Project Updates!! (in progress & upcoming, WOO!)
Added 2023-11-18 14:57:30 +0000 UTC
Hello friends!!! It's going to be a crazy couple of months ahead, so I wanted to chat with you about what I'm up to, what I WILL be getting up to, and some real talk, hehe.
I'm very excited for the next few projects and I hope you are too! As always, thank you for being here, it means the world!!! LOVE UUUU.
Also, I understand how you feel, in regards to not being much of a "Christmas person." My Dad definitely was - he'd decorate the entire house with holiday cheer. He had a series of strokes on Christmas of 08' that he eventually died from later in 09' ( he was a chain smoker for 40+ years).. I try, but the holidays can leave me feeling empty. At any rate- I hope you get a chance to enjoy your Yuletide season, and I look forward to the Rose DeWitt- Bukater reveal.

I love Titanic! The movie, and the actual ship - I'm a sucker for anything Edwardian. You'll do an amazing job, and will look beautiful. I'm new here, but I will just echo what others have been saying. . . As much as I enjoy you and your content, I'd not want you to burn yourself out. I understand the need to create, especially when your product is what pays your mortgage and feeds you, but take care. The movie "Somewhere in Time," with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour, is another favorite for Edwardian inspiration. "Bid Time Return, " the book it's based on, is also excellent.

As a fellow artist I feel your pain. It is a constant struggle between I need a break and I’m not doing enough

Hi Rachel! I'm just now catching up on your content because I've been in my own chaos world. Hearing you mention the intense stressed out feeling, especially in your chest, really hit me hard. It is difficult not to cram every minute of the day full and the voices of the little productivity demon can get so loud :). My brain was screaming "omg Rachel dont over work yourself, take time to rest" and realizing I should maybe do the same >.<, lol oops. But really, if you are enjoying the process, ya gotta do what feels best. Greatly looking forward to your adventures and thank you for all you do!

I think beyond all the physical things you have to do, creative energy in itself can be really overwhelming. While magical, the desire to create, the constant processing of inspiration, the incessant planning can all lead to that unsettled excited/anxious feeling. I know I can barely watch a period movie without feeling unsettled by a need to create all the costumes 😂

STOKED for Rose, always wanted to have that fit.
Unsolicited advise tidbit: your viewers and your fellowship will not disappear if you take a month off which it seems you might need. Your content is lovely, we want you to continue making a living with it, but you deserve rest. Trust yourself. ♡

Thank you for all you do. You bring so much happiness. As self-employed I totally understand where you are coming from. But remember to be kind to you. Take some time to rest. We all love you no matter how much content you make.

I’m so excited for what’s coming in the future. Your videos always make me smile. And gives me ideas for craft/sewing creation shenanigans. If you are looking for something to bring you peace, I highly suggest playing this game called “The Red Dragon Inn.” If you were ever curious as to what dnd adventurers do when they are not adventuring. 10 out of 10. My husband and I force all visitors in our home to play. I hope your thanksgiving was restful.

Have you considered going down to one main video on YouTube a month and little additions every once in a while? Burnout is so real, and I’m sure your audience wouldn’t mind (I know I wouldn’t). Idk how the financial of all works though.

Thanks for being so honest - I totally relate to the burnout, especially at this time of year! Please take time off to rest if you need it; we’ll be here when you get back 🧡 Also, LOVE the patchwork sewing ideas. I have so many fabric scraps that need to be turned into something :)

If you happen to be gong through Knoxville on your way through Tennessee and need a place to stay, you should check out Ancient Lore Village! It would be pricey for just passing through, but if it's within your budget, I know you would love it. I've never been, but I live within weekend trip distance and have been dreaming of going one day!

What about...patchwork secret pants? Patchwork the fabric together, then cut your secret pants pattern out of it? Also, take care of yourself! It's hard, but resting and taking a break can be part of the process--we all need recharge time.
Sarah

seeing as how you love hobbits, i would love to suggest that you take all those scraps of fabric and make a Bilbo patchwork housecoat! i made one earlier this year and it's just amazing and literally my most favorite thing i've ever made! i used McCall's 7875 for it and the lower half is a circle skirt so plenty of swish!!!

