Ebony (and those fretboards) comes from the same family as Persimmon, the Ebenaceae, from tropical trees in the genus Diospyros. The tree mentioned in this video Guaiacum angustifolium has incredibly dense wood that sinks in water. A close relative from South Florida and the Caribbean, Guaiacum sanctum, was harvested to close to extinction because of the self-lubricating nature of the wood, which made it great for propeller shafts on boats, and also because there was a belief that a decoction would cure syphilis.
