Pubescent seems to apply to anything generally hairy... tomentose being wooly, closely knit fuzz (often obscuring the surface of the plant), and scabrid is usually a sandpaper texture regardless if its cause by hairs, bumps(?) or scales or whatever. They sometimes feel like they're interchanged in guidebooks and floras but I think these are good general definitions to go by. Hope that helped!

Thanks again for what you do, Tony. I have a question for you or one of you more pedantic botanical terminology rascals. Is there a difference in botanical meaning of the terms: pubescent, tomentose, scabrid, fuzzy, etc.?
I had a Beucarnia for 25 years, and I had to give it to greenhouse at the local Community college because it just got too big. That was fifteen years ago, and now it's HUGE!