WHOAAAMIGOSH! I grew up in North East TN and went to Dollywood for EVERY class trip! Make sure you go to the little chapel/schoolhouse and visit what my brothers and I call “Action Jesus”! It’s a quilt in which Jesus is depicted swinging from a vine and saving a lamb!!! 😄 Hilar
Also get the cinnamon bread at the grist mill! Sooo excited for you to see the whimsy that is Dollywood!

Don't be so hard on yourself, Rachel! We love you and your channel is our cozy safe place - but you must feel good and comfortable as well here :) I know exactly the feeling of anxiety while trying to relax and just do nothing, this is the difficult "art of let it go" :)
How about split the content? Titanic Part one and next week/two weeks part two? I'm sure that most of your viewers don't mind if project won't be finished in one video - we will have something to looking forward to :)

Did you get to Shannon Makes Hobbit patchwork coat? I swear this idea is so cool!

Totally get the internal stress as a self employed creative! Really really feels like there's no breaks sometimes - or rather that we don't allow ourselves to take the breaks needed! One thing I have to remind myself of often is "your worth does not equal your productivity" - it's a bloomin' hard one to take to heart!
Fran H (Siigii)
2023-11-19 11:44:36 +0000 UTC
If you can be negative and have a lil stress rant anywhere, it’s here dude! This is your space, you’re not gonna lose views or support by being real, that freelance/self-employed life is a bitch. Take it easy, one thing at a time, and try not to stress about the Content. Maybe a less sewing heavy video for your other Dec vid would be a good idea, considering you’ll be working on TWO outfits for December? Like I’m sure a lot of people have said already here we’ll watch pretty much anything you put out and are all happy for you to take some time to do what you need to do. That’s what this platform is for, to support you and your making in whatever way you need it 💚💚

Joining in here with others to say that we'd be more than happy for you to take some time off to relax! As much as I love your crafting videos, perhaps you could do some more sit down chatty videos or GRWM type content if that's easier for you? To be honest I'm happy watching any content you put out :)

I know videos make you money, and so not uploading could in turn hurt you more than help, but I think your audience would completely understand if you didn't upload for a month or so. Just take time for you to wind down, go on vacation, and not worry about creating for us.
I'd rather not see you for a bit than to have you burn out and never upload again, ya know?
Anyway, best of luck with all the projects AND the frazzledness, and know that your community absolutely adores you 💗

I will always be ready to watch your content whether you need a few weeks or a month. Take care of yourself. I don't know about everyone else but I'd rather you feel happy and passionate about what you do than feel burnout. I know that can be hard to step away as a content creator but even business jobs get breaks every few years. My friend gets one year off every year and then 4 weeks off every 4 years. So take care of yourself and good luck <3.

Thank you for doing what you do. You are a highlight to my week and have inspired me to do things Ive never considered before. Sounds like you have some exciting times ahead! I am similar in that I often have ideas running amok in my brain at all times. When I have an idea that starts to distract me, I write it down right away in a notebook with one or two bullet points and then go back to what I was doing. I dont let it get in the way but I can still go back and flesh out the thoughts later. I have so many notebooks! Right now Im starting my Christmas sewing blitz and and and Im starting to freak out a bit. Its fine. Its all fine... Then I have to get rocking on my first ever cosplay- Princess Vanellope Von Schweetz from Wreck It Ralph. My goal is to enter it in the NYC ComicCon next year. We shall see how that goes!
The Rose swim dress is one of my favorite costumes. Have you seen Lady Rebecca Fashion's version on YT? She has a great vlog about making the dress.
Schedule in some down time for you and Nick to just chill. Blackout weeks on the calendar for just you both to be you! You have to have some peace to make the chaos worthwhile. And yes...old houses have their own unique charms and frustrations.

I'm super excited for your upcoming projects! They all sound amazing. However, as many have said in this comment section already please don't hesitate to take some time off it gets all a bit too much. Burn out is very real and if your mind and body are constantly overwhelmed it can have very serious consequences. I speak from experience. It is not selfish in the least to take some time to rest. We can all see how hard-working and dedicated you are and no one would mind if you take a little longer to publish your videos. Be kind to yourself and take the time you need to find a healthy work-life/rest balance. ❤️

Don't push yourself too hard! I'm glad you're so excited for your projects but that stress-in-chest feeling is the worst, I don't wish it on anyone. Maybe one of the more complex projects could be a two-parter vid if necessary? Think of the cliffhanger jokes!

