Patron Q&A: Call for Questions!

Hey folks,

How of you been keeping? It's been an insanely busy month over here. Not only are we putting the finishing touches to our docs on The Witness & Spelunky, but we're also in post-production on our GDC videos (10 of them) and the Quake retrospective we shot at id at the end of last year. The bottleneck has come from flying to PAX East but hopefully the patron only behind-the-scenes and panel have kept you entertained while we finish off this stuff.

Behind the scenes there's been a lot going on too. As most of you know, we're flying to Tokyo in a week's time for a big project. I'm achingly close to launching my new opinion show. I was also helping Drew out a little bit with the launch of his Patreon Cloth Map , we're back recording Shift+F1  every week. And I'm gonna try and support the guys over Kinda Funny as much as I can over the next few weeks as they're a man down for the time being. As such I've not been doing as much live video, and I'm wondering if this is something I should continue. Interested as to what you think.

Anyway, enough about what we're doing. I want to hear your questions and comments about what we've been doing. So, as ever, please leave them in the comments below and I'll be sure to record the reply video over the weekend. Expect it early next week (probably Monday).

And for our new Patrons, if you have any questions which you'd feel more comfortable asking privately, you can reach me on the Patreon PM system.

Don't be shy, leave a question!

Danny

I like your live streams cause I like to hear your opinion of what's happening in gaming, maybe your new opinion show will satisfy that itch, though it probably has another feel to it since that's edited. I also like your streams to discover random games like back in the day with Random Encounter. Maybe, like Dom Greves said, completing a big game is a bit too much, just a random game, what you feel like playing atm would be easier to squeeze in your busy schedule. But I think I said it before, the docs are more important. If you feel you don't have the time for them, like now with the crazy amount of stuff your doing, you don't have to do them. I don't think the live streams is why most people are supporting Noclip. We get your opinion on the podcasts you appear on now and again, thanks to Hassun for always posting them in the Discord chat, so if you keep doing those regularly we get your opinion through there and I like Kinda Funny so it's great seeing you on their shows as well.

I'm a relatively new patron--I tend not to watch let's plays and would rather you focus your time and attention on creating great docs and even more small updates--like it would be interesting for you to do a video around the unique challenges of shooting in Japan--how are you preparing, what are you anticipating. Definitely would like to see behind the scenes stuff from your Japan shoot too!

Do you feel like you need to attend events like PAX to grow audience/increase revenue for NoClip in addition to the content?

Colby Perry

I definitely miss the live content. I was really enjoying O'Carina of Time, and I hope you find the time to continue it.

With Drew going off to to start his own project, I've been doing a lot of thinking about what other Giant Bomb folks would do if they went off to start their own thing. So if you could pick one member of GB to break off and start their own project, who would it be, and what would the project be? To Jeff's credit, I feel like this is a bit of a difficult thought experiment since the content on the site already feels like it's stuff that they want to create and aren't doing to try and be a more typical gaming outlet. Also want to say I really appreciate you helping out the Kinda Funny guys in their time of need, would love to see you co-host some of the morning shows if you find the time.

Do you ever think you would ever be able to make a doc on Nintendo like on zelda or Mario??

When, if ever, will you finish Ocarina of Time? :p

Slein

Tournament of lies is what I'm missing most. The live stuff I'm only interested in for particular games (old or new), but a regular(weekly?) live stream interaction with your audience probably helps with support. I know you already have Discord and Q&As for community interaction.

Question: do you still think the 30 minute doc format is optimal for an online audience? I was impressed by Nintendo's recent 3 x 10 min Making of BOTW series. It can be done.

I'd miss the "live" stuff if you stopped doing it. I rarely catch it live but the live format is still very entertaining to watch back later. I understand the desire to help out your pals at Kinda Funny but I often find their shows indistinguishable from the "ad-supported" games coverage I thought you were desperate to avoid. The current crisis seems one entirely of their own making. Maybe complete live playthroughs of Zelda were a bit over-ambitious though!

I've been keeping up with your updates from Patreon via email. So I'm surprised that for some reason the PAX behind the scenes stuff never reached my inbox! Whoops!

Definitely better than the first, and about as good as Bayonetta 2. I second this.

I know fighting games are a very niche genre, but they have a rich history and undeniable legacy in gaming, as well as a very competitive, passionate fan base to this day. It's growing exponentially with EVO 2016, and this year's EVO being the culmination of that. As a life long fighting game fan, I'd like to see something about how it began, where it is now, and where it could be in the future. Something that gamers who aren't really into fighting games, who don't really understand them, or who are a little apprehensive to invest their time and money in them can watch and gain a perspective on them from people who live and breath it. It's especially interesting to think about a documentary like this not coming from within the fighting game community, presented from of an unbiased, non-FGC perspective, coming from someone who they can relate to, who knows all the right questions to ask. What I'd like to see wouldn't be so much for exposure as it would be about discovery, broadening horizons, and community. Would a documentary like that be something you'd consider, or be interested in? Thanks, - Zach

My gaming started with the ZX Spectrum, so I really enjoyed From Bedrooms to Billions. Have you seen it? How did you rate it as a documentary? Also are you considering a documentary/documentaries on hardware rather than software? If so which system would you pick? That's probably too many questions ;-)

Simon Skittrell

You thinking of doing anything on Shadow of War? Was actually up at the studio the other day, guy leading tour at Monolith said they loved your stuff. :) Keep up the good work man. Been a high tier support for awhile, haven't regretted it yet :)

Nick Grugin

As long as your main content is still great and coming out in a timely fashion (it is and i love it all), you do whatever the hell you want man. Do what makes you happy and don't put yourself in a position where you're overly stressed.

