August store release is ready
Added 2022-08-10 05:38:29 +0000 UTCI'm working on putting together the full image for August. For those that have the May release, which is the last full image release, below is a way to update to the August release without having to reimage your pi:
1. Open your DynaFramePro, on phone, tablet, or desktop, through your browser.
2. Choose Store
3. Enter the code piAug0db0c6b and hit the checkmark
4. Wait for 15-20 minutes
To confirm the download has completed, check the playlist tab and look for a playlist called 'dfupdate'.
Restart the Pi.
If it all works, after reboot when you check the web UI, go to the 'log' page and at the top look for: Build: 0db0c6b
You should also see the 'experimental' portion on the sidebar.
If you hit any issues please let me know. I'm working on a full image as well, but this is going to be the preferred way to update in the future (we have added progress bars and a button to make it even simpler for future updates).
The benefit of a web update is your settings, playlists, and content and NAS settings will all be retained.
Some FAQs/Tips:
1: If you double-click the filename above, watch out for the trailing blank space, make sure you don't include that when downloading.
2: If you type it in by hand, pay attention to the upper/lower case of all the letters, pi is really picky about that.
3: When coming from May_Patreon this is really silent process, and you need to stay on the store page for a long time, so if your first pass doesn't go well go again and let it sit and grind for 15-20 min before checking in on the Playlists page.
4: When coming from a beta with the download bar, you still need about 2-5 min after download complete for it to unzip and move the files.
New features:
- Experimental tab - You can now play youtube videos directly to the frame. Try it with your favorite streaming service...it supports hundreds. Please keep in mind the videos must be publically accessible, but youtube, vimeo, and facebook have all worked for me
- Play full videos, repeat short videos and video zoom are all working
- Playlist enhancements to be more responsive
- Discreet on/off buttons to make controlling the screen less of a 'guess'
- Performance fixes
- APIs are now documented in the instructions section. If you're doing home automation or want to code against it, this is for you. You can now write seperate apps or automations to control the frame...not just settings but actually sending web images or video directly to it!
Whats next:
- We are going to watch what the reception of this build is carefully. We want to work on making the experience clean and fix any bugs that shake out from the massive amount of code we churned. While that feedback comes in we're planning the plugin work as well as revisiting the 'first run' experience. The way we setup wifi or networking seems to cause the most issues, and when something is hard to setup, it ruins the experience and fun. We hear the feedback there and want to work on making that easier and more reliable.
Comments
Yeah, turns out wifi infrastructure differences are a heck of a thing to support. On many setups when things line up it's beautiful, but we found out that once something goes sideways it's not good. Also it's the one piece of this where we built on another codebase so the integration isn't as seamless. Due to the frustration we are frontloading investigating a better way to do 'first setup'. We avoided using a keyboard on the board but the trouble isn't worth it. Also the software we build on (comitup) removes the default 'pi' way of setting up networking. We have a beta in the discord of a 'netkill' command to remove the comitup stuff so you can just do wifi connection in the pi UI if you wish. Please jump in the discord and message Qwksilver and he can set you up, he just got it running last night. I'm working on an image for this build which may also fix it (we had some ip issues in the infobar that I fixed). We hear the feedback and are working on a better way to go about it, and one that we can control the experience more to bring it up to our bar. I'm sorry to hear you hit this issue, we'll get it fixed.
