Well not the dawn exactly but the dawn of alt-rock as we knew it in the '90s began in the late '80s, and in particular two dissonant bands who loved feedback and quiet loud choruses. Name which one you love more, "Teen Age Riot" by Sonic Youth or "Where Is My Mind" by The Pixies!

Part of me wants to go agains sonic youth for the amount of strings I broke trying to get their weird tunings, but if I think more seriously about it... Where is my mind is simply a better song

2024-03-27 13:39:43 +0000 UTCI have a bone to pick with Teen Age Riot. When I was first getting into underground music, I was recommended Daydream Nation by a couple places. When I started listening, I immediately bounced off hearing Kim Gordon monologuing over the 80s-alt-rock intro. To my teenage brain, it just didn't live up to the pioneering noise rock reputation. I tried again a few times over the next few years and was deflected every time, until one day, when the actual song started just I was about to click off, after which I spent the next 68 minutes fuming at myself. Daydream Nation may very well now be my favorite album. Don't judge an album by its first 30 seconds kids.