James Huffman

Name 3 Rockstar games u want a follow up too.... Mine are la noire, GTA San Andreas ie a here and now type... and Bully but set him working in a Google type building/commune 😎

Hey Danny, I know you're always busy working on new stuff and helping out your buds which I think is what people love about you so I'm good with the live content as is. I'd rather give you more time to work on stuff at your own pace then tie you down to X show at Y time a week. For ex, I can't wait to see the new "The point" but I wouldn't wanna rush you like at GameSpot with the "Top 5 Nazi Potato Salad DOTA" episode. I'd rather give you time to get that level of polish and create the videos you're passionate about. If I had to ask for anything, I'd want a VLOG type vidoe when you go to Japan of how you figured your way around and how your stay was. This way I could try to use that as a guide for when(if) I go to japan myself. That's a video I could keep coming back to. Anyways, Keep up the great work! Love yah bud. See yah soon

What is your post-production philosophy? What do you do if you don't have (and can't get) contextual B-Roll, do you have a rule for how often it's ok to cut back to the subject speaking rather than having B-Roll over it, what is your post workflow from start to finish? stuff like that. Also do you create the doc and put it out when you think it's finished or do you show it to other people (Jeremy, your wife, trusted friends) to get input before calling it complete?

Tory Thompson

If you'll be on Kinda Funny the next few weeks I'll be looking forward to that. I feel like your update videos offer us the main avenue for your thoughts on the current gaming climate so I'll like to hear more type of content like that.

Amir Rangnekar

With the upcoming Tokyo visit, have you planned any sight seeing in Tokyo or is there anything particular your looking forward to seeing in Tokyo? game related or not

Where do you get your inspiration for subjects or thoughts from? Favourite youtubers or content creators that dive deep into nerd culture or gaming? E.g. Game Makers Toolkit, SuperBunnyHop etc.

Axel Lindberg

Do you have any plans for physical merchandise down the road? Shirts? Cups? Complete season-based Blu-ray box sets that include all the behind the scenes stuff?

Legion Vs Ninja

Hey Mr. O'Dwyer! I know there hasn't been much put out, but the coming doc-ket *wink wink* has me really excited, but my question is about content types. With the exception of your talk with Mr. Romero and sitting down with all kinds of developers, it has been all about specific games. Don't get me wrong! I have loved everything you've done to this point (with DOOM still being my favorite) but have you considered doing subjects such as game music (this question is inspired by your talk with Mr. Gordon for DOOM), or what REALLY goes into some aspect (be it animation, level desgin, etc.) of development (this is inspired by the false attacks against the EA employee over Mass Effect recently)? Thanks for taking my question if you do, and don't burn yourself out on doing so much awesome stuff! Have a great day!

Brandon K Gann

Love the open communication and transparency as much as possible but still keeping things low key. I personally enjoy your "production" type stuff more than the "let's play" because I think you do great work on the docs and everything. Happy to see you on KF and think your a good voice to be on there. So I hope your able to keep that going for a few weeks if possible ok your end. Understandable it takes awhile to travel to that side of the bay for only a hour or so podcast so if it's not a recurring thing that makes sense. But do what is gonna make you happy and help you produce the best content possible. We all look forward to the docs and really enjoy them. Can't wait to see what they all turn out like.

Now that we're 6 months in, are there any types of games that you've become more interested in covering than when Noclip started?

Although possibly difficult with the post-production of the other projects you'd be cooking at the time, would you consider a short "residency" (for want of a better phrase) type filming block? Like a "week in the life of" behind the scenes of a new game's development, or when they're close to release like a look at what it's like trying to get your game off the ground? (Maybe the latter is more pertinent to indie devs).

Steve Fiori

How much of a voice do you think Noclip should / will have independent from that of the subjects interviewed? Or put another way, do you ever foresee a situation where the narrative of one of your documentaries does not align with what an interviewee puts forth? Thanks as always, you're the best!

Christopher Metzger

Would you or have you considered following the development of a AAA game start to finish? Obviously a big time commitment but Motherboard had a great long article about the development of Gears 4 and it would be cool to have something like that in video form that wasn't made by the developer itself. Thanks for all the great docs Danny!

Capen

Is there something as a sweetspot for you here on Patreon? Some kind of amount, where you would need to rethink the whole Noclip idea as it is set up now? I am talking high/low amount of money regarding the sum you have now. Let's say you will get 100K tomorrow, does anything change?

Any plans on going after the stories with unhappy endings? Specifically projects that we get so excited for at the start but, end up getting cancelled along with the occasional bad press and unfortunate studio closures. Phil Fish and Fez 2 come to mind or, The Last Guardian and the original Prey 2 develepment shift are a few I'd like to hear about. I love the work that you do and I guess the question I am really asking is whether or not you'll travel down the investigative journalism route in any of your future works?

What's your thoughts on the Switch hardware? Battery life, durability of screen, TV mode etc

Harribo

Glad to see you've got a lot in the pipeline! Has it become easier to negotiate interviews and visits these past 3 months, are you having to introduce yourself and NoClip still or do most company's, at least in North America, know who you and NoClip are?

Liam Brown

Hey Danny! Love the work you've done, can't wait for what's happening next. My question is, what funny behind the scenes stories do you have about the docs you're wrapping up? - Jilly

Wolf Jilly Jill

What is the likely hood of getting with Yoko taro and seeing what happened behind nier automata. That game had no reason to be as good as it ended up. Plus I think yoko taro would be an interesting thing to look into as well as platinum.

Mikey Phillips

No questions but looking forward to seeing you on KF over the next few weeks. Also, Shift F1 is everything I needed in a podcast this week - excited for the race tomorrow.
