I will agree to disagree, Just clarifying I’m not offended. I just cuss a lot. You could almost say you’re an academic.

I think we're going to just have to agree to disagree. I don't think I was being an overt dick about anything, and you do sound upset and maybe personally offended. I apologize for offending you, but I really think it helps to take opinions I express with a grain of salt. I'm not creating a religion here, I'm just shooting from the hip, and I usually expect people to take it that way. I'm not shitting on people who use field guides. I own field guides. I'm merely expressing the point that going outside and immersing yourself in things while simultaneously thinking about the material and writing down questions one might have is the best way to learn. My experience with field guides is that a single 2-dimensional photograph of questionable quality is often not enough to teach somebody to identify a plant, nor do field guides usually teach synapomorphies of plant families, and knowing traits of a family is really key to identification, to being able to place that thing you're looking at in a certain family, etc. Again, sorry I offended you.

I’m not upset. I think you are being a dick about it. Some people have to learn from fucking field guides and take boring ass classes to learn. You just taught a class which I thoroughly enjoyed. Academia is not your problem. It’s capitalism. You touched on this in the professor Dave pod.

Zeebes

You're upset bc I frequently shit on American academia or you're upset because I have academics on the podcast? Kyle is younger than I am. He's not a stuffy old guy. I have no clue what you're really upset about here. I'm just trying to understand

Anthony J Malone

You're going in like 4 different directions here. I'm confused as to what's upsetting you. Can you clarify please?

Anthony J Malone

I don’t care about college. I guess ultimately my point is you have a lot of stuffy ass old dudes who are likely over educated and overpaid on your podcast to be so blunt about it. As a big fan of yours, it’s a thorn in my side. Like dude I wanna hear about fucking snakes bro.

Zeebes

My point : it would be silly to take my comments personally, as if they're directed at anybody who went to college (which includes myself, ironically), as opposed to a complicated critique of the higher education system itself. I'm well aware that things are this way, but don't have to be, which is why this issue is such a thorn in my ass and why I'll probably never quit bitching about it, and similarly why I'll never quit bitching about our broken healthcare system, as well.

Anthony J Malone

"Academia sucks" is all that you've gotten out of my repeated rants on this subject? Sounds like the issue might be more one of personal offense than it is of actually listening to the message. I remember my message being a lot more complicated and eloquent than that. I think learning in a structured setting is fantastic. I think the way that America does it, turning it into a heavily commodified phenomenon that requires years of subsequent debt or family connections, mixed with the toxic concoction of ego and status that sometimes taints true passion for knowledge is the problem. Not school-learning as opposed to autodidacticism, not to mention the fact that American society doesn't respect science unless it produces a sellable result, which is where the name of the podcast and YouTube itself came from..

Anthony J Malone

Meaning I got 23 minutes in and you hadn’t gotten past academia sucks. I really think you need to get over that. You’re literally shitting on your guests school/career choices live. If I’ve learned something from plants, it’s that we’re all just working with the cards that were dealt.

Zeebes

Damn my wife was like when is this dude gonna talk about snakes! 😂
