Look Into My Megastrobilus

A great day spent out at the Burney Mountain Baker Cypress Grove, studying fire ecology of this rare tree and taking an up close look at how members of the redwood family get pollinated (hint : it's wind, of course), but goddamn the immature female cones of this species are tiny.

Hey there! I grew up in DuPage Co. Your description is accurate. The town I grew up in, Lombard, is lilac HQ. They have Lilacia Park, the Lilac Parade, etc. When I was a kid, the garbage trucks were painted lilac and white. I escaped DuPage at 17 and moved to Hollywood, CA. Hollywood was most definitely more fun.

Do you think you will ever do a video on conifer propagation? I believe I am pretty good at growing all sorts of plants from seed but I routinely fail with conifers. If I don't loose them to damping off then they will still die within a year or two and I have no idea why...

Ok thanks. I'm out in the cornfields of DeKalb. Maybe I'll get impulsive and give it a try. I just hate to fuck it up and waste seeds.

Depends on what climate you are in. They need a few weeks cold wet stratification then come up like weeds. They are prone to "damping off" fungal attack when young. The way around this is to increase aeration and water from the bottom of the pot using a tray, leaving the soil surface dry

How easy/difficult is it to germinate and grow Baker Cypress from seed?

Amazing, and here I am not able to tell a spruce from a fir. The bit about how the lack of fire causes the cypress not to thrive due to being shade out was really interesting.