My family and I went a pretty good while ago when I was younger so I can't speak with 100% confidence, but from what I recall it was a pretty solid experience all around. There's interactive exhibits and stuff for kids, but also a lot you can learn and look at as a teen or adult. It's a legit museum with relics and everything, and I think they still have a replica iceberg (by replica I mean it's like an actual mini iceberg). If they still run it the way they did back then they also give you an informational card when you arrive about an actual passenger on the Titanic and you can go through and talk to people and look at the list of survivors/etc and see who lived, which is weirdly morbid now that I look back on it, but kind of on par for the Titanic and the public consciousness about it.

Rachel, we are patient. Do not stress if a video takes a couple extra days to come out. We are here and waiting for when it is ready.

Ooo, I live in East Tennessee and I drive past the Titanic museum sometimes but I've never been to it. I'm looking forward to that video in particular because maybe it'll be the motivation I need to check it out!
(Also if you're interested there are lots of antiques stores in Sevierville, which is right by Pigeon Forge!)

If you end up doing some patchwork with leftover fabric, just be wary that using different types of fabric can make it tricky. Usually for quilting we use quilting cotton fabrics, sometimes linens and linen blends. Anything synthetic or stretchy is going to make it harder, especially if you do it by machine. Quilting/patchwork can be a nice relaxing craft to do so maybe take your time with it and think of it as a more relaxing/mindful project than something to do really quickly. If you’d rather hand piecing, English paper piecing or American piecing are methods you can try out.
Also, in terms of burn out and content, maybe split the titanic dresses into 2 vids (if that wasn’t already the plan) so you have more content up your sleeve and less pressure to find something to do for the need to release content? Please go easy on yourself and take some breaks for yourself ❤️

By the way, I’m so jealous that you get to go to Dollywood! Dolly Parton is like the coolest lady alive. I don’t think I’ve ever met somebody who did not like her, she’s like irresistible! Unless they don’t know about her, in which case they need to learn about the amazing lady who packs so much punch!

