May Q&A Time! [Call for Questions]

Hey folks!

Thanks for all the well wishes, just back from my driving test which I'm happy to say I PASSED! So, now back to business.

Currently editing our strange and long Tokyo Behind the Scenes feature (see attached gif) which will be a patron-exclusive very soon. I'm hoping to get it out next week. On top of that I've edited a bunch of our GDC videos together which should be coming in the next fortnight too.

So this week I want to get a Q&A video out to answer any questions you might have about our upcoming FINAL FANTASY XIV doc, our summer plans, and anything else that comes to mind.

I'm especially eager this month after taking 2 weeks off, and being out of touch with everyone for so long.

So don't be shy, send them in!

Danny

Yo seriously how can I copy this gif onto my phone it's pure magic

Ever thought of making docs for a game in development or about to release?

Vincent Mochahari

Congratulations on the license and honeymoon, bud! As for your venture to Japan, I assume you had an interpreter/translator for certain (or all) interviews? I was wondering what was the process of acquiring one. Did Square Enix provide one for you or did you have to hire one? I was also wondering the challenges of interviewing with translators. Do you have to ensure a longer interview sessions to account for the time it takes for the translation? Also, was it a challenge to gain a rapport with the individuals you interviewed due to the language barrier? Thanks for your time, bud. Excited to see what you got in the pipeline!

Beau

Do you have a favorite sandwich? When you've got two slices of bread, what do you most like to slam between them?

Would you consider doing stories the focus on future technologies and trends that may impact our gaming experiences in the future? What are the emerging technologies that most people haven't seen but that game makers are starting to thinking about?

Tyler Steben

From an outsider's perspective, the time and effort required to make the amazing docs that NoClip creates seems to at times be very stressful for you. Going forward what will you do to address this issue? Do you see NoClip taking on any extra help? and if so, do you have any idea on how to increase funding to employ people? <3

Hey Danny! Are there any plans to cover the growing game-development scene i Denmark/Scandinavia? In the last couple of years we've really seen the scene get a lot of traction with games like Inside, Limbo and off course going back to the Hitman series. Being a Dane I think it would be super interesting to see how the scene has developed and where it's going in the coming years. Keep up the awesome work!

Marcel Hedemand

Would you ever consider making a doc about a game/something where you don't have access to the creator(s)?

Hey Danny, Tayto or King?

Eoghan Brady

Who else is in your radar for your profile series? The first ID members (like John Romero whom you have interviewed) are obvious considerations. I'm curious if anyone else is planned. edit: Greg Kasavin and Super Giant comes to mind, though timing wise it would make more sense to wait until after Pyre releases and seeing what reception that gets before digging into that one.

Kristopher

Is Cliff Bleszinski be on the /noclip Profiles list? I'd love to hear some of his stories about starting in game development so young and essentially growing up in the industry!

Matt K

Can't wait for that behind the scenes video! No question here, Danny, just a quick bit of advice. Now that you've got your license, head down to AAA (or whatever agency handles this in your area) and drop the $40 to get an international driving permit. You may never actually need it, but having it done ahead of time is well worth if you ever do. Plus, if you come back to Japan, you can use it to drive the MariKarts on the street!

Korphyn

Out of all the people you've gotten to speak to and meet for Noclip, who's the one you got the most giddy about? The one that peaked the fanboy meters?

Harry Mitchell

What's up Danny?! I've mentioned before how much I loved your streams last year where you'd just get up in the morning and ramble about the games you've been playing, the industry, and just about anything else that was somewhat of a "current event". Any way you'd be able to either start those up again (Just weekly would be cool) or integrate that into something you're already doing such as these Q&A videos? And I know you're super busy and I don't want to pile on even more onto your plate, so if not that's cool too! Love, love, love your content! And never feel rushed, we can all wait!

Amir Rangnekar

While you were on your honeymoon, in one tweet you mentioned thinking about your work-life balance. It sounded like it wasn't everything you hoped it would be. So my question is, are you okay, buddy? How ya doin'? The whole NoClip project seems to be going well, but that doesn't mean that it's not taking a toll on you. I want to hear how you're doing. Best wishes, and good luck with the next projects!

I've seen that dancing in japan's streets gif like 15 times in the last couple days and its still getting a giggle out of me, my question is have you thought about using snapchat or instagram stories to do quick and easy BTS clips? Pulling your phone out for 90secs showing little chucks of the latest noclip adventure could be really fun I think, you could stop worrying so much about shooting stuff specifically for the BTS video and you'd be forced to not spend any time editing it. Excited to see your catchup with the ID software fellas at GDC!

Harribo

Hey Danny, before you went to Japan you mentions that there was a perception about the japan gaming industry not being particularly open to the media and difficult to deal with. After being there, what are you thoughts on that perception now? Also, how did your interview style change having a translator and did you have any awkward lost in translation moments?

My gaming started with the ZX Spectrum, so I really enjoyed From Bedrooms to Billions. Have you seen it? How did you rate it as a documentary? Also are you considering a documentary/documentaries on hardware rather than software? If so which system would you pick? That's probably too many questions in one post, but what the heck!

Simon Skittrell

First of all - one epic gif that is! We need to use it from now on everywhere, every time! Grats on passing driving exam. First of all - get a car with mechanical transmission (consider it a built in anti-theft system here in states). As for make and model, I love hatchbacks and Subaru Impreza is a fun car to drive plus cheap in maintenance. As for question - to be honest I got a bit worried when I heard you felt that your mental state was impacted in first season of Noclip. It sucks not fully enjoying an achievement like that. What is your plan to maintain a good state of mind (besides office and home split)? And what do you do to relax beyond video games?

Tohir Tillyaev

Danny, through all your Noclip communication in previous QA posts, on Twitter and through almost every video it seems obvious, that you need to be personally invested in "telling a story" and genuinely passionate about the topic you are covering. How do you cope with pressure, that some not insignificant number of people would "really like you to" cover a game that you simply do not like that much? Of course, every game has its story, but could you please share some of your brain process when it comes to "pleasing the audience" here on Patreon. Thank you for all your awesome work.

Hey Danny, this might seem a bit of a weird question, but how (and when) do you handle the business side of NoClip. Taxes, social security, paying your employees etc. I'm intrigued as to how a company that is funded through a community operates in such a manner

Danny, I've been curious what plans you may have or what your goals may be in terms of covering previously underrepresented groups in game development? There are lots of diverse independent, solo, and small studios out there (some of whom you've already featured on Noclip, obv.) and you've always seemed willing and able to shine a light in their direction. Thanks!

David Fetterman

Hey Mr. O'Dwyer! I saw via Twitter you secured your pass for E3. Congrats! Is there a specific game you would like to get your hands on at the event OR what one aspect of the show (Press conference, booth, etc.) are you looking forward to the most? Thanks for taking my question if you do and have a wonderful day!

Brandon K Gann

Hey Danny hey! After your recent trip to Japan, did you stumble across any other opportunities toward telling the stories on recent hits from the country, like Persona 5, Yakuza, and Nier? Obviously you couldn't come out and tell us too much, but curious if you think you'll have a trip back any time soon.

Kyle Anderson

Do you have any more ideas or plans for including the community directly in a future doc, like you did with the Rediscovering Mystery videos?

Hey Danny. I've always been a fan of your interviewing style. I was wondering 1. How do you figure out your interview camera setup (position of the camera, position of who you're interviewing) and 2. If you were to give someone advice who's new to interviewing someone on camera, what would it be.
