Updates, Photo Albums, Etc
Added 2024-01-12 15:59:37 +0000 UTCHey all,
I don't have any travel planned for the next six months, as I'm in the process of writing two books, a process that is both daunting and maddening. As such, I've taken it easy on posting to instagram and making videos (for the most part) for the next month or two. We've been recording voice-overs for Kill Your Lawn season 2, which should be released on EArthX in April (though of course, nobody can watch since the network sold the show to cable. Become proficient in downloading torrents, I suppose).
The Crime Pays Book should be done by April and will be released in 2025. It will have over 400 photos of various plants from around the world in it, as well as an autobiography and explanation of how I got into all this stuff, with some nice crash courses in plant identification in it.
I will be in San Diego on February 17th for the "Entheogen Expo" which sounds kind of like a psychedelic drug-bro event but they're paying me, and my friend Alan Rockefeller will be there, as well, and maybe I'll be able to sneak a visit to Baja California, as well, which is a landscape that I love dearly and where I learned quite a bit of botany before I was even making videos.
In the meantime, I'd love to start doing little podcast "mini-classes" on subjects such as geology, plant evolution, etc when I can find the time and focus. Anything else you guys would like to see on here or on the channel, please comment below. I've also thought about uploading photo albums from some of the places that I've visited. I've got probably 500 gb of photos that nobody has seen yet.
Learning about plants and ecosystems is a great way to transport our asses out of the boring, dystopian consumer reality into which we are all descending. Those places are the fabric of the "real world" as I've always referred to it. Anything I can do to help people reach an appreciation or understanding of those places is worth it to me.

I always love seeing photos of plants. That's all my Facebook and Instagram are. Definitely going to buy your book, I love what you're doing. Good luck with the writing. When I wrote my thesis it ended up being around 300 pages, and I had less than 6 months to do it. I would rather have a fucking lobotomy over doing it again. 🙄. So in a way, i feel ya. In the mean time you could start a bunch of seeds. I have about 4k cactus seeds I need to sow. Not enough room. LOL.

2024-04-04 00:53:18 +0000 UTCDid you know soils have names beyond the O, A, E, B, etc. soil layers? Really wacky ones, like Uptipsaments, Uttar Pradesh, Bareillly, etc.

2024-02-23 06:48:28 +0000 UTCI would love more upkeep videos for native cacti and wildflowers/trees/shrubs/ vines here in TX. I just got 24 species of native seeds for the year and every time I see new plant maintenance videos I always learn something new and encouraging

2024-02-19 10:38:01 +0000 UTCA mini lesson on the biology of wetland plants would be killer. What keeps wetland plants from rotting, defense against microbial life, and their importance to the stability and structure of soil, etc. Really whatever tickles your fancy hehe.

2024-02-02 04:01:57 +0000 UTCWanted to second hearing more about soil biology. I've only just recently dropped the preconceived notion that earthworms are inherently good for plant life, and in fact a detriment to natives where I live. Also have read native plants can have an impact on invasive species like the Japanese beetle, being a poor food source for them in the larval stage (I would fact check that though). My point being it seems like there is a lot to gain from learning more about those kinds of relationships.

2024-01-17 19:07:44 +0000 UTCLike the many above mentioned I'm excited for the mini classes!!! As well as the book, I hope you have autographed copies of it. You have been a great inspiration to me and thousands of others, keep doing you and we all will support you!!!!

2024-01-15 13:09:16 +0000 UTCLooking forward to mini classes! When you have time to travel again you have to make it to the lake wales ridge. I’m down here botanizing right now and it’s absolutely incredible, lots of endemics.

2024-01-14 00:14:30 +0000 UTCLoving the content and stoked to see the book and new KYL episodes. As an Australian living in Scotland I must admit I struggle to get super excited about the local flora. The Oakwood's are awesome but the vast majority of the country has been terraformed by the "Death cult". One component of the flora that is supercool and interesting is the Lichens, Bryophytes and Mosses (Fungal diversity is pretty good too). It would be supercool to see you head to a northern latitude and do a deep dive on Lichens and Mosses. Even better, come in winter so we can watch you suffer like the rest of us schmucks up here (sorry not sorry) PS; the gardens up here suck ass big time. Same 10 plants in almost every yard; Privet hedge, Rhododendron, Mahonia, Japanese Maple, a couple of dwarf yellow Cypress, Hosta and lawn with a neat trimmed edge, worst of all, the bare soil is raked over weekly to stop the moss..... No mulch. It's insane! In 2026 KYL needs to go global, first stop Scotland

2024-01-13 14:55:57 +0000 UTCMore ideas for what to do botany-wise during the long and depressing winter (in my case in central Europe)

2024-01-13 08:25:05 +0000 UTCThe mini-classes sound awesome. It would be cool if you could post a reading assignment/text excerpt/chapter to go along with the episode(s). Congrats on all the big new stuff you have going on!

2024-01-13 03:35:49 +0000 UTCMore geology lessons would be great, but I might be lost w/o visuals. It would be cool to hear you have some conversations with some soil scientists as well. I've read a bit on soil food web systems, but mostly in regards to gardening/food production. Would be cool to hear more about how soil biology differs due to geological factors that allow specialized plants to grow. Excited about the book and the show I can't watch.

2024-01-12 18:39:33 +0000 UTCI hope you will have the time to make short segments about growing native plants from seed and their various stratification requirements. Looking forward to all of this, Joey! You're a hella busy guy!

2024-01-12 16:40:21 +0000 UTCHi guys I just wanted to give you a bit of info that’s been very helpful in my botanical journey. It’s the “wildflowers” app. Go to google play/ the App Store and type in your state then wildflowers. It’s an open source/ free app that will list most of the species around you. It’s very straightforward and I think it will help a lot of noobs like me!
