We went on a little mental adventure involving worms.

The MAGNETIC WORM MYSTERY - Smarter Every Day 253

Comments

Worms ingest dirt and when there is ferrous oxide, or in your case iron filings, in the dirt that material in their intestines is magnetic. Still, fascinating that it was enough to be attracted to a magnet so clearly.

Thank you, but large corporate shops broke my soul lol The only ones I'd work for now would be space x or nasa...

Uhhh... not what I expected to learn today, but thank you! That was AMAZING!

Icicle C Cold

Try a rare-earth magnet. It might suck up worms deep underground.

Rick Gonzales

Maybe the dirt in that it eats or the dirt it was found in has a high concentration of iron in it.

Hearing Destin say β€œwhat’s happening?” in an angry albeit inquisitive tone absolutely made my day!

Good job!!! magic and amazing!

Rebecca

Awesome job Destin. I have a slightly different theory. The worms have a mucus on its body to help it stay moist. Rather than ingesting the iron particles, the particles may well be stuck to this mucus. In the name of science I think you should wash the worms first and see if that removes the magnetic properties. Love the unedited and unscripted video. Keep up the great work.

I loved the sillyness of just exploring stuff in this video, reminds me of my buddy and I going detail crazy over something we've only found out 5 minutes ago and theorizing how it works and then going and finding out how it actually works and see how close we got!

Can you form your own company that needs things welded so I can flee NY and come work for competent people? Is that too much to ask? I know lots of things about welding and I know a bit about stuff that isn't welding and I don't eat much and I'll be quiet (except about quality...) Also, please do more random videos like this, especially when some random phenomenon makes you mad. - Clif, the defeated by corporate management welder...

2 boys from Alabama, playing with worms. LOL Excellent video Dustin!

With a little effort, some liquid nitrogen and high-temperature superconductors you might even make a worm fly.

Great video Destin! I sent you a direct message I was hoping you could get a chance to answer it.

James

I'm so glad you thought to film this.

Robert Sanges

Destin, you should feed your chickens next to the same steel dust and see if they become chick magnets!

Destin, I'm sure you've read studies that worms have the ability to tell up from down by sensing the Earth's magnetic field. Link: https://www.upi.com/Science_News/2015/06/18/Worms-have-an-electromagnetic-sensor-in-their-brain/2841434637908/

Survival trick: use a magnetic worm as a compass :D

Thats nuts magnetic worms🀣🀣🀣🀣

Aaron Cheeseman

To be ferr, the video would've been less interesting if they explained it in the beginning.

This was the most ironic conclusion I could have expected!

Brandon Smith

Whoa. How exactly do you check it? Do you have IFTTT ping you or something?

Smarter Every Day

Is there extra content here that's not on YouTube? I got here from an email saying there was a patron-only video but all I see is the YT video. Not mad or anything, I just want to make sure I'm not missing any content!

This actually is a big deal! Expect a direct message. More often than not this has to do with an error with how the mailing address was entered.

Smarter Every Day

Thank you!

That was my file name for this video

Hi Destin, I really like your Web 1.0 approach ;-) There is another way to get around the bloody YouTube algorythm: YouTube (still) generates a feed for every channel! You can access it with (mostly) every Feed reader (I use Reeder or NetNewsWire). The feed can be fount at https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=[CHANNELID]. So for SmarterEveryDay that is: https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=UC8VkNBOwvsTlFjoSnNSMmxw

Hi - will there be captioning forthcoming? Thanks

Hey Destin.. are you still working on a backlog of baseballs? Just curious because I was a patreon supporter from before you started it, and haven't received one.. It's not a big deal, but I would love to proudly display it!! I'm sad the Frederick Keys (Maryland) aren't in the same league as the Trash Pandas.. was hoping to see them play.. :-)

Steve Jones

Awesome discovery! I see Destin's next thing will be something like "ancestry.com" for worms, where you can track what part of the yard a worm came from by how much iron is in it.. I can't help but feel a little bad for the worm, seeing as though he just went through the equivalent of being put through an MRI machine with a metal hip, but I guess it beats getting eaten by a catfish. :-)

Steve Jones

This is wrong. Why are they eating the steel dust?

Asdfghjkl Qwertyuiop

The email list seems like a useful workaround.

Barmp

What’s going to happen after he makes legit SED 253252? πŸ˜‚

Jason Williamson

So many more questions! Excellent discovery

Awesome video! The real question is which worm catches fish better? Magnetic worm or nonmagnetic worm?

That was super cool. What a fun discovery. Love what you do. I'm on your email list. Thanks man. Your awesome!

Tony Anschutz

So then. When does the movie Iron Worm come out?

KC

Snatch block magnetic worm mystery. Every video I see now. I add snatch block to it. I feel like I get more pull out of it.

Is that enough iron in their blood? to do that! Oh Ok that might be what they consumed, but will they extrude the extra of what they need?

John E. Coughlan

Hey Destin. I love supporting your videos.... but Patreon is making it very hard to do. They keep making me go through a cloudflare step despite me being signed up for 2FA. Their response is "There's nothing we can do, it's our web host". and that seems like a load of crap to me. So, can you either post direct links to the youtube videos or have them fix the problem with their webhost? Thank you! I love your work, and want to continue to support it, but I really can't if they keep making it such a pain in the butt.

Nate D

That was delightful! Thanks Destin!

When your day gets completely sidetracked by a worm and a magnet.

Thanks Destin!

I'd subscribe πŸ˜†

Ferrous Worm would be an awesome band name. :)

I really enjoy all your videos, but these spontaneous unscripted ones are on a different level. Thanks!

That is an alien, not a worm dustin......
