Patron Q&A #3 - Call for Questions!

Hey Patrons!

It's that time again! October has a lot going on with our first doc shoot, launching two live shows and the re-launch of my opinion show. It's also our second month of funding, so I'm sure you have questions about what we're investing in. Whatever you're questions, I can't wait to answer them!

Put your questions in here and I'll answer as many of them as possible in a Q&A video later this week. Also, just to remind you, if you have questions or inquiries that are more private, you can always reach me directly using Patreon's Direct Messaging System.

Now...GO GO POST QUESTIONS!

Barry's.....I dunno mate I love Tayto and King.....ugh....King?And Toffeepops 100%

What is your research/planning process and how far in advance do you plan. We know you're shooting a doc now, but how far have you planned? The pre-production phase is in my opinion the most important part, especially when on a budget. Do you have a producer. I seem to see a lot of 'plans' for non-documentary related stuff, is it fair to ask where the core focus is for the next 3 months.

How hard will it be for you to get in on the ground floor of a development cycle? Like embedding with a game throughout its development.

Hey Danny, are there any"big/important" game(s) you feel like you missed out on, besides Ocarina of Time? Best of luck with Noclip, can't wait for the first doc!

Hey Danny, best of luck with Noclip, I`ve got 2 questions. 1. are you planning on covering cancelled games? there are stories worth telling and it would be a shame if they were forgotten, 2. is there some topic in the world of videogames, that you feel is impossible for you to cover? Thanks!

Is the plan that the production team will consist solely of you and Jeremy, or are there plans to hire other freelancers along the way for assorted tasks? I'm so excited for what's coming and really hope I have time to join the next Hangout.

Kalle Färm

What types of things are you investing patron contributions in these next few months?

What game when you first played it made you most feel "This is a game changedr..." (pun intended) i.e. that it was massively going to revolutionise games/the industry in a good or bad way way.

Jonathan London

Firstly, love your work man! :) You are my favorite voice in gaming biz. I really liked the topic about games affecting everyday life. Which game made the most profound impression on you? One that made you reconsider your opinion on some (or many) topic?

Piotr Kostecki

Now that you've been working from home for about a month, how's the work/life balance going? I'm sure it's a lot different from when you were working at Gamespot.

When you're traveling are you going to try and plan time for meet ups with patrons and fans?

Kyle Hinze

One more turn?

If you could erase a game from existence, first of all would you and if so which one? The reason I ask is due to app stores deleting games that are no longer updated. Keep up the good work.

James Spibey

With NoClip, The Point, Vice, and some Polygon features being examples of short-form docs, do you think that format is where gaming coverage is moving towards? Obviously, reviews will always exist and Twitch and YouTube will be around for watching people play games but with regards to opinions and features do you think that's the way the industry will lean?

If you havent played red dead, that should be youre first, maybe alternate between big timeconsuming games and lighter not as long gsmes. Doom, uncharted and I would guess max payne 3 is great in between games.

Thomas Kaspersen

You.ve mentioned a few times that you owned your own company back in Ireland when you were a teenager- what was that company and how did you start it so young?

Tory Thompson

Did you ever find out where all the bees were comming from?

Padrino

Hi! What is your favorite beer?

Hey Danny. Are you also going to be covering some technology changes over time as well? There are so many regional differences that I thought it could be interesting.

Justin Salisbury

I presume you have a number of story ideas already bouncing around in your head. Where are you finding inspiration for these stories? Are they coming from prior engagements you've had? Are people coming forward to you with ideas? Are they just things you think are cool and have never had the budget to accomplish before? Cheers Danny!

Craig Parker

How do you handle lighting? Both inside and outside.

Steven Francisco Santana

What sort of gear are you planning to use? As a camera nerd I have to ask.

How has the change been from mainstream, corporate games journalism, to this project been (pressure, familiarity, backlash from the people who think a system works, why change it, etc.)? Has it been an eye opening adventure where you don't know what's coming next where the idea just came one day, or have you had this idea for a while and finally found the time and conditions to make it happen with the industry connections you've made over the years, (It's the Irish accent lol), and the knowledge of a broken system that needs a ripple in water, a change, like the industry has become stagnant? A need for a different perspective.. Do you know what I mean? Cheers mate, Ace so far, can't wait for your in depth stuff ;-)

Brian Johnston

I want to know how you learned what you know about filmmaking. Was it all from real world practice and good teachers? Online resources? or are you into the "Fake it 'til you make it" approach? I can't wait to see your first Doc! -Tory

I have a growing back catalog of games and with all the great games coming out at the end of the year it's guaranteed to get bigger. I am currently playing Rise of the Tomb Raider for the Xbox One. I need your help to choose the next game I play. Here are your choices: PC: The Witcher 3, Dark Souls and Batman Arkham Knight Xbox One: Shadow of Mordor PS4: Uncharted 4, Doom, Bloodborne, Metal Gear Solid V Xbox 360: Max Payne 3, Red Dead Redemption GOTY. I will play whichever one you choose. What are some stand out games in your back catalog that you are looking forward to playing?

Will you be focusing on documentaries about the games themselves, or will you delve into ones solely about some of the developers or designers behind the games, like a deep-dive on Chris Metzen? Or even people on your side of the industry, like Greg Kasavin or Heff Gerstmann would be interesting tales to tell.

I am sure you are aware of Andy Kellys "Other Places" videos. If not you should give them a watch. http://www.ultrabrilliant.co.uk/videos/ Would you consider some sort of completely in game videos? Either with 'you' investigating the in game world, or in some way treating the in game characters as interview subjects.

