As a model, I think its good practice to bring someone with you when meeting someone new. If the photographer has issues with it, then it sends the wrong message and is usually a red flag. You should be careful with who you work with. And as a photographer, I feel that you need to create a safe and professional environment to work in and respect the people you work with.