Please don’t get upset with me for feeling the need to share this, especially around this time of year. I feel like this is a safe community that I can share this with and have it be taken as a caring and kind thing for you all and not someone telling you what to do and how to live your life. I just wanted to share something that I feel is worthy of your time, because it has helped me. I care about all of you and it feels like sometimes getting reminded about it, at least in my own life has been extremely helpful.
Getting on my soapbox now.
I also don’t want this to sound like I’m telling you or Rachel or anyone else in this comment section what to do or how to live your life, this is just extremely important for our overall health. In my own experience I didn’t acknowledge or allow myself to think about taking a little bit of time every so often to check in with my body, my emotional state, and my mind about all the stressful and demanding things I was doing in my life and it led to a breakdown that was quite significant. And I didn’t acknowledge it until it really went off the rails for me and my “standing on the gas pedal so hard, for so long” led to a literal breakdown of my mind and body and it happened when I was only 19 (I had just turned 19 5 days before my first pain flare from Endometriosis) in my second semester of college. I triggered a response from the dormant Endometriosis in my system, in my body along with triggering a greatly worsening state of my already severe anxiety and depression which just completely “derail my train” so to speak, “ripped the rug out from under my feet,” etc. you get the point. Our mental, physical, emotional, and even our spiritual health, depends on being okay with acknowledging and addressing stress, feeling overwhelmed, tired, or anxious. And doing something like just taking 3-5 minutes to do breathing exercises or find sometime to go outside and breathe, with nothing in your hands to do or focus on is important to keep us going. (Well, maybe take a tennis ball or frisbee out for our furrbabies who fetch, if you can do that with as much of a blank mind as possible.) But just allow yourself to take a break, reconnect with nature and the feeling of being outside and breathing fresh air (that is hopefully fresh air. I realize not everywhere has super fresh air in all cities- but you get my point). Let your mind go blank, be in the moment, acknowledging how your body feels right then and there, and be mindful and present, don’t think about the future— be it 5 minutes or 3 days from now or even 10 years, don’t think about the past or the “what you SHOULD be doing right now,” JUST BE.
There is a really helpful tool, an app called Insight Timer you can download if you want it’s free (it has tons of breathing exercises or guided meditations, or just ways to listen that help you decompress. And you can find similar stuff on YouTube too). I promise you won’t regret it if you try it, and not just once because it doesn’t work that way, it takes time and practice to get to a point where you’re able to just be. Just like any other muscle you have to work it out, practice it. You can just try to at the very least do breathing exercises even if it’s only for 3-5 minutes each day or at times when you may get too overwhelmed and feel slightly sick/weight on your chest/anxious/ready to scream/whatever way your body and mind demonstrates being overwhelmed and stressed. You don’t need the app’s Plus version, the regular free version of Insight Timer allows you to find whatever you may need.
I am a lot like Rachel at the moment, especially recently my house is literally a tornado of craft stuff and yarn. I cannot sit down and just watch something without actively doing something with my hands like crocheting when not making other stuff or am out going to appointments etc. But it’s really important and that sensation you’re getting in your chest can often build into something worse if it goes unaddressed or ignored. Even choosing to use your indoor workout bike(in Rachel’s case) could help just allowing you to focus away for a short while and breathe where it’s just you and that dang bike, if you don’t have something like that, taking a walk can help too. BE IN THE MOMENT with your body and what it’s feeling, not thinking about all the things you need to get to or are not doing at the moment that you may feel you should be doing instead. I realize, just even getting to that headspace where it all goes blank or slightly quieter from all the demands you may be having on your time and this may seem completely impossible to achieve and it is if we don’t practice doing it often, but it’s worth it. Just like a muscle we must work it out to get to the place or space where you are just doing and thinking about that one thing or thinking about nothing. Turning our brains off is SOOOOOO difficult, but if we put the phone down and possibly away from us like a couple of feet and breathe. We don’t realize it, but this is some of the worst time in our lives(late teens, all of our 20’s and 30’s) to accumulate stress that can then begin a dangerous chain of events if we don’t address it and acknowledge how incredibly important “me time is.”
And I know for so many of us that term, “me time,” feels selfish, like I absolutely hate the term and feeling like I’m being selfish by doing it. It does feel like “I’m not contributing to society in that moment so I must be being super selfish,” and that’s NOT true. You are not being selfish, I promise. It’s practicing self care, your own mental, emotional, and physical health that you just need to remember is important to keep you functioning on all cylinders the rest of the time doing all the work you’re doing. We DO DESERVE TO TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES BECAUSE WE MUST, NOT BECAUSE WE ARE SELFISH. I can tell you first hand, it’s one of the absolute hardest things in the world to do, but we need to do it or we can actually create future health problems that will plague us the rest of our lives.
I will now get off my soapbox here. And tell all of you, I care about you and your health— mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual whatever that may look like and you deserve to be as healthy and happy as much as possible! Live your best life! Do what you want and need to do! ❤️👌🏼You’re worth it!
Sorry for my like public service announcement, for some reason I just felt really compelled to write this out. I hope it is okay that I did.

You got this, Rachel!! Don’t stress too much! Rest is so important and productive even if it doesn’t feel like it!
Also, Patchwork suggestion that is spooky/Christmasy- Sally’s secret pants 🤔

The Rose Project is literally a dream come true for me. I love it.
As an archaeologist, another one would be you doing a photo shoot in Egypt in vintage archaeology outfits ...maybe that could be your trip in March/April 🫢

We will need a bloody good whinge from time to time when our workload feels too much and it doesn’t mean you don’t love what you do and that you’re not appreciative of all you’ve got. X

I got to see one of Rose's dresses (the one she wears in the water) at the James Cameron exhibit back in August at Science World (if you're in the Vancouver BC area, people, it's there until Jan 1 and it's really cool). Like, there's all this stuff in the exhibit about his deep-sea expeditions and samples of isopods from the ocean floor and I was all "dress!"

