2023-09-19 19:15:32 +0000 UTCInteresting local story about the early NHL series: EA actually released special Megadrive/Genesis versions of NHL 95 and 96 in Sweden called Elitserien 95 and 96. The game was the same, but the players, teams and league format, as well as the trophy and pre-match game analyst, were from the Swedish ice-hockey league. (In a realistic touch, even the rinks were slightly bigger than in North America.) The game was programmed by a 3-member studio called Neurostone who met through the vibrant Swedish demo scene of the time. It was created on the initiative of the Swedish branch of Sega who, in order to get a foot in the door at the Swedish hockey league, even bought an official sponsorship and branded the helmets of all the real-life teams with the Sega logo. All the team coaches (some very reluctantly) sent Excel sheets ranking the separate skills of all their own players, which Sega then had to try to balance out fairly. EA agreed to approve the project if they could count on 20,000 game orders (the Swedish install base for the Megadrive was around 60,000 at that time), so it was a big risk, but they ended up selling almost double that amount. It was also a success for Sega: as a popular local console exclusive, it helped the Megadrive distinguish itself and catch up with the SNES.
