I like the general theme, that really looks like the source material. But keep the weapon loadout simple. A weapon can have multiple attack profiles (e.g. a dispersed or a concentrated shot for a energy weapon. Or a blast attack or armor piercing attack for a tank turret). The loader looks very nice. I was always a fan of the infantry dudes and liked seeing a driver or a loader, it gives a model a huge amount of character. But thats just my two cents, please keep us updated, every post is appreciated.

Appreciate the feedback! These designs were more to feel out what the community likes/dislikes, not so much locking us in to any specific requirements. We are definitely going to look at doing some cleanup on vehicles as that seems to be the common theme of feedback.

I noticed that each vehicle is equipped with at least three different weapons. Was this done with the intent of having at least three different attacks for each vehicle? Don't be afraid of having multiple attacks from the same weapon. It isn't lazy to do that (old BN did it all the time, sometimes with the same animation) and I personally think having less weapons on the models would clean them up a bit and return some of their symmetry.

We will definitely look towards more symmetry going forward. Really appreciate your analysis and feedback on this!

Really appreciate the super detailed response! We're still getting the hang of the style we are going for so having feedback like this is extremely helpful! Thank you again :)

My main reason for them for them being outlandish is due to a lack of, how should I put this? Cleaness? What I mean is; many real life military vehicles (and also the ones in Battle Nations) is that they have a "clean" design. Sure they looked over the top, dirty, weird and pointy, but the design was clean. Everything looked like it was where it should've been. These ones look to much like they were "thrown togeather", not "designed". I'm not saying you did just throw them togeather! Obviously a lot of effort went into this, I'm talking in a in lore sense. It's why I had the Mad Max comparason. They have the air of something creating in the post apocalypse. with all the bits and pieces that could be found straped on. Real life military equipment are designed in a way that looks clean and mostly tidy. Also, if they are mobile artillary, they have several issues: Real life artillary wouldn't have a plow, the military would just use bulldozers. The plow also has spikes, that makes it seem more like it's anti-personal rather than earthworks. Artillary swould never need that, since they are always located far away from the battle. Quad-track vehicles, while they look cool, don't actually have any better advantage to dual-track vehicles. In fact, the only thing they have is the disadvantage of higher maintenence times and costs. And finally: They all seem to have non-moving side mounted guns. In real life, they wouldn't put on a gun that can only be fired on one direction which is dictated entirely by the vehicles postion. Even WW2 Tank Destroyers had a little turret movement. If a gun really need to be there, there would instead just be a gun port. I wanted to let you know that all this is coming from a place of love! I think it's awesome that your taking Battle Nations in your own direction. I know all I've done so far is be critical, but I wouldn't be doing that if I didn't care. You lot are doing and have done an amazing job! And you will have my support through out it all! :)

Ah, so they’re supposed to be artillery vehicles/concepts then. Gotcha. Now that I know they’re supposed to be artillery and not tanks, that helps a bit. With this I mind, the concepts do retain some of the “absurd” elements that I spoke about. The middle vehicle having two artillery cannons strapped together gives me that “absurd” feel: Not gimmicky, just a little over the top in terms of firepower (reminds me of the super tank from BN), though the radio on the side seems a bit odd personally. The entire concept of the 3rd vehicle seems pretty absurd, and funny, in hindsight since I now know it’s supposed to essentially be an artillery “buggy” (a doom buggy, if you will). The first vehicle doesn’t give off much of an absurd look to it aside from the massive pair of rocket launchers on the vehicle. Also, I think I know what might also be contributing to the “outlandish” look to the vehicles, they’re all asymmetric. BN had its fair share of asymmetric designs, however the vehicles mostly maintain a symmetrical design that gives them, even the ones with more “absurd” features, a more “realistic” appearance.

As replied to Finlay, I think we might’ve framed this wrong. With that in mind, do they still feel as absurd? If so, which parts? Again really appreciate all the feedback being provided!

One other question, I think we framed our post wrong here. These aren’t so much tanks, rather they’re more concepts for artillery vehicles. With that in mind, does that change the outlandish feeling for them?

Battle Nations Group

I agree with Finlay to an extent. There’s an element of absurdity to most of BN’s original units, from the tanks to the troopers, and animal units as well. For example, the "portable wall." A concrete block on tank treads is absurd, but it could technically function as a military tool. But absurd doesn’t mean impractical or impossible. The tanks in BN are, as Finlay said, theoretically possible and could potentially pass as a real-life tanks. These concepts, while they look cool, don’t capture that same feasibility or utility that the original units had, especially if they’re meant to be tanks. I am glad to see a great deal of detail being put into each unit though, so I am excited to see what else is in store for the art of this game.

Hey Finlay, appreciate the honest feedback! Could you detail what aspects made them feel outlandish? We have some ideas of what they might be but we don’t want to make any assumptions.

Battle Nations Group

Feedback: I personally think they look too outlandish. While the original tanks were over the top, they were based on and followed the rules of real life tanks. So while they were silly, they could theoretically be real tanks. These ones don’t feel like they could be real at all. Remember; while you are making a game with ridiculous military equipment, it still should seem like and feel something like that of a military, not Mad Max. That’s just my two cents.
