Do I need a goddamned Gimbal? Your feedback appreciated.

I never watch my own videos but I was watching some of the recent ones to see how the drone footage came out and it pissed me off how shaky they are. I guess I never realized it bc I never watch these on a full screen (I didn't own a TV until a few months ago) but holy hell do I need some stabilizing.

Would a gimbal help?
How obnoxious and annoying have you found the video quality in the stuff I put out?

Thanks in advance. Prick.

Little late on this but I’d say you dont need a gimbal, I’ve never found your footage to be particularly shaky or anything. I think that if anything, a microscope with a camera would be a great addition to what you’re doing. I agree with everyone else that the drone footage has been cool for establishing a broad picture.

Uncle Curse

I agree with others who think your video quality if fine. I DO like seeing the perspective from the drone.

Debra Witter

Really like the extra drone footage, but the video is stable enough. Gives you more of a "being there" feel instead of just hovering over the rocks. So go buy 100 coffees instead of the gimbal (unless anyone here has a spare gimbal to gift away)

Paul

Basically was going to say what everyone else said: looks fine, appreciate the extra bird's eye view for context.

Jayme Seehafer

Don't fix what ain't broke ya bilge pump.

Uncanny Valley Woods

Another member of team Skip the Gimbal. If you lug around more shit, the videos won't be as spontaneous. It's fine as is.

I think your videos look fine, ya prick.

April Hughes

Smooth & coherent to me, no real shakiness detected & I am flying MONOCULAR! As in -->looking for overlap & shadows w/ halos/rays/silhouettes & wtf'n s**t in half of my natural visual circumference. I do still have one cataract surgery to go (afford). I already have a passion for.... all living and dead by sport or vehicle ...roadkill ( i.e.Fl. Puma?!death and birth rate near = 55mph was fine on Tamiami/US41)and love for any wildlife which is surviving the human onslaught of Florida (most negtvly affected state) ...yeah go back n take out perv/devlpr W. Ditsney for putting Fl. on map and all the universities still working on GD TURFGRASS! Golf and football? No, I am into Myakka, Thonotosassa and Chassahowitzka's church of EARTH🌏 🌞🌜🐝🐾🪶😁🤙

A gimbal would help a lot with small shit tbh. I don't think it would detract from the rough feeling of your videos considering your mouth and that you wouldnt need to use it all the time

Penis Charles

Another, "Your videos are great as is." You get good shots of all the important stuff you want us to see to teach us things.

Clayton Grey

exactly

More like jabber-walking amiright?!

Rich Saber

I always found the appeal of your videos being a rough, easy to access style. Don't feel like you need to polish up the quality. I know I'm happy with the videos

Bep

Then you can gyre and gimbal in the wabe.

Bigfoot Is Right Outside

I watch your stuff on an iPad and it looks great on that. The drone material is really welcome. It gives a good broad context to then get down close and intimate. There’s a guy called Eric running a sailing YouTube channel called No Bullshit Just Sailing who flies a drone from his sail boat around islands in the North Atlantic is you want to get inspired.

Les

I think the drone footage has been really helpful with the location and geologic context. I especially enjoyed the shot of the rainbow you got in the latest peyote video. I never noticed the shakiness, but I am also not watching these on a television. However, I did feel like the frequent panning was unnecessary and/or distracting. Otherwise, I really enjoy the drone shots, and I think it's cool that you are adding some music to them. It is always interesting to hear what you are listening to.

James

Overall, no, I don't think you need to do anything differently as far as the camerawork goes.

Didn't notice/wasn't annoying.

It's just one more thing you have to worry about. Your not making a travelogue. They often tend to fix on one object and are it takes time tom change their focus( object it's keying on). They're like a hyperfocused ADHD person, like you, except its focus is not shared by you. Now a small tripod would be useful when trying for closeups as you can hold the object still with your free hands instead of the wind blowing objects around.

Frank Tippin

No, I don't think it's necessary

Your drone footage is better then mine, which is NONE! I enjoy all the videos, I mean you're not Scorsese or anything. But I do not watch for the cinematic quality. You're doing great shit, prick!

Dana Gibson

I've never noticed a problem, but I'm usually pretty focused on the plants :)

Didn't notice.

Linus Lancaster

Quality is fine for me. I cast them to a TV and enjoy it. Seems like your gear and photography skills have improved some of the focus issues that you've struggled with in older work, as well. I'm liking the vids.

I watch almost exclusively on my TV and, granted, I'm way behind on CPBBD videos, but I'm pretty sensitive to bad camera work and I've never had a problem with your videos.

Circuitmike

No.

thinking further on it as long as it successfully serves the purpose you intended it to, which from what I've seen so far is to give the rest of the video geological context. I wouldn't worry too much about it. the most important part is capturing the details that are important to conveying the information you're trying to convey. like when you're trying to show a close up of the flower parts, if it's too blurry, the camera is too shaky, or you don't hold on it for enough frames then you may as well not have done it. some of those things you can fix afterwards but other things you can't and if you just traveled half-way around the world to get the footage, then that's a huge financial loss, but if there is a simple tool that you could have had to prevent that then it makes sense to get that tool. but if all you're talking about is aesthetics and it's otherwise not going to affect your viewership then why spend money on it? on the other hand if it's going to save you editing time to not have to run it through a stabilization process before you work on it, then that's the same thing in a different way.

Better&Better

I am not bothered at all by the hand held quality of your excellent videography. Don't change a thing!!

Sherry Newman

fuck no...i want milk shakes

I don't think you NEED one. honestly I was thinking it's pretty good for somebody who just started using a drone. I only ever watch them on my tablet, but I know my father watches it on a widescreen monitor. personally from what I'm seeing I wouldn't worry about it, but if you wanted to test it out you can probably rent one for a couple hours and post some bonus footage here. I like that you use your patreon for that. for that matter, if you accidentally say shit you think goes too far for YouTube you can post those versions here. that's the whole reason I started supporting people I like on patreon. I don't want them to feel like they have to conform to what an algorithm or advertiser wants. my goal is to get the creators I like to a point where they can drop those advertising based services and sponsors, and I think that should be the goals of creators anyway. build your following to a point where you can drop all that bullshit and do what you want. you'd still want to post regularly enough on those platforms but those platforms shouldn't be what defines your content. especially you where a lot of your content is supposed to be educational and scientific in nature. the last thing you would want is to have to avoid talking about something because it might not be "ad/algorithm friendly"

Better&Better

Depends on what you want. Your viewers appreciate what you are doing now. 'Live' is never as smooth as pre-recorded and polished. It shouldn't be, that's part of the experience. If every recorded presentation has to look as polished and practiced as a Ted talk, we are all fucked.

Janis Farmer

I always thought the shakiness made it real. It's just some guy doing his shit out in the field. But seriously, I don't think your viewers notice/care about it as much as what you probably do.
