great movie, great episode! although i did find couple of choices made with regards to the russian cellist to be a tad weird. what sort of goofy cult does one grow up to be going on march 8th to clara zetkin's grave to place flowers or whatever. ppl care abt zetkin as much as about 'baku commissars' or 'karl liebknecht' or any other stuff that streets are named after - not much at all... and i would imagine classical music people dont call music pieces a 'song' in front of one's own conductor. but great accent work fs (also while watching it cant help thinking about the bonkers pay disparity between orchestra musicians and the fucking conductor) (plus there are some great reviews to enjoy such as ah i wish genius lydia tar owned woke snoflakes at my liberal arts college <3)

2024-05-22 12:04:49 +0000 UTCI've worked in a nerdy industry in an intern fashion, and nothing has made me just stick with a day job and occasional freelance, "hey, you were the only guy who cared about this, right?" work more. You are either the "cool" person/person who got in the ground floor, or the person who does a ton of work making the cool people look good. And being the socially awkward guy from Nebraska who wasnt up to grindstoning 60+ hours for next to nothing without anyone telling me what I'm supposed to be doing didn't get me anywhere. The "cool" person who vouched for me didn't think I helped them much, and dumped me into literal storage closet with a breaking down computer that I needed to restart four times just running Word and internet access. And I sure as hell wasn't the other cool peoples' person. Saved them from getting into a scandal and did emergency work I was promised extra pay I never got, but what did THAT matter? The only cred I ever got is when you went out for drinks with the mid-level people and went, "I'm not crazy and stupid, right?" "NO NO! You just got in a bad situation." And they're the ones who sent scraps when I was unemployed, and I'm grateful for them even though NOBODY in the industry knew who they were or respects them, and they were the FIRST people fired when stuff started collapsing. The "cool" person who was beloved later killed themselves even supposably being surrounded by people who he was their most important person. So I understand Alina's feelings about stuff like this where you either have to be a REALLY good fake or a massive tool.
