/Ruin - A Ritual of Self
Added 2025-07-18 02:29:13 +0000 UTCThis was a fun Project inspired by the movie Bring Her Back. They had a cool VHS ritual video that was pretty creepy and it gave me some Ideas. I wanted to use candle light, and create a circle made of salt. I bought a cool looking bowl for water - Candles for fire - Dried up roses I had from another shoot for Earth. I read somewhere that sometimes certain pagan religions use the sacrificial knife to represent Air. The idea was that this person goes through this ritual within the circle, touching each of the elements. She then carves a symbol into her flesh in which to bleed out the version of herself she doesn't want anymore. But it manifests into several broken versions of herself which surround her, and the ritual fails.
I want to create a part two of this where she is possibly in a limbo version of the ritual room consumed in darkness, stuck holding herself in regret, or something like that.
I shot the entire thing in landscape on my 35mm lens because I wanted it to feel like a scene from a film. I love the way the lighting turned out for being shot entirely in my basement.
