Call for Questions! / First Studio Patron Show

Hey folks!

10 piece of furniture later we seem to have a functioning studio. So it's time to record our first Patron show down here.

Whether you have questions about the big transition, the new podcast format, our upcoming docs on Outer Wilds, Creative Assembly, Bastion or whatever else, please stick them in the comments below and we'll answer them in the next patron show.

You have to name the skeleton today. Please have it answer to the name 'politishin'. No capitals and don't activate the spellchecker. I'll pay you $5 South African money for the honour. Thanks.

Christo Jooste

Hey Danny. Two questions on the ESRB doc: Were you tempted to push more on loot boxes / gambling, knowing people would (unfairly imo) critisise? Secondly, any plans to do docs on the equivalent rest of world bodies? In the UK used to be the very transparent BBFC but not PEGI. The differences in film classification are fascinating, US fine with violence but not sex, whereas German says ~ 'sex is good and normal so kids shouldn't see it, violence is bad'

Ben McSkelly

I wanted to know if you have considered doing a doc on Mojang post Notch? How did they feel about the transition? What's it like working on the game and for Microsoft now? I just felt like 2PP did a good job of documenting Minecraft but there is a second half of the story that no one I'm aware of has ever told.

Elliott Bynum

Any plans to have future docs in 4K?

Jazz Jackrabbit

What is your favorite part about being independent from a large company since you left gamespot etc? (Also, if you're willing to indulge me, What studio as a whole would you want to interview at any point in time past or present?)

TrainDoctor

What is haunting the studio and is it friendly or maleficent

Mike Adamson

Hey Danny! How's the family? You settling in in Oakland again alright? Now about Noclip, you guys build up a bit of a backlog off docs yet to be made if I remember correctly, so now that you got Jeremy in the studio, does that mean those will come out? Faster? Or are you more focusing on putting out more regular stuff and extra things like the podcast and the new new opinion show?

Bavo Debraekeleer

Hey Danny! Inspired by the ESRB doc where you let us know about the project long before publish, when you say you can’t talk about a project but eventually are able to, even when it still has a yet-to-be-determined release date, I was curious what is your personal rule about when you can talk about your docs? Do you set a particular date about telling everyone what your doing? Is it dependent if a date hasn’t been agreed upon between you and your subject (For example, “I’ll tell Patrons in a month and the public a month after”)? Or do you let everyone know once you have a certain amount of it done before you say anything (For example, if a project is 50% edited, or once you’ve concluded all filming, interviews, etc.)? I really enjoyed the ESRB doc, congrats on the studio move, and I'm looking forward to the next projects!

Brandon K Gann

Do you have any big plans for gear upgrade such as a cinema camera? Also would you ever consider doing a doc or doc series with a platform like Netflix, or is that a paywall you wouldn’t want to put your content behind? Excited to have the podcast more frequently, keep it up you beautiful boys

Tory Thompson

Hey Danny, love all of the NoClip content you've given to the world. I really believe what you are doing is a very important part of legitimising the games industry in the eyes of the world. My question to you would be would you ever consider trying to do a documentary on Oculus's story? Some parts of the story and some of the people involved are a bit controversial but I think it's a fascinating story from the resurrection of a long lost dream of virtual worlds to one of Facebook's key future ventures push to be the next computing platform. For a lighter question, where'd you recommend for a good breakfast roll?

Cormac White

Love hearing more about the studio space! What's it like designing it from a tech & data perspective? Does it enable you to change things with your workflow that make things better? Any sweet new toys you can show off?

Ethan Thibault

Hey Danny and Jeremy! When you guys started NoClip did you have the Rocket League doc lined up and ready to go, or did you start the company and just hope you would have developers interested in talking? I'm sure getting a portfolio and building a name made landing bigger studios like Bethesda and CD Project helped so I'm curious how certain you were before making the jump that developers would be interested.

Connor McNamara

How's your kiddo doing! Over a year now right? I had my kiddo slightly after yours, so was wondering how the transition with the family back to California has been. Fun fact I'm in your neck of the woods, in North Ireland, for 2 months on business. So hitting reset on a location with a baby has been something we have in common! It's lovely here, but boy does it rain!

Landon Robinson

Been here since the start and love the casual/laidback content! Question though, with the new podcast studio and format, are you planning to always try and cycle someone in to interview? Or are you planning to have episodes with just yalls take on the week?

Danny, I'm super excited to have more of your casual / opinion style content available in addition to everything in the "Noclip voice," and the new podcast is already a welcome addition to my week. My question is, do you see yourself doing more game reviews in the future, or was the Death Stranding video an outlier because of how unique it the game and discourse around it is? Also, will you be using this Patreon feed to keep us up-to-date on your Danny O’Dwyer YouTube channel, or are you trying to avoid crossing the streams? Thanks much!

Christopher Metzger

Hey Danny! More of a personal one here, but since setting up NoClip and operating out of your then new home in Maryland and now back in California, has it made it difficult to settle down, reflect and think "Yep I own this company. This is mine". Or on the opposite side, have the changes kept everything fresh and exciting considering you spend your time travelling while doing the docs? Also just wanted to say the ESRB doc was brilliant and such a great insight into something we know nothing about even though it plays such an important part in our hobby. Cheering on as always, from lovely Laois.

James O'Donnell

Hey Danny and team. Nicely done on the new studio. Does this mean we'll see more 'bonus clip' ?

Hey Danny! I'd love to hear a bit more about your post review process. Screening cuts, giving notes, making revisions and how to know when to finally lock an edit. I'm also curious about what your thoughts would be on doing a Doc about The "fallout" of Fallout 76? I know it's too soon but you being a long side Bethesda during that time and that would be an amazing foundation. Love everything you do! -Ryan from NYC

Ryan

Did you guys get the chance to play games outside Death Stranding and the 24 hour F1 stream? If so, what did you play? Also when will you announce the big NoClip LAN-party at your studio?

Max D

How are you finding editing in the studio compared to at home? I film and edit weddings from home, and have managed to get into a good system but it was troublesome at the start as I knew the TV and PS4 were right there. Also afternoon naps are brilliant!

Christopher Kelly

What are you most excited about in terms of decorating your new office space?

Henry Nguyen

How do you decide on who to get for the podcast? Is there a lineup planned or do you just ask people when they're in town?

Shell Comics

In terms of the Creative Assembly doc, how hands on have you been? Did Chris pitch this to you as a NoClip doc production or did you approach him about making something with CA after his own video on CA's TV show?

Christopher Kelly
