Todd Howard on life and work at Bethesda

Hey Patrons!

Here it is! The first of our new exclusive extended cut interviews; almost two hours of Bethesda history and insights with Todd Howard.

Our Bethesda documentary had many snippets from this but honestly it's probably minute-for-minute the most interest and dense interview about a studio's history that we've ever done. We had originally planned to publish some of these extended cuts on the channel but with Bethesda attracting so much ire from commenters - especially in the months after the launch of Fallout 76 - it didn't feel right to put these people in the firing line.

I think having this be the first of our new library of extended interviews is fitting. It's a great chat and we hope you like it.

We toyed with using Vimeo or Patreon's built-in video player to keep these more secure but last time around people had a big preference for unlisted YouTube videos so we're gonna roll with that for now. If videos start leaking we may have to swap out the links but let's go with this for now and see what happens. There are more coming this month too, so keep your eyes peeled!

Let us know what you think!

Todd Howard on life and work at Bethesda

Comments

Todd's story is awesome, he was determined to make games at Bethesda. I live a couple hours away from the Bethesda office where this was filmed in Rockville and have visited once before. Its crazy to look at that tiny building and think about ALL the amazing games which have come from inside it.

BGS has made some of my favorite games of all time, but Todd, in all his charm, can come off a little condescending/contrarian/controlling, like the multiple times he disagrees with your lighthearted mini summaries of what he just said, even though you were both agreeing. And then at the very end with his luke warm "it was good" when you said let's do this again sometime. Again: love me some Todd, but still interesting to me from my armchair, especially because of how BGS has been received over the last couple of titles (and the rumors about how he was the driving force behind no NPCs in F74, amid many protestations from senior staff, and then just the surprising level of boringness of Starfield, and then how a bunch of veteran staff left after Starfield).

Finally got around to watching this one, thanks so much! It was great to get the insight into how it all comes together and what makes a Bethesda game what it is.
