BONUS EPISODE: Pink Floyd's "The Wall"

"This is a basically unintelligible movie where things that I don't understand happen for an hour and a half." Michael Ian Black, VH1's I Love the '80s

Anyway, we do our best with Pink Floyd's masterpiece album and somewhat well liked movie "The Wall." Fair warning: We might need an education

In the Not Like Us video, Todd talked about poptimism basically just meaning “the gays like it.” I feel like that’s kinda also true of classic rock that is still relevant. Queen, Bowie, Prince, Fleetwood Mac (via Stevie)

What bothers me the most about his "school's hard take is" how Doug says "there are no good teachers" is supposedly the take of another brick in the wall pt 2, and in the movie (I think it's in happiest days of our lives) but anyway it's opening with "when we were young... there were CERTAIN teachers." so not all of them just certain ones that were the issue. So basically just paying attention might have helped him have better takes.

As an 80's teen I loathed Pink Floyd for being overwrought and full of shameless adolescent angst. Bear in mind there was no internet for learning about bands and albums. Over time I understood them better and even enjoy dance productions to Dark Side Of The Moon. Now, a recent episode's comment from Lina is the ONLY reason I'm aware of Doug Walker and Wall review. The biggest shock was his takes were exactly mine as an unaware teenager, ie. "boo hoo school is hard." But he's a grown man with AN ENTIRE INTERNET. He could have researched even just the album's Wikipedia page. Somehow he produced his entire video parody songs and everything without knowing a damn thing about the album. Maybe James Somerton set the bar too low for at least not making things up.

Never do parlays kids, that's how they getcha.

Haven't listened yet. Putting the over-under line at 3.5 Channel Awesome references, taking the over, & parlaying that with a prop bet that the first one happens between the 7 & 12 minute mark.

Don't be too hard on yourself, no one really knew any better. That era of the internet really was the wild west of "see what sticks" on the internet and Doug capitalized on that and found success. Looking back, It wasnt very well executed, it insists on alot of forced memes and he has a perplexing perspective of what humor is and can be. Hindsight is always 20-20.

Are there that many review podcasters/vloggers who are so great that their episodes have genuine replay value? The only review episodes I keep revisiting are Todd‘s One Hit Wonderlands. From everything I know about Doug Walker he comes across as a knob, to be sure.

Hey, if I joined the $20 tier on Patreon just so I could put “Wizard of Oz synced up to Dark Side of the Moon” on a poll, would people vote for it?

I was watching his stuff still for a while. Not everything, but I’d watch the commercial episodes (honestly, I still do only because I don’t have something comparable to replace them with. I’ll happily take any suggestions!) or stuff like the Fox Kids or Disney Saturday Morning episodes. But then I saw that he reviewed The Wall, and I had such a visceral “wow, I REALLY don’t give a shit about what this guy would have to say about The Wall” that it was the lightbulb moment for me. Like I realized “I wouldn’t have this negative a reaction about something that I liked…”

It's weird how a review can just be putting in some context and saying what worked for you and what didn't and that's it. No one had to sing the Spongebob Theme.

Don't sync Dark Side Of The Moon with The Wizard Of Oz - sync it with The Force Awakens. Start the album the instant you see the opening text disappear, and loop it three times so it covers the whole movie.

I remember watching his stuff. And like for a while I would put his new episodes on and then have a nap and never bothered revisiting the episode and then I was like why do I bother? And then stopped. So erm my point is I guess sometimes we keep to a thing cause we just did it for a while and its hard to get out of that rhythm

Birthe_bird

I wonder if Todd even remembers that he planted the seeds for Doug to review The Wall in their Wiz crossover

It's ironic that Lina is talking about this film now, because a few days ago, I walked into Forbidden Planet where she once worked, and they were playing the album in its entirety.

Man… why did I think the Nostalgia Critic was funny even up to a point where I should’ve stopped watching him a long time ago

Connor Rankin

Thank you. This was a good New Year's gift.