Fragglerock

What do you think of the VR "backpack"? Do you think it'll be popular enough that they'll make smaller and lighter versions of it, or do you think it's just a niche way to play something that's already catering to a niche market?

Kyle Castle

I've got 2: 1. I really liked the Secret Code videos you did on unknown/indie games. It was a shame to only see 4 of them, and when you did the first 24 game marathon I asked then if you would consider more, which you said you would. Given that was years ago at this point and things have changed so much, do you have any plans as part of noclip to do a feature on totally unknown indie games (Enviro-Bear 2000 comes to mind!) ? 2. I know advertising is a bit part of games websites, and clickbait titles. I've always wondered how advertising revenue is paid or calculated when someone uses an addblocker. For instance, if someone has adblock, does the site recieve no ad revenue from that users visit, or does it work on a percentage basis, as in "This month we had x number of views. Of those, approx x% were using adblockers. Therefore the final number of users not using adblockers was y"?

What do you think are the shortcomings of the games media as they are today, also, where will you move to when Lord Donald T. takes the White House throne?

Daniel Nøss

Your piece on games as a personal treatment for depression really opened my eyes to you. I, like you and many others, have gone through that. Do you have plans to do a further look into games as a therapeutic tool for things beside depression? Things like learning disorders, PTSD or other conditions I am unaware of. Thanks.

Rob Curran

Do you plan at any point to talk about video games as an education material? I think video games make use go through range of various emotions and learn about various aspects of this world in a very interactive format. I don't think there is enough of facts like that out there.

Tohir Tillyaev

Looking to getting into video editing, I have to do a portion of a History project as a video for school, what would you recommend for a first timer(what programmes, courses, websites or web series) to learn the basics?

Most overrated game of all time?

Uncle Jam

You mentioned that if you were to tackle depression/mental health again you would bring in people more qualified to talk about it. Have you considered other sensitive subjects like sexism or racism (in games) with guest specialists as well?

What methods/programs do you use to keep track of everything, whether it be your schedule for the week like when to do streams and appear on other shows, the list of tasks you have to do for your current/future projects, etc? Also, any tips for others that work from home and may have trouble with discipline and staying on task? Thanks, Danny!

Will your wife be joining you on multiplayer streams or isn't she comfortable with that? Or any other guests like Alexis for example?

Bavo Debraekeleer

Fantasy Video Game Website: You get to pick 5 folks from any outlet to build an outlet with. Go!

I just want a bit of clarification on something. I know No Clip is going to be covering gaming culture topics as well as games themselves, but are the games you will cover only upcoming or recent games or will you make some docs covering older games and past events from the gaming industry? I would love to see some deep dives on older games or the history of specific developers and publishers (a history of Sega would be fascinating, for instance.).

In 2015, I worked at movie theater and Jesse Ventura threatened to break my neck over Star Wars tickets

Fun question! What's your personal front-runner for GOTY 2016? I've been diving into Darkest Dungeon again. That game is so insanely good.

What other names did you consider before coming with Noclip?

Haven't been able to watch the other QA videos yet, so I'm sorry if this is a repeat Q. What headphones are you rocking? How comfortable are they?

Is there an adress we can send you mail to?

Thomas Kaspersen

Hi Danny about Kojima/Konami debacle - i know it was asked before. but is it really possible to make a Noclip documentary on that subject? who will you interview, that had anything to do with kojima production and konami, and willing/able to talk about that? don't get me wrong i would love to see that documentary and lots of people asked for it. but is it possible?

Yakov Verch

Hey Danny I know you said you did not play much Nintendo growing but do you plan on creating any documentaries on Nintendo. A couple ideas I would have would be a documentary on how the NES changed video game history or maybe even the Nintendo Sega console wars would be a good idea. I know they have been done before but I would enjoy seeing a documentary like that from your perspective. Keep up the good work.

Are you planning some trips to Japan? Either to gather some stories about specific companies, or about the landscape of the Japanese gaming culture? Is travel + gaming culture a combination you may look into someday? When you first pitched the show you mentioned No Reservations as an example of the style you'd like to pursue. Just wondering how far that inspiration goes. Thanks!

Would you agree that giant bomb helped usher in a more personal focus on the gaming industry?

Thomas Kaspersen

Is Funcom, the longest journey, something you think is worth doing a documentary of in the future?

Thomas Kaspersen

Hey Danny, who are the people that influenced you the most? top 3 if it's not much. Greetings from Romania! All the best!

Do you think First encounter will bring you to cover games and companies you've not thought you would?

Thomas Kaspersen

Second Graham's question about affect of Brexit on games in the Uk. Also effect on games in Ireland (who will be worst hit) and maybe rest of Europe.

Jonathan London

Hey Danny, any chances of an esports documentary happening? I've been following professional DotA for years and it would be pretty neat to see the game from a different perspective. Cheers!

As someone who's now worked in the Republic of Ireland, London and the USA, how do you think Brexit will affect the British games industry?

Graham Robinson

Do you plan on covering any vr games in the near future? With all the trial and error going on in that industry at the moment it would be fascinating to see how two different studios create ways to make vr more enjoyable. Cheers mate, all the best.

Is there a game, or are there topics you won't cover for any reason, be it for subject matter or something you may personally disagree with? Thanks for taking my question if you do and have a wonderful day Mr. O'Dwyer.

Brandon K Gann

So some people are pretty internet savvy. Lets say people figure out where you're flying, deduce what company you're going to see, etc. Would you want potential doc subject to get out before you announce it proper?

Barry's Tea or Lyons Tea? Tayto or King? Toffeepops or Viscount?
