2025-02-19 15:13:02 +0000 UTCQueen Charlotte is amazing! I went into with really no expectations cause I was more interested in season 3 of Bridgerton than a spin off. It surprised me in a good way, I ended up completely loving it and I’m glad they made it!

2025-02-16 14:32:42 +0000 UTCnot to make everyone sadder but if you notice the dress styles are quite different back when the queen and lady danbury were younger very much large and in charge very extravagant ball gowns, but flash forward to bridgerton timeline you can see the style is much more modest and lowkey, BUTTT like brimsley says the queen is frozen so even all those years later rather than being in fashion she still wears the big gowns she wore when she met the king she will always be HIS queen

2025-02-15 05:53:10 +0000 UTCI know a lot of people are discussing the possibility of George’s illness being psychiatric, bipolar etc. Obviously, we are never going to know for sure, medicine of the time was completely different, particularly with its understanding of mental illness. It was also just a long time ago with there being varying accounts of varying reliability and we don’t have our patient in front of us to assess. It could simply be a psychological disorder which was treated with medicines such as arsenic etc, which then caused the physical ailments and neurological issues George also struggled with. It’s truly hard to say. There are competing theories that argue he had acute porphyria, a genetic disease resulting in build up of toxins in the liver causing anxiety, depression, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, muscle weakness, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, memory loss etc, of which George suffered most, if not all of these symptoms. But again, these conclusions are from reviewing volumes of doctor’s notes retrospectively, from a time when the idea of medicine/health/physiology/psychology was insanely different, almost spiritual in nature. He has too much bad vibes in his blood, bleed him!! Like, just unbelievable. I have respect for all theories and I think it’s very beautiful that so many identify with his mental health struggles and find comfort in its portrayal. I don’t know what the answer is, I know that George suffered physically and was very ill outside of the psychological symptoms, whether this means his ailments were one thing like porphyria or a mental illness plus other physical illnesses, I do not know. It’s deeply sad either way. God, I love this show!! I feel the acting in this season is just a cut above the rest, maybe it’s just the more serious tone/subject. But the performances are phenomenal!!

2025-02-14 20:26:53 +0000 UTCSo king Geroge's illness as it is usually described, has been debated by scholars for years. In his time they thought it was psychological, with his main symptom being fits of mania, in the 20th century people thought it may have been a type of poison (not purposeful) which triggered psychological symptoms. But today it is generally agreed that he probably had bipolar disorder, with episodes starting in his 20s and continuing his entire life. It was obviously very hush hush at the time, and he was the subject of countless rumours and unkind stories pertaining to his illness. I believe the line about historical facts but being fiction partially pertains to how his illness was handled, how Charlotte dealt with it and how exactly it presented itself, but obviously also to queen Charlotte's ethnicity and the great experiment

2025-02-14 17:12:32 +0000 UTCIf you enjoy this royal tv universe, Reign is such an amazing show and it’s only 4 seasons but it gives you that glimpse into royal life and it’s set about 200 years before this timeline and about Mary queen of Scot’s. I think you would really enjoy it if you gave it a shot

2025-02-14 16:49:52 +0000 UTCI’ve been waiting for this since you started Bridgerton. While I adore the main show, this is my favorite of what we’ve gotten from this universe so far. The young Charlotte and Lady Danbury are so great at giving the essence of those characters. I think the younger Charlotte is so good at injecting some of the Charlotte we already know into this more naive and not nearly as self-assured version of the character, as you pointed out with her having some of the mannerisms that are evident in the Charlotte we know. Looking forward to your thoughts on the rest of the season.

2025-02-14 06:57:52 +0000 UTCSome no spoiler explanations for terminology used: “Dowager” is a term for a titled widow. So her wealth, land, title that she holds are all through her deceased husband. In most cases, the assets would have been passed on to the eldest son (ex: Anthony Bridgerton), so the widow typically still retains the name out of respect, but “dowager” is added to distinguish her from the current title holder. For example, Violet is the Dowager Viscountess, which is different than Kate’s Viscountess title. Kate is the current acting viscountess, but Violet is still referred to as dowager viscountess out of respect. Same for Dowager Princess Augusta (King George’s mother). She is not the Dowager Queen as George’s father was never king - George became king after his grandfather George II died as his own father had already passed. Unfortunately, since assets like wealth and land passed to the eldest son, most dowagers would have been at the mercy of their son when it came to their living arrangements. At the beginning when Lady Whistledown states that the story uses historical facts but is a work of fiction, they are basically just saying “this didn’t actually happen, it’s just for fun, but these people actually existed and some of the overall storyline actually happened”. Obviously we know the Great Experiment never happened because no people of color were ever handed out titles en masse. However, there are some debated accounts that Queen Charlotte had Moor blood, meaning she was not white, although I believe most portraits of her depict her as at least white passing. I do find the idea of the Great Experiment to be intriguing. What would England look like now if it had actually happened? It reminds me of Kendrick’s reference to “40 acres and a mule” during the half time show. What would the US look like now if the government hadn’t lied and had actually given what they had promised? Think of the potential generational wealth that could have accumulated, the societal barriers broken over time… Lastly, I also find Lord Danbury’s character to be quite maddening. Like you want to root for him, but he just makes it so hard. Especially after hearing he hated orphans and only viewed women as breeding machines. That he got to die happy (not just while actively engaging in “marital relations”, but after realizing his dream and getting to grasp the happiness that the wealthy had been dangling just out of reach) is both frustrating and kind of like “well, yes, of course, because men…”

2025-02-14 06:40:35 +0000 UTCBTW, this seems like BP1. It presents young...and (like schizophrenia, the younger the worse)... his manic presentation gives me almost ptsd from being with my sister while she dealt with the onset. It looked EXACTLY like this. I've got the milder form myself...but...it just...makes me cry.

2025-02-14 05:25:07 +0000 UTCAs a woman with bipolar disorder...who, thankfully, presented late but, horribly, watched family members fall... this "short story" means so SO much to me.
