OUR NEXT SERIES: The Fall & Rise of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

HELLO FROM TOKYO!

I'm writing this at 6:32 on Friday night. It's probably Thursday where you are right now. I hope you're having a nice week, because ours has been a real doozy.

Today we wrapped up a marathon of interviews at the Square Enix offices here in Shinjuku. Over the past few days we recorded over a dozen hours of interviews with the developers responsible for FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

Upon hearing that you're going to fall into one of two camps. Either you have no interested in the series or MMO genre and are wondering how we came to this decision? Or you've heard the stories. The stories of how the original game was launched to appalling reviews. How hundreds of thousands of players fled immediately. How many thought it may have damaged the Final Fantasy brand beyond redemption. And of course, the story of its remarkable rebirth.

This project, which we've been in active planning for over two months, has been a massive undertaking. But telling the story of how it all happened has been an incredible honor. This week, through sitting down with those who worked on 1.0 and A Realm Reborn, from upper executives to localization experts, we got the answers to help us tell this story.

We're going to take our time on this one. Especially as the translation element is going to require a lot of TLC. The series will be live in early June.

In the meantime we have a full doc on Spelunky, the wonderful interviews we shot at GDC, not to mention all the behind the scenes videos we've been shooting this week in Tokyo, coming between now and then.

This project was a big undertaking for us, and quite frankly, it's costing a hell of a lot of money to produce. So I just want to take the moment to thank you all for your continuing support. A project of this size would be inconceivable without your amazing support. We've worked ourselves to the bone this week to repay your trust in us and we can't wait to tell this story We hope you're as excited as we are.

Talk soon,

Danny

I am a long time fan of your work, and just became a Patreon supporter. I just returned from Tokyo 2 weeks ago, and if I hadn't been celebrating my girlfriends 50th birthday, I would have visited Squire Enix. I am so jealoous! I might have to pitch you an idea or two so you'll hire me... LOL. Seriously.

As someone who has been playing the game since 1.0, I'm really looking forward to this!

I can't wait to see this!

Great Work Danny!

Thank you Danny and Jeremy for doing this awesome work!

Bavo Debraekeleer

When i started to read this, i was in camp 1, at the finish i ended up in camp 2. It's funny, because the way you are telling this, makes me proud of being a patreon. It's a two way street for me; I am paying you money to see these docs come to life, and you (two)are paying us back, by delivering docs in which i can feel passion and the means for developers to give their games a soul in a whole new way. That idea excites me and i am glad that via this way i have the means to be a part of it's realization. So thank you Danny. P.s. Which games in the end, get's the 'no clip treatment' don't matter to me as much. It's the story behind them that do.

As someone that played FFXIV 1.0 back in the day, and came back when ARR launched, I'm excited to see this one.

Nooo! I don't know if I can resist yet one more temptation to get into FFXIV and give up every other aspect of Life. After spending an entire unemployed week, sleeping in two-hour stretches while a friend took a shift, to camp a MOB for one item in FFXI, then quitting the game a week or so later, true MMOs now frighten me.

Did play sooo much of this game when it relaunched and I still love it. So stoked about this :D

FF14 is one of my favorite games, so I'm stoked.

Frank Howley

This is a story I've been dying to hear ever since my Collectors Edition of FFXIV 1.0 arrived and I was so very bitterly disappointed. To then have my love for the series rescued by the frankly excellent A Realm Reborn was a complete shock, and I cannot -wait- to hear what was going on behind the scenes. Awesome work, Danny, super excited!

Kittz

Great work my friend, you guys are machines. Don't work too hard and burn yourself out though.. but there is an element of fun in your job that isn't in others ;-) Cheers Danny, safe travels!

Brian Johnston

Awesome! Can't wait!

Yo Danny, this sounds amazing. Congrats on being able to tell a story that I'm sure is uncomfortable for a lot of those devs to talk about. Take your time. Don't kill yourself with trying to make sure there's always something coming out. You're making content for people who already trust your product, so we're willing to wait for it. You've already done so much to prove that our money is going to the right place. Can't wait to see where else you go.

Devon Fisher

Tho I probably won't watch the Final Fantasy one, I know there are tons of people who will be super jazzed to watch your video on the series. Super looking forward to the Spelunky and GDC vids tho :)

Nick Grugin

You're the perfect person to help tell this story, and I couldn't be more excited. Huge FF fan, wasn't into MMOs (tried WoW & GW, didn't stick for me.) until A Realm Reborn. I was skeptical because I remembered its original release and how much of a bad reception it garnered, but A Realm Reborn is something else. I'd go as far to say my favorite of the entire Final Fantasy series at this point. The whole Calamity event is something I wish I was there to experience at the time, and how they tied that into the reboot's story was just amazing. And their updates and expansions have been top-notch most of the time for me.

I love turnaround stories but am not familiar with this one. Looking forward to finding out the details about what was screwed up, how a decision was made to turn it around, and what was done to fix it. Credit where it's due, I hope.

Actually am super excited to see the deep dive into what happened. The game drastically changed and went from flop to hit.

Mikey Phillips

Like others that have posted. I'm not into MMOs at all, but this is really cool. I'm definitely interested in hearing these stories. Love the work you guys are doing!

Michael Bataligin

Sounds great Danny! I'm not personally an MMO guy but I can imagine the story behind the release and aftermath and am super interested. That's why Noclip is great, you are able to tell interesting, engrossing stories. For me that's the draw, not necessarily a subject that's my "fav" in games. Keep up the great work guys.

Welcome to Japan! You're just in time for it to start getting hot again!

fireaza

This is awesome! I figured it was FF but didn't know that you'll pick this version. Great to hear you guys want to tell a different and yet very inspiring story. Safe travels and good luck with the final doc! Looking forward to it.

Tohir Tillyaev

I've almost no experience with FF as a series and no experience with MMOs, but I'm nevertheless looking forward to this :)

Andy Latham

Looking forward to watching it! πŸ˜„

Amy Gilroy

Nice one. Called Square Enix on your Twitter post. Never played FFXIV or any MMO's but I'm still excited to see this.

Stephen Barr

!!! That's awesome! I've spent a fair amount of time in Eorzea. Fantastic game with a real classic Final Fantasy feel to it. Can't wait Danny!

This is great! I'm excited in two ways for this: 1) FFXIV: A Realm Reborn is one of my top 3 favorite MMOs, so I really look forward to hear more about it and their incredible turnaround, and 2) Noclip can get some notoriety in Japan/asian countries that could open the doors to other cool stories later on :D

Not Thursday in AUS! Psyched for the new project.

Nice! I've been considering FF XIV for a while. Guess now is as good a time as any to have a go.
