BISTRO CALIFORNIUM: 2023-24

Three conversations with Yeerk P. from his show BISTRO CALIFORNIUM (2023- )

Ep. 21 CREATURES OF LIGHT AND DARKNESS w/ Jack (4/12/23)

"Topics: Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time (1962) + John Kent Harrison's A Wrinkle in Time (2003) + Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time (2018)

Jack joins us for a very special YA episode of Bistro Californium to discuss the very first young adult fiction novel, Madeleine L'Engle's extraordinary A WRINKLE IN TIME- an acid-soaked Christian allegory in the tradition of C. S. Lewis and David Lindsay, dramatising a spiritual battle between the forces of light (creativity, individualism, love) and darkness (the dreadful conformity of IT, the Ava DuVernay film adaptation)

Along the way they discuss early encounters with art in childhood and discover a mutual fantasy of leaving it all behind to enter the placid & relaxing world of marine biology

'It was a dark and stormy night'

'There is such a thing as a tesseract'"

Ep. 78 NATURAL BRUTALITY w/ Jack Mason (9/15/24)

"Topic: Robert Bly's Iron John: A Book About Men (1990)

The wonderful Jack Mason returns to talk about Robert Bly's classic of male consciousness-raising, IRON JOHN, the men's mythopoeic movement of the 90s, the problem of 'naive masculinity', and the importance of solitude (and moving out of your parents' house)

'The Wild Man doesn't come to life through being 'natural', going with the flow, smoking weed, reading nothing, and being generally groovy. Ecstasy amounts to living within reach of the high voltage of the golden gifts. The ecstasy comes after thought, after discipline imposed on ourselves, after grief.'
- Robert Bly"

Ep. 97 LOVE RADIATES AROUND w/ Jack Mason (12/21/24)

"Topics: Syd Straw's Surprise (1989) + War and Peace (1996) + The Roches' The Roches (1979) + Nurds (1980) + Keep On Doing (1982) + Another World (1985) + Speak (1989) + We Three Kings (1990)

It's a dream come true to welcome back Jack Mason onto the show to talk about one of my greatest and deepest musical loves, The Roches, whilst also giving some love to underrated 90s indie singer (and Pete & Pete maths teacher), Syd Straw- I previously discussed the Roches with my friend Grace all the way back on episode 3 of this show, with a focus on the first album- here, Jack and I go through the discography encountering revelation after revelation, image after glittering image- there's got to be another world....

'Down in the cellar
A memory chest
Inside of it
Mom's wedding dress
'

'When they got their picture taken they were laughing'"

Jordan Peterson is exactly as you say: straight forward common sense with a call to action; eloquently expressed. Like you, have heard intelligent female acquaintances voice negative opinions regarding him. When asked if they have ever read his books they wince in horror and exclaim they never would. A reminder to examine our received biases. Thank you for The Roches tip.

This was my way to another world

Oh my gosh! I was an intern in the education department at Saint John the Divine in 1997-1998! It’s such a glorious place. I remember being instructed to discuss the artists in residence at the time- Madeline L’Engle, Philippe Petit, (spacing on the rest lolz I was a teen.) There was a poetry wall and one of my intern duties was sorting through heaps of inmates poems to hang- the most were by Kathy Lee Gifford’s stalker! 😂 I wonder if I passed your letter into Madeline’s mailbox… By closing time I’d marvel at the rainbow light bouncing along the limestone walls of the gothic nave as the sun was setting and think this is the best! Imagine going into the “office” everyday and it’s this epic modern Cathedral?! There were horny peacocks running around the grounds chasing squirrels too…😂 Such a fun episode. 💕💕💕 And thrilled to be turned on to another great podcast via TPN.
