The podcast is probably my favourite part of Noclip, of course the docs are amazing, but the consistent and not completely covered in ads coverage of gaming is such a fantastic thing to listen to weekly.

I understand what you were getting at about the cost of the podcast but to speak on that product's behalf: I'm busy AF most of the time and a lower-commitment product like the Noclip Crewcast is perfect for me to watch/listen to in parts. It is also my primary means of discovering indies-- i understand the crew's tastes over all these episodes and trust their suggestions. It's the only gaming podcast I consume regularly. I actually tend to watch it before Noclip's docs because I want to sit and commit a solid block of time to watch the docs, but I can chop up a podcast into bits. That doesn't address the whole time/money cost problem, though. If a Patreon incentive popped up tied to the podcast, I'd support it. Things cost money and I get that. Either way, I'll be sticking around. I appreciate the work you and the team put into everything here. Much ❤️

Just had a thought leading on from the idea of splitting the Dwarf Fortress into episodes. Something else you could do with this is use the episodes as part of the Patreon push by giving us early releases and mentioning that at the end of the episode that the next episode is on Patreon.

Personally, the walled garden model of the internet is increasing again, and trying to funnel people to Patreon is obviously down to presentation, but increasingly that fostering of community inside of a space that is safe from a lot of Twitter bullshit + google nonsense + the death of big public institutions seems like the only sustainable (and ethical) way of doing things. I think you're absolutely smashing it, and your work is important and of such high quality. Trying new things is always scary because obviously you don't want to overextend yourself into something that doesn't work out - but perhaps there's ways of dipping just enough of a toe in until you see something really stick with people who are outside of the Patreon. Looking forward to everything that's going to come out this year, I know a lot of people who are very excited about your upcoming projects and I'll shill for ya as much as I can.

Emily Mitchell

In the “Lessons from 2024” bit there’s a lot of talk about doing better, I think at the beginning of the new year it’s a good time to hear that you’re already doing amazingly well. You’re smashing it, folks; from the outside it seems like one hell of a year for Noclip. I imagine it would be difficult to organically work in to each video that you have a Patreon, but it would be a good way of getting the word out without having to do a dedicated Patreon push.

John

Good point - but I guess that's why they're only daydreams :D - last year's biggest problem is we had 7 projects happen at the exact same time. So I need to be more disciplined in when we film. The good news is we have so much cool stuff in post production we're basically sorted for months in terms of filming.

Noclip

Love you guys but the daydreaming about single-handedly saving games journalism is worrisome to me. You're already overextended. Fewer (excellent) side projects you'll set aside when Secret Tape comes calling, more core content on a more regular cadence.

Michael Baker

I am nothing if not a jotter. Keep up the good work.

N.R. Jenzen-Jones

Thanks so much this is really helpful! I appreciate you taking the time to jot it all down.

Noclip

I think you guys are killing it, and I'm super excited for everything that's coming up. Keep on doing your best, that's all anyone can ever ask for. I personally love to watch anything that excites the person who's making it.

Feel I should leave a few comments here, as it has been a while. As ever, these are just expressing my personal opinions: 1. I love the ethos behind the documentaries. Please don’t feel compelled to go chasing drama in place of recording history. I also like the longer view you often take. That is to say, I am much more interested in games history than games journalism. 2. I liked your analogy of being ‘sent into the field’ by the community, and bringing back high-quality documentaries. I don’t feel like I need any more engagement beyond what is already in place, especially the patron show and your interaction in the comments/Discord. 3. I am very fond of the current podcast format, and would prefer not to hear interviews in place of the regular episodes. If these were additional episodes or otherwise distinct, like Dear Dwyery, I might listen when relevant to me. (FWIW, I thought Dear Dwyery could have been more focused and tightly edited, with more of your thoughts, à la your video essays). 4. I enjoyed the Quick Looks and other short-form Crew stuff, and the ethos of letting the team pick the topics and direction for those videos is appealing and should lead to some natural variety. 5. 20-minute history videos on topics that aren’t practical to cover in full-length docs sound fantastic to me. Again, I expect that selecting topics you are passionate about will lead to the best results for these, driven as they are by your pieces to camera. 6. Personally, I am not as interested in coverage of games journalism (and especially not of streamers) than I am of games and game developers. 7. I would recommend finding a volunteer research assistant (possibly a student from a local university who is studying a relevant discipline?) to help with digitising the Archive material. I know that conventional wisdom dictates you must constantly be evolving to survive, but I feel this ought to be tempered by confidence and pride in the value of the work you have done to date. I am certainly proud to support it.

N.R. Jenzen-Jones

Said this on the YouTube comments, but I'll say it again here. I would 100% be down with a no-developer interview, just Danny and team talking about the history of a game/developer for 20-30 minutes. The Gaming Historian took a (somewhat permanent) hiatus, and that's a gap that I've really missed. Also, I would love docs/shorts on video game coverage, I say go for it and see where it lands with the audience. It's close enough to game development that it wouldn't come out of left field.

Brian Marsh

So excited for both Dwarf Fortress doc and the Hades Blu-Ray! I feel like these are the two Noclip items that I've been (not so patiently) anticipating for ages.

Jonathan Beckham

Oh I'll ask them now, it is a region free disk so I'd hope it was available there. thanks for the heads up

Noclip

Thanks for the update!

Sokar

I see the Blu-ray is up on fangamer.com with the notify me, but not on the EU website. Do you have any info on if it's coming over here too?

Bavo Debraekeleer

Keep at it is right Danny! Looking forward to the docs. I've looked at Dwarf Fortress so many times - every time I talk myself out of buying it. And I'd love a follow up to FF14. That original docs is why I became a patron and I've never stopped.

Alxa

Quake 3 is mostly filmed so definitely. We need to reschedule UT99 but it’s still on our list for this year. Just got a lil backlog of editing before we hit them

Noclip

Not sure if I missed it, are there any news on the arena-fps docs? UT99 and Q3A, which both had their 25th anniversary last december? I guess they got pushed back due to the HL2 doc, but hopefully not fully cancled.
