson

I’m enjoying your trip down memory lane. I did my military time as a Navy nuke. I enlisted in 1972 to avoid the draft then spent 8.5 years in the nuclear Navy. I was on two FBMs, both operated out of Holy Loch Scotland. Except for one time crossing the equator, all my patrols were in the North Atlantic including under the ice. There were times when the injection temperature was close to 28°F. You didn’t talk about that. Communication with our spouses was via a “family gram”, each crew member getting up to 6 per patrol. They were limited to 20 words with the first being my name and the last being theirs. Some were pretty imaginative: “Decorating the tree. Miss your hanging balls.“ That experience led to a career in the commercial nuclear power industry. Keep up the good work.

Great series Destin! Hey, by the way, what are you reading these days? Read both your recommendations: Thunder Below and the Martian. Loved both. Clearly, you are tuned in to what I like. What's next?

Very cool; thanks.

Mrgunsngear

Aircraft carriers should be next series.

Edward Burton

Was that just the lock screen on your phone when you were going to bed? I saw sciencey stuff. Can't wait for the resurfacing video

So... Destin dropped a 'bomb' on a nuclear sub. How ironic

Noah Jamieson

Three cheers for NUKE POOP!! Where’s the high-speed when you need to capture the Coriolis dynamics of the Arctic Flush?

Mike O'Dell

Random thought, do any submarines use bidets to reduce paper usage and keep things a little easier for the pipes?

Jonathan Bates

Destin, I’m an active U.S. submariner. I truly appreciate you making the deep dive series. I can now show my family what it was like being on a 688 class submarine (USS Bremerton SSN-698). I have followed your channel for many years and it was a shock to me that this opportunity was made available to you…nobody better in my opinion. Keep up the good work and than you for the amazing content.

I’ve been on board the Russian submarine in Hamburg - it was amazing that I didn’t bash my noggin to oblivion getting through the hatches.

Destin, what a fun and informative series. Thank you. As an aside, I'm surprised the CO and XO are berthed so close together. In the event of severe damage at that location, it'd take them both out. Perhaps they're rarely both there at the same time.

Hey Justin Thanks for a great series on Submarines. I love the videos you made. Also all the other videos. ex supersonic baseball cannon. I always learn something when I watch a video from you. and a small smile on my face. Regards René from Denmark p.s. thanks for baseball

thanks for giving us this glimpse into life on a sub, and introducing us to the great crew members! It makes me appreciate my military service on an air base all that much more! :)

Steve Kurt

Great series. Thanks so much. I read a story where a German submarine sank because of using the toilet wrong.

David Goodridge

This is such a great series. I’m sure the navy screeners had a kick out of this. It’s fitting that this release is in conjunction with Mother’s Day, as moms have had to deal with a lot of crap throughout the years 🤣.

David Vinson

The whole of your channel has lead up to this moment. Congratulations and well done, Sir.
