Todoroki is best boy and the mangaka said he was originally supposed to win the sports festival and beat Bakugo, but he changed his mind last second because he felt like it would not be realistic if Todoroki's unsureness and hesitation from using his fire side is all gone because of a few nice words from a friend. That aren't gonna undo like years and years of abuse all at once, Deku made him forget about his father for a match but hes not gonna suddenly just be okay with using his fire. So yeah it was pretty much confirmed that in a fight where Todoroki went all out, no way Bakugo would have won.

That moment with deku v todoroki is still up there with the best moments in this show imo. In anime period, its gotta be pretty high up there for the last decade for me. Second half of this season has even more peak, and dw the show is most definitely just getting started

(Preemptive 'sorry' for the long comment, this is just my favorite favorite season of pretty much all anime to talk about) Ah yes, season 2, where the animators hated Bakugou lol. Despite him looking like a freak in every frame, this school festival arc was where I really really started to appreciate him as a character and what he stood for. There is something so extremely heartbreaking to me about someone doing his best to BE the best but keeps falling short of his potential because his best (highest power) is currently higher than anyone else near him can reach (because they have physical (deku) or mental (todoroki) blocks). And the frustration that comes with that, that he tries to express but people keep ignoring and basically saying "you won so who cares, that's all that matters" without listening to him and WHY there's so much more that matters. Idk I just really really started to relate to his character this arc and realized why he felt the way he felt. Also I will never shut up about how smart is was to have the bakugou, todoroki, and deku win at the categories they're most powerful at, power, strategy, and ingenuity, respectively. SO smart and satisfying. Also to round out a thought I have, I think Bakugou still would have won even if Todoroki had used his flames, because Bakugou seemingly specifically made that special move to basically extinguish todoroki's flames/turn them against him in that vortex (I think)
