The finale to the one year-ish anniversary of The Rest of Our Lives.
Part 3: What could have been.
“What if?” Every project has that question as the dreams of your mind and the reality of making the project clash.
With The Rest of Our Lives, what could have happened is probably best lost in time but unlucky for you, it’s been about a year since the project’s release and I’m feeling a little nostalgic.
Prepare yourself for something I’ve only told two other people before.
My plan for the second half of The Rest of Lives was to switch the story from “Pride and Prejudice” to “I am Legend”.
Not like the movie “I am Legend”, the book version. I’ve read it multiple times and like to think I understand its themes a little bit better than say… the movies that get released based on it. It’s a little pretentious sounding yes but come on, read the book and watch the 2007 movie. Let’s be pretentious together about it and defend a good book.
If you have the game or played it and have a decent memory, I want you to look at the background images carefully. I know they’re not great, just bear with me a little.
Ask yourself two questions. “Why are they so cramped looking?” and “How come the outdoor scenes don’t have a sky?”
It’s because they live in a bunker underground.
The infamous “white box” background originally was designed to have an elevator in it. Liz and Derby were to find that room while trying to find Linda and then the player is given the first choice of the game. Ride the elevator and discover the truth or run away and continue to live in a world that doesn’t feel right.
The run away option is the current ending. Stay in the vault, get married and the two just continue to live in the fantasy world for the rest of their lives.
Leaving the vault, reveals that the game is set in the future where a disease has nearly wiped out all of humanity. The ones that didn’t get infected created and fled to vaults where they live The Village style in whatever theme they want. Liz and Derby were from a rich people vault that wanted to pretend they were back in Edwardian times.
The story would revolve around these two young people, thrust into a world they are unprepared for, trying to survive despite having no marketable skills they actually need. But, you know, in a less hit you over the head with the metaphor way haha
Their relationship would continue to grow and evolve around trying to find their place despite both being more Alpha personalities. Essentially they learn to stop stepping on each other’s toes and just take the lead for specific things. Liz is good at A so Derby focuses on B. Stuff like that.
The I am Legend stuff kicks in where they come across some feral vampires and they need to survive at night and hunt them through the day until eventually, they get the attention of a society of (for lack of better word) functional vampires who are pissed off because Liz and Derby had been killing non ferals during their hunt too.
I think there were 4 endings that can sprout off from here. I can’t find my notes so it’s all just memory stuff. This is where the 2nd of the game would be.
1. Derby and Liz can feel guilty that they were murdering innocents and realise what they have slowly been becoming and submit themselves to the vampire’s justice. Being put to death in the town square as a fearful crowd watches on.
2. Derby and Liz try to flee but Derby is injured and dies back at their hideout in front of Liz. Liz in her grief doesn’t want to keep living in the shithole world on her own and tracks down the vampires to sacrifice herself.
She is saved by Derby who returns as a vampire and Derby is about to beat back the vampire chief and the fate of the vampires is decided in choice number 3.
1. The vampires agree to stop hunting them as long as Derby and Liz leave the area for good.
2. Derby can demand that the vampire villagers leave their land behind and Derby and Liz use the village as their new house
3. Derby and Liz can full blown just murder them all and be done with it.
And that was the fever dream plot I was going to put into my pron game. Somewhere out there is an alternate universe where people jerk off to vampire versions of Derby and Liz getting it on.
Whether that’s a good thing or not… I’ll leave it up to you.
Thank you for reading. It was a lot of fun to go back and dig deeper into an old idea of mine and poke a little fun at it. When My Catgirl Maid… progresses a little further I’ll start doing a chapter to chapter breakdown of it.
Thanks again.