Hearing you say about how tricky it can be at times actually shows how much of a job content creation is for all the naysayers who just think you futz about with a camera and that it's not hard. If we didn't want to listen we wouldn't be here.
Also the neurospicy part of my brain needs to know where that cardigan is from because I have the same dress and that outfit looked so cosy 🥰

Hey, Rachel - if you can't vent to us, who can you vent to? You remind me of my creative granddaughter (she's 20), when she's in the kitchen baking and cooking for the whole family, which she loves to do, but she stresses the whole time, and it always turns out great! Stressing just means you are really paying attention to all the details, and putting your best into your projects, and I always love the results - so creative! So Chaos On!

oh heck yeah!!! i've been to the titanic museum and it's really really cool. besides just looking awesome it's also really informational. they have actual relics from the titanic. i'd love to go back someday. it's such a wild thing to have in tennessee lol i always love when people talk about it. the gatlinburg area also has a really wonderful arts & crafts community i highly recommend checking out. there's a whole loop you can drive with a soda fountain and silly little shops and an antique store cat n stuff. very delightful, i love that area. also a patchwork cloak would be SO cool!!

Absolutely feeling the next week will be better vibes too. 😅 Any content you do, big or small, is always great and even just these chatting videos brighten the day. I don't know if it would be more or less work, but breaking up big projects across a couple videos would still be enjoyable to watch in my opinion. Hope you get some time to breathe and recharge! Have fun at Dollywood!

As a content creator myself, I hear you and I feel you lol It's seems like your always working. Is Nick going with you to any of the comic cons? Could he record you there so you can have that footage and use that as a video? Also, Tom Maryland in Wheel of time has a patch work coat and it's amazing. I don't know if that's your thing but it's the first thing I thought of.

Hi Rachel! Love your content. I'm sure someone has already told you this and you may have considered it but I just wanted to share with you my experience. I have always struggled with stressed and anxiety, I am always thinking about things that have to be done and that I have to do. I also have a stressful job so it doesn't help. But I have being going to therapy for the last year, having a call once a month, and it has helped me a lot. It doesn't mean you will have less work or less stressful situation but talking about it in therapy does help to see things differently and learn to deal with the stress so it doesn't lead to anxiety. I hope your projects and plans go smoothly. It gets better <3

I’m so excited to see the puppet, and the Rose dress, and honestly everything you mentioned 🩵 Would a year-in-review looking back at your favorite projects of 2023 be an easy to make “filler” video? I don’t know how those types of videos perform, but they always seem fun to me 😄

Loved this update!! Maybe not this year cause you sound hella busy, but next year I would love to see you decorate a spooky gothic Christine McConnell type Xmas tree. I’m not really a Christmas aesthetic person either and I’m trying to find something to love about the month of a December 😅. Take care of yourself!

I hope you have fun at dollywood!! I grew up going there as a kid and it was so much fun. they also have dolly’s Dixie stampede in pigeon forge by the titanic museum that’s a fun dinner idea!
try to pace yourself and not get so overwhelmed by thinking about everything you end up freezing (: scheduling specific rest time so you’re not worrying about everything you need to do while resting works well for me 💛

Burnout is so hard! Do what you need to alleviate the stress, even if that means taking some time off. I'm always so eager for your videos but I'd much rather you take care of yourself! We'll still be here :) Also, I am SO EXCITED for these projects! The cat sounds freakin' adorable, and I love the idea of a patchwork cloak.

I agree with Ashley, we're here for whatever you want to post, Rachel! Quilting is the main way I use up all my scraps, that or making little decorations. There are a couple of really simple but cute Christmas decorations (I'm not into the holiday either, but my kids love making them) that could be cute and easy to make while not being overly stressful and still kinda old-school cottage core. I could DM you patterns and instructions if you like? Or you could do another chill and paint with me video like you did a while back? Have a picnic and paint-with-me? Those are always chill and nice! Hope your stress stays manageable for you! <3 All the love and good hype feels!

This video is so relatable. 🥲 As a creative it's like your brain is an overflowing font of ideas and inspiration, so it's always so hard to know when it's okay to take a break. Scheduling rest sounds so insane, but it's sometimes the only time you actually get to!! We're all very excited for your content, as always, but we also love knowing you are happy and taking care of yourself!!
